Can the Instagram API delete a published post? The available documentation does not establish a reliable yes-or-no answer for every account and API setup. Meta’s documentation describes publishing and media access but does not confirm deletion in the material reviewed, while a third-party plugin says its Graph API integration cannot delete published media. A search-result mirror claims a permission called instagram_manage_contents can delete media, but that claim could not be verified on an official Meta page. Before planning a product retirement around API deletion, confirm support for your account type, login flow, permission set, and API version.
Does the Instagram API delete published posts?
It is not safe to treat deletion as either universally supported or universally unavailable. Meta’s Instagram API documentation collection describes features for professional accounts, including publishing media and accessing media-related functions, but the reviewed documentation does not answer whether an already-published post can be deleted. A third-party Payload plugin’s Instagram documentation says its Graph API integration cannot delete published Instagram Business media. By contrast, a non-Meta search-result mirror of a permissions reference claims that instagram_manage_contents can delete posts, stories, or reels; that claim has not been confirmed on an official Meta page.
Those sources describe different levels of certainty: Meta’s reviewed collection is inconclusive on deletion, the plugin describes its own integration, and the mirror is unverified. Neither publishing access nor permission to read media proves that an app can delete media already published to Instagram.

Check the exact setup you intend to use rather than assuming a permission or endpoint applies to every integration. Meta’s documentation covers both Facebook Login and Instagram Login material, but the evidence here does not tie deletion support conclusively to either flow.

- Login flow: Establish whether the integration uses Facebook Login or Instagram Login and whether the claimed deletion capability applies to that flow.
- Permission and app review: Confirm the permission required for deletion in current official Meta documentation, and whether your app must undergo review or provide a use-case explanation. The unverified mirror’s claim about
instagram_manage_contentsis not sufficient confirmation. - API version and media type: Verify the current version and whether support differs for posts, stories, or reels. The reviewed sources do not establish these details.
- Actual outcome: Test with a controlled post and check both Instagram and the calling integration. Do not infer success from a successful API response unless the media is confirmed removed.
What to do when API deletion is unavailable
The plugin documentation recommends removing the media in Instagram itself when its integration cannot delete it through the Graph API. Its guidance is specific to that plugin and is not confirmation of the current app workflow for every account. Use Instagram’s current interface to locate and remove the post, and verify afterward that it is no longer visible as expected.
If the post concerns a discontinued product, removal is only one possible response: depending on the business need, you may instead update the caption, direct customers to a replacement, or archive the post if that option is available in your account. Choose based on whether the old information is misleading, whether the post still serves customers, and what controls Instagram currently provides.

Why a third-party publishing tool may still show a removed post
Deleting media in Instagram does not necessarily update another service’s local record. The Payload plugin documentation warns that a post removed externally may remain in its system as a row marked published. That is a description of the plugin’s local-state behavior, not a universal rule for all publishing tools.

After removing a post outside a connected tool, check that tool’s documentation or support guidance for reconciliation, refresh, or record-removal options. Confirm which action changes only the tool’s local record and which action affects the Instagram post itself; do not assume deleting a local record also removes media from Instagram.

The practical decision is conditional: use an API only after confirming its current deletion capability for your exact setup. If it is not available, remove the media through Instagram’s current controls and separately check any connected tool’s record.
