Yes—but “dying during a cutscene” can mean several different things. In some reported cases, enemies or hazards keep acting while the player cannot respond; in others, the event happens during a brief in-engine interaction, at the edge of a scene, or only after a glitch. Examples include Halo: Combat Evolved, Guild Wars, Mad Max (2015), Red Dead Redemption 2, Siren, and glitch-dependent cases in DmC: Devil May Cry. The evidence varies, so these should not all be treated as routine, reliably repeatable features.

What counts as dying during a cutscene?

A cinematic camera does not necessarily mean the game simulation has stopped. An in-engine scene may leave enemies or environmental hazards active even when player input is suspended. Other apparent examples involve a short contextual action rather than a conventional cutscene, a death just before a scene begins, or a glitch that lets the character move when the scene would normally restrict them.

The distinction matters: a player report is not proof that an event happens consistently, and a death involving a companion or controlled unit is not the same as the protagonist dying. The examples below are qualified accordingly.

Games with reported deaths during or around scenes

Halo: Combat Evolved

Players have reported a Banshee following the Master Chief into a scene and killing him, as well as occasional Flood attacks during scenes. These are anecdotal reports, not established reproduction steps or a guarantee that the events occur in ordinary play.

Guild Wars

One player report describes undead minions left alive at the end of the opening mission attacking the player during the final scene. According to that account, the mission can still register as a success even though the player’s no-death title record is lost. This behavior is reported by a player rather than confirmed here as official, reproducible game behavior.

Mad Max (2015)

Players describe being vulnerable during brief in-engine interactions, including giving water or refueling. Input may be suspended while enemies can still attack. These moments are better described as “mini-cutscenes” or contextual interactions than as long, conventional cinematic scenes.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Players have mentioned a cougar attacking during a house-building montage. The report does not establish the precise conditions that trigger it, so it is an anecdotal example rather than a predictable mechanic.

Siren

A gameplay guide describes a game-over edge case in the sightjacking screen if a sidekick dies at the relevant moment. It also notes that a player can die just before a cutscene starts, with a delay before the mission-failed display appears. These are timing cases around a scene, not necessarily the protagonist dying midway through a conventional cutscene.

DmC: Devil May Cry

A glitch FAQ documents ways for Dante to remain mobile during certain cutscenes. If he moves into a chasm, he can die while the scene continues. The behavior depends on the scene and glitch setup; it should not be mistaken for normal, expected vulnerability during cutscenes.

Pikmin 2

A community-maintained glitch reference describes Pikmin being exposed to hazards as a cutscene triggers, with some dying before the game pauses for the scene. The casualties in this case are the player’s Pikmin—not the player character.

Saints Row

A 2023 update report quotes a fix for an issue that allowed damage and death during a saloon cinematic. That makes this an example of a reported software bug, not a current feature readers should expect to reproduce. Whether it applies depends on the relevant game build and platform.

Dune: Awakening

A player discussion on Steam from July 2025 describes a cinematic starting while the player was driving through hazardous terrain, followed by the player’s death before the scene ended. Replies speculate that movement, exposure, or nearby enemies may have contributed, but this remains a player account rather than developer-confirmed behavior.

How to interpret these examples

  • Scene type: An in-engine cinematic, a short contextual interaction, and a prerecorded video do not necessarily handle gameplay the same way.
  • Who dies: Some reports concern the protagonist, while Pikmin 2 concerns controlled units and the cited Siren case involves a sidekick’s death triggering game over.
  • Cause: The reported causes include active enemies or hazards, a timing edge case, and a movement glitch.
  • Evidence and version: Several examples are player anecdotes; others come from guides, a glitch reference, or a patch report. A fix or a particular game build can change whether an event is possible.

There is no established prevalence figure for how often these deaths happen. The examples show that scenes do not always guarantee safety, but they do not establish that every listed event is common or repeatable.
