Yes. Connect the turntable, TV, and phone to a receiver, integrated amplifier, or powered speaker system, then use that system’s source selector to send the chosen source to the same speakers. The critical compatibility check is the turntable’s phono stage: either the turntable or the receiving equipment must provide one. For the TV, HDMI ARC/eARC is usually the most convenient digital connection when both devices support it. A phone can generally connect by Bluetooth, with wired or network playback available on some systems.
How one music system handles three sources
A shared setup has three jobs: accept each source’s signal, select which source is active, and drive the speakers. A receiver or integrated amplifier performs all three when paired with passive speakers. It provides multiple inputs, lets you select turntable, TV, or phone playback, and contains the power amplifier that passive speakers require.
Powered speakers contain their own amplifiers. They can work without a separate receiver if their built-in inputs match your sources. Some powered systems accept a turntable, TV audio, and Bluetooth directly; others require an external phono preamp, a digital-to-analog converter, or another adapter. Read the manuals and inspect the rear-panel labels for the exact model before buying cables or converters.
An ordinary receiver or amplifier normally plays one selected source at a time. You select the turntable for records, the TV input for television audio, or Bluetooth/network playback for the phone. Playing two sources simultaneously requires specialized mixing or multiroom equipment and is not a normal source-selector function.

Connect the turntable correctly
Turntables do not all output the same kind of signal. A cartridge produces a low-level phono signal that must be equalized and amplified to the line level expected by inputs such as AUX, CD, or LINE. Sony’s support guidance states: “To connect a turntable to a stereo system, the stereo system should have a PHONO input.” If a PHONO input is absent, the turntable needs a built-in phono preamp or an external one.
Option 1: Turntable with a PHONO output and receiver PHONO input
- Connect the turntable’s left and right RCA plugs to the receiver’s PHONO input.
- If the turntable has a ground wire and the receiver has a GND or ground terminal, attach the wire to that terminal.
- Set the turntable’s output switch to PHONO, or switch its EQ/preamp off, depending on the labels used by that model.
- Select PHONO on the receiver and start playback.
This arrangement uses the receiver’s phono stage. The ground connection is intended to reduce hum; not every turntable uses a separate wire, so follow the device manual.
Option 2: Turntable with a built-in preamp and a line input
- Connect the turntable to an AUX, LINE, or another available line-level input.
- Set the turntable’s output to LINE, or turn its built-in EQ/preamp on.
- Select the same line input on the receiver or powered speakers.
A built-in preamp lets a turntable feed a normal line input. The switch names vary, so confirm whether the model labels the choices PHONO/LINE, EQ ON/OFF, or something similar.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Option 3: Turntable without a preamp and no PHONO input
- Connect the turntable’s RCA leads to the input side of an external phono preamp.
- Connect the preamp’s output to an AUX, LINE, or other line-level input on the receiver or powered speakers.
- Connect the turntable ground wire to the preamp’s ground terminal when both provide one.
- Use the receiver’s selected line input for listening.
An external phono preamp is therefore conditional, not automatic. You need one only when the turntable lacks a built-in preamp and the receiving system lacks a PHONO input.
Avoid two phono stages in series
Do not connect a turntable whose output is already set to LINE to a receiver’s PHONO input. That applies phono equalization twice and can cause excessive level or distorted sound. Conversely, a raw PHONO output connected to AUX or LINE will usually be too quiet and tonally incorrect. Use exactly one phono stage: in the turntable, in the receiver, or in an external preamp.
Connect the TV using the output your equipment supports
When the TV and receiver or speaker system both have HDMI ARC or eARC, connect the TV’s port labeled ARC/eARC to the system’s corresponding ARC/eARC port. Select that HDMI input on the receiver or system. ARC/eARC can carry the TV’s audio over the same HDMI connection used for compatible television equipment, but both ends must support the feature and the ports must be the correct ones.

HDMI ARC/eARC setup
- Locate the HDMI port on the TV labeled ARC or eARC; a regular HDMI input may not provide audio return.
- Locate the matching HDMI ARC/eARC port on the receiver or speaker system.
- Connect the two ports with an HDMI cable.
- On the TV, open Settings, then Sound or Audio, and choose the HDMI ARC/eARC output. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- On the receiver or system, select the TV/ARC input.
- If the system’s instructions require it, set the TV’s digital audio format to PCM. Technics, for example, specifies PCM for an HDMI ARC connection on its SC-CX700 system.
If there is no sound, check that the cable is in the ARC/eARC-labeled sockets on both devices and that the TV is not still set to its internal speakers.
Optical or analog alternatives
If ARC/eARC is unavailable, inspect the TV for an optical digital output or an analog audio output and match it to an input on the receiver or powered speakers. An optical output must connect to an optical input; a TV’s headphone or RCA line output must connect to a compatible analog input. The receiver or speaker system may require you to select that input manually.
TVs can expose audio-format choices such as PCM, Dolby Digital, or pass-through. The correct setting depends on what the receiving equipment decodes. If a system’s manual calls for PCM, use PCM rather than assuming every format is supported.

