For most backyard radio telescopes, no—not as a realistic or reliable project. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) last milliseconds, and the surveys that find them use purpose-built instruments with broad frequency coverage, fast data capture, substantial collecting area, and dedicated processing. Small dishes have observed one exceptionally active known repeater, but that is a special targeted case, not evidence that ordinary amateur equipment can discover FRBs.

Why FRBs are difficult to catch

The signal is brief

An FRB can be over in milliseconds. CHIME’s FRB backend records at approximately 1 millisecond time resolution, which helps capture these short events. A receiver that averages data over longer intervals can blur a burst or miss its peak.

The receiver must cover useful frequencies

FRB searches need suitable frequency coverage as well as fast sampling. CHIME observes from 400–800 MHz, while the Deep Synoptic Array-110 (DSA-110) operates at 1280–1530 MHz. These are examples of different survey systems, not a single required FRB band. A CHIME/FRB Collaboration paper reported observations of 13 FRBs down to 400 MHz, illustrating that bursts can be studied across a range of frequencies.

Collecting area and processing matter

Survey instruments are designed to collect faint signals and analyze large streams of data quickly. CHIME has four semi-cylindrical reflectors, each with a collecting area of 2,000 m², and a dedicated FRB backend. DSA-110 is a 110-dish array built for FRB detection and localization. Its project page lists a search sensitivity of less than 1.7 Jy ms at 7.5 sigma and 1 ms; that figure describes the DSA-110 search, not a threshold an amateur setup can assume.

There is no supported minimum dish size that guarantees a backyard detection. A fair comparison would also need to account for field of view, receiver noise, frequency coverage, time resolution, processing, and local interference—not dish diameter alone.

What the small-dish exception does—and does not—show

An NRAO public proposal describes small European dishes observing the unusually active repeating FRB 20240114A at high cadence. The proposal reports emission from that source up to 1.7 GHz. This is a targeted observation of a known, hyperactive repeater; it does not establish that ordinary backyard telescopes can survey the sky for unknown FRBs or detect bursts reliably. Nor is 1.7 GHz a general upper frequency limit for FRBs.

What you can observe from a backyard instead

Amateur radio astronomy can still be rewarding when matched to signals and equipment intended for it. NASA’s Radio JOVE project describes observations of the Sun, Jupiter, lightning, and the galactic radio background using 16–24 MHz spectrographs. That frequency range and equipment are for those targets, not FRB detection.

Radio interference is another practical obstacle. Human-made transmissions can overwhelm faint astronomical signals; the National Science Foundation notes that Green Bank Observatory’s radio-quiet location helps protect observations from this interference. A backyard’s local radio environment can therefore limit what is detectable, even when the observing equipment is appropriate.

How to decide whether an FRB setup is realistic

  • For an ordinary home setup: Treat FRB detection as unrealistic. A generic dish or software-defined radio receiver is not, by itself, an FRB survey instrument.
  • For a specialized observing effort: The small-dish example shows that targeted work on a known, unusually active repeater can be possible under exceptional conditions. It is not a general recipe or a promised detection.
  • For a practical first project: Choose a documented amateur activity such as Radio JOVE, and use equipment suited to its specified targets and frequency range.
