Yes. You can control Apple Home accessories in the Home app while away, provided your home has a configured home hub and your iPhone and hub meet Apple’s account and iCloud requirements.
What you need for remote control
- A home hub at home: Apple’s current setup guidance describes HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV as hub options. The hub must be powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi. Apple’s home-hub setup guide explains how to configure each device.
- Home enabled in iCloud: On iPhone, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > See All > Home and turn it on.
- The same Apple Account: Sign in to the iPhone and home hub with the same Apple Account. Apple says Apple TV 4K or HomePod may be set up automatically as a hub when signed in to that account. See Apple’s iPhone guide to remote home control.
The hub stays at home; your iPhone connects to it through Apple Home when you are away. You do not need to leave your iPhone at home.

Set up a home hub
HomePod mini or HomePod
Set up the HomePod in your home using the same Apple Account as your iPhone. Apple says HomePod mini and HomePod become home hubs when set up.

Add the Apple TV to a room in the Home app and keep it powered on and connected to the home network. Apple’s setup instructions cover the current hub setup and network requirements: Set up your home hub.

Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV among its hub options, but availability varies by country or region. Check the specific device’s availability where you live before planning a setup.
Can an iPad be your Apple Home hub?
Do not rely on an iPad for a new or current Apple Home setup. Apple’s Home User Guide still describes an iPad running iPadOS 13 or later left at home, but says iPad is not supported as a hub on the new Home architecture. For current remote access, use an Apple TV or HomePod-family hub. See Apple’s Home User Guide.

Why remote control might not work
If accessories work at home but not when you are away, check these items in order:

- Check that the hub is connected to your home Wi-Fi.
- On iPhone, confirm that Home is enabled under Settings > your name > iCloud > See All > Home.
- Confirm that the iPhone and hub use the same Apple Account.
- Update and restart the hub, then check that iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication are enabled for the Apple Account, as Apple recommends in its home-hub troubleshooting guidance.
Matter and Thread accessories have extra requirements
A Matter or Thread label alone does not guarantee that an accessory will work remotely in your particular Apple Home setup. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories. Thread-enabled Matter accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub; Apple gives HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples. Some Thread combinations also require a compatible Thread border router. Check the exact accessory, hub, and network combination before buying or troubleshooting it.

Compatibility can also depend on what you want the accessory to do. Apple’s developer guidance distinguishes basic pairing or local control from features such as automations, notifications, and remote access. Consult Apple’s HomeKit compatibility guidance and the accessory’s specifications for the intended functions.

Apple distinguishes residents from Home Guests. Residents can have local access and, when remote access is enabled, control the home away from it. Guests are described as having local-only access to selected doors, locks, and security-system accessories on a schedule. A home hub is required for remote access and guest access.