Connect the phone
Bluetooth playback
- Put the receiver or powered speaker system into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the phone, open Settings, then Bluetooth, and enable Bluetooth.
- Choose the system’s name from the available-device list and confirm pairing if prompted.
- Start playback in the phone’s music or video app and select the system as the audio destination if the phone asks.
Bluetooth is convenient, but its availability is model-specific. Do not assume that every receiver or powered speaker supports Bluetooth playback merely because it accepts other wireless features.
Network or app-based playback
Some systems provide network streaming through a manufacturer app or a supported music service. In that case, connect the system to the same network or follow its setup process, then choose the system inside the app. The exact services and phone platforms vary by model, so verify them in the manual before choosing this connection as your main method.

Wired phone connection
A wired connection is possible only when the phone and system have compatible ports. Depending on the devices, this may require a phone adapter and a line input such as AUX. Check whether the phone’s port carries audio and whether the receiving input expects analog or digital audio; a cable that fits physically is not proof that the signal format is compatible.

What to compare before buying or reusing equipment
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Turntable input | PHONO input, or a line input plus a turntable preamp or external phono preamp | The cartridge signal needs one phono stage before it reaches a normal line input. |
| TV input | HDMI ARC/eARC on both devices, or a matching optical or analog connection | The TV’s output must match an input that the receiver or speakers can decode. |
| Phone input | Bluetooth playback, supported network/app streaming, or a compatible wired input | Wireless and wired capabilities differ by model. |
| Speaker arrangement | Amplification for passive speakers, or compatible inputs on powered speakers | Passive speakers cannot run directly from source devices; they need an amplifier. |
| Extra hardware | Possible HDMI cable, optical cable, phone adapter, or external phono preamp | Adapters should be chosen only after the actual ports and signal types are known. |
A receiver is generally the flexible choice when you want several physical inputs and passive speakers. A powered speaker system can reduce the number of separate boxes when it already includes the required phono, TV, and phone connections. Neither category is automatically better; the deciding factor is whether the exact model has every input you need and the correct amplification for your speakers.
A complete connection plan
- List the equipment. Write down the turntable model, TV model, phone type, receiver or speaker system, and speaker type.
- Identify the turntable output. Check for a PHONO/LINE or EQ switch and note whether the turntable has a ground wire.
- Identify the system’s inputs. Look for PHONO, AUX/LINE, HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, analog, and Bluetooth labels.
- Choose the phono path. Use PHONO-to-PHONO, LINE-to-line input, or an external phono preamp when neither existing device supplies the needed stage.
- Choose the TV path. Prefer ARC/eARC when both devices support it; otherwise use a matching optical or analog connection.
- Choose the phone path. Pair by Bluetooth, configure supported network playback, or use a compatible wired adapter.
- Connect speakers. If they are passive, connect them to the receiver or amplifier’s speaker terminals with the polarity shown on the terminals. If they are powered, connect their power and source cables as specified by the manufacturer.
- Power up and test one source at a time. Start with the receiver or speakers at a low volume, test the turntable, then TV, then phone, changing inputs deliberately.
- Label the inputs. If the system allows custom names, label them Record, TV, and Phone so other listeners can select the correct source.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The turntable is silent or extremely quiet
- Confirm that a raw PHONO output is not connected to AUX or LINE without a preamp.
- Confirm that a LINE output is not connected to PHONO.
- Check that the receiver is set to the input used by the turntable.
- Verify the RCA plugs are fully inserted and the left/right channels are connected correctly.
The turntable hums
- Connect the turntable’s ground wire to the receiver or external preamp ground terminal when provided.
- Make sure only the intended phono stage is active.
- Keep signal cables firmly connected and away from obvious power-cable interference.
The TV picture works but there is no sound
- Check that the HDMI cable is connected to ARC/eARC ports, not ordinary HDMI ports.
- Set the TV’s audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC or the selected optical/analog output instead of internal speakers.
- Try PCM if the receiving system does not decode the TV’s current digital format.
- Select the corresponding ARC, optical, or analog input on the receiver or speakers.
The phone pairs but playback comes from the phone
- Verify that the receiver or speaker system is selected as the phone’s active Bluetooth audio output.
- Stop playback on another paired device that may have reclaimed the connection.
- Disconnect and pair again if the system appears in Bluetooth settings but does not accept audio.
One source is much louder than another
Different source devices can produce different output levels. Use the receiver’s input-level or volume controls if the model provides them, and adjust the phone or TV volume only within the range recommended by its manual. Avoid correcting a phono-stage mismatch with volume alone; that indicates the wrong signal path.
Buying guidance and limits of model names
A practical search phrase is “AV receiver with phono input and HDMI ARC.” Treat it as a starting point, not a specification guarantee. Before buying, open the exact model’s manual and confirm all of the following:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The turntable can connect directly, or the model has a suitable line input for a turntable with a preamp.
- The TV connection matches the TV’s available ARC/eARC, optical, or analog output.
- Bluetooth playback or another preferred phone method is explicitly supported.
- The amplifier can power your passive speakers, or the model is intended for powered speakers.
- The required cables, adapters, and any phono preamp are included or budgeted separately.
Manufacturer examples show that multi-source receivers and integrated systems can support turntable, TV, and phone playback, but a manual for one model does not establish that every receiver or speaker system has the same ports. Compatibility remains model-specific, especially for HDMI audio formats, Bluetooth behavior, and phono-stage switches.
