Yes, but only inside YouTube. When an audiobook is eligible and the Download control appears in the YouTube mobile app, you can save it for offline playback—normally with YouTube Premium. The download is encrypted, tied to your account and device, and playable only in YouTube; it is not an MP3 or other file you can copy elsewhere.
A second route exists for audiobook-style uploads published as podcast episodes in YouTube Music. Those episodes may be downloadable, sometimes without a membership, although audio-only downloads and offline availability vary by episode, show and region.
What a YouTube audiobook download actually is
YouTube’s offline feature saves an encrypted copy for playback in its own app. It does not create an audio file in your phone’s storage, and it does not give you a file that another player can open. You must remain signed in to the same YouTube account that saved the title.

The two official ways to listen offline
YouTube app: audiobook uploaded as a normal video
This is the usual path for a chaptered reading, full-length upload or playlist presented as an ordinary YouTube video. Open the title in the mobile YouTube app while signed in. If the video is eligible in your location and account, a Download button appears. Tapping it stores the encrypted video for later playback from YouTube’s offline area.
YouTube Premium is the standard way to obtain this feature, although eligibility can depend on local rules and the particular upload. A missing button means that the video, account or region is not eligible; it does not indicate a problem with your phone’s storage.
YouTube Music: audiobook-style episode published as a podcast
Some publishers place audiobook-style material in YouTube Music as podcast episodes. In that case, open the episode’s menu and choose Download. YouTube Music says podcast downloads can be available without a membership, but that exception applies to eligible podcast content, not to every video or every show.

Audio-only availability is not guaranteed. An episode may offer an in-app download while lacking an audio-only option, and availability can differ by country. YouTube Music Premium is required for the broader music-download feature set, but podcast eligibility is handled separately.

Step-by-step: download an audiobook from the YouTube app
- Sign in. Open the YouTube mobile app and sign in to the account that has YouTube Premium if Premium is required where you live.
- Open the audiobook video. Navigate to the specific upload or chapter you want to hear offline. A playlist does not automatically make every item downloadable.
- Check for Download. Tap Download beneath the video, or use the video’s more-options menu if that is where the control appears in your app version. If no Download control is shown, the title is not eligible for offline playback for that account or location.
- Wait for completion. Keep the app open until the download finishes. The saved item remains encrypted on the device.
- Play it later. While signed in to the same account, open the You tab or Downloads area and select the audiobook. Playback stays inside YouTube, even when the phone has no connection.
Step-by-step: download a podcast-format audiobook in YouTube Music
- Open YouTube Music. Find the audiobook material under podcasts rather than treating it as a standard music track.
- Open the episode menu. Select the three-dot or more-options menu for the exact episode.
- Choose Download. If the option is present, start the download and wait for it to complete. YouTube Music may present a podcast download even when no audio-only download is offered.
- Confirm offline access. Turn off the connection or use the app’s downloaded-content area to verify that the episode starts before travelling.
If the menu has no Download command, that episode or show is not currently eligible. Changing from Wi-Fi to mobile data will not create an option that the publisher, rights holder or region has disabled.
Do you need YouTube Premium?
For ordinary audiobook videos, Premium is the dependable route to the YouTube app’s offline feature, but the control is still title- and region-dependent. A Premium subscription cannot override a rights restriction or an upload that YouTube has excluded from downloads.
Podcast episodes in YouTube Music are different. YouTube Music states that podcast downloads may be available without membership. Premium is needed for the wider music-download functionality, so do not assume that a podcast download policy applies to music videos or standard audiobook uploads.
Before subscribing solely for one title, open that title on the account and check whether Download is actually displayed. This check distinguishes a subscription limitation from a rights or regional limitation.

Offline periods, reconnection and regional limits
YouTube Music’s 30-day check
YouTube Music requires an internet reconnection at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. The check confirms that the account and content are still authorized. Reconnect before a trip, then open the downloaded episode while online so the app can refresh its status.
Shorter periods in some YouTube regions
YouTube’s regional rules are not uniform. In selected locations, certain mobile downloads can play offline for up to 48 hours before a connection is required. Some non-music content can remain available for up to 29 days. These are maximum windows described by YouTube for particular regions and content categories, not a universal promise for every audiobook.
A download can therefore work on the flight out and stop working on the return journey if the relevant reconnection deadline passes. Plan for the strictest rule that applies to your location and title rather than relying on the 30-day YouTube Music period.
Device and account limits
YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium offline features support up to 10 devices at once. You can swap devices, but YouTube limits this to four device swaps in a year. After the fourth swap, you cannot add another device until the annual limit resets.

This matters when replacing a phone, repeatedly reinstalling the app or downloading on family devices. Keep downloads on the devices you actually use for travel, and sign in before starting a long audiobook so the entitlement is attached to the correct account.

- The upload is ineligible. The creator or rights holder may have disabled offline use, or YouTube may not permit downloads for that content type.
- Your region has different rules. Download availability and offline duration can vary by country.
- You are using the wrong account. Sign out and back in to the account with the relevant Premium membership, then reopen the title.
- The item is a podcast in the wrong app. Check YouTube Music if the material is listed as a podcast episode; the standard YouTube video page may not expose the same control.
- The app needs to refresh. Connect to the internet, update the YouTube or YouTube Music app through your device’s normal app store, and check the title again. Updating cannot make an ineligible upload downloadable, but it can resolve a stale account state.
- The content changed rights status. A title that was previously saved can disappear if the creator changes its availability or the rights holder withdraws it.
Can you move the audiobook to an MP3 player or another app?
No. YouTube’s app download is encrypted and restricted to playback in YouTube. It is not exposed as an MP3, M4A or transferable video file, so it cannot be copied to a conventional MP3 player, USB drive, media server or another phone’s music library.
Screen-recording or extraction tools do not change YouTube’s official download model and may conflict with copyright, the uploader’s permissions or YouTube’s terms. If you need a portable file that works outside YouTube, obtain it from a service that expressly sells or licenses downloadable audiobook files.

How to prepare for a flight or other offline trip
- Test eligibility at home. Find the exact audiobook and verify that Download appears before you rely on it.
- Save every required chapter. If the reading is split into separate videos or episodes, download each item; downloading one part does not guarantee that the rest is available.
- Finish on Wi-Fi. Allow the download to complete and check the downloaded-content list.
- Test without a connection. Enable airplane mode briefly and start the title. This reveals account or app problems while you still have internet access.
- Reconnect before the deadline. YouTube Music requires at least one connection every 30 days, while some regional YouTube rules allow only 48 hours or, for certain non-music content, up to 29 days.
- Carry the same device and account. The saved copy will not follow you as a standalone file, and changing devices counts toward the annual swap allowance.
What happens if the audiobook is removed?
Offline status is conditional on the title remaining available. If a creator changes the upload, a rights holder withdraws permission or YouTube removes the content, the audiobook may be removed from your downloads or stop playing after the next authorization check. An offline copy is therefore convenience access, not a permanent archive.

- Choose the YouTube app route when the audiobook is an ordinary video and you are satisfied listening inside YouTube with the applicable Premium access.
- Choose YouTube Music when the publisher has released the material as a podcast episode and the episode’s menu offers Download, especially if you do not have a membership.
- Use another licensed audiobook source when you need an MP3 or a file that remains playable after leaving YouTube, survives account changes or can be transferred to a dedicated player.
