Usually, no. After a parcel is dispatched, the recipient normally cannot transfer it from the original courier to a competing carrier. The shipment is already moving through that carrier’s network under its shipping label. What you can often change is the delivery arrangement: the address, date, pickup location, hold status, delivery instructions, or return-to-sender request.
The exact choices depend on the carrier, shipment status, destination, package contents, sender restrictions and possible fees. Act while the parcel is still in transit; an “out for delivery” scan can remove many options.
Changing the courier is different from changing the delivery
When people ask whether they can change a courier after dispatch, they may mean one of two different things:
- Courier substitution: moving the parcel from the original carrier to a competing carrier, such as replacing UPS with DHL.
- Delivery change: asking the original carrier to deliver on a different date, to another eligible address, to a pickup point, or after a temporary hold.
Carrier policies reviewed for UPS, FedEx and DHL Express document the second category, not the first. Once a label has been created and the package has entered the original carrier’s network, the carrier controls scanning, sorting, transport and final delivery. A reroute changes where or when that carrier delivers; it does not create a new shipment with another company.

Even if you already have a tracking number, the tracking number remains tied to the original carrier. You cannot normally hand the parcel to a competing courier yourself without first receiving it, returning it under a new label, and arranging a separate shipment.
Why a competing-courier switch normally cannot happen
The original shipping label identifies the carrier, service level, destination and handling instructions. Sorting equipment and depot staff use that information throughout the journey. FedEx explicitly warns that rerouting is not guaranteed because it cannot physically change the original shipping label attached to the shipment.
A second carrier would also need to accept custody, verify the destination, apply a new label, collect payment and assume responsibility for the package. The carrier currently holding the parcel is not generally authorized to replace that contract with a competitor’s service after dispatch. Sender agreements, customs data, dangerous-goods rules and package restrictions can further limit changes.

The practical solution is to use the original carrier’s delivery-management tools or ask the seller or shipper to request an intercept.
What you can usually change instead
Reroute to another eligible address
A carrier may redirect the parcel to another address in the same country, subject to identity checks, sender permission, service restrictions and a fee. A changed address is not the same as a new courier; the original carrier still completes delivery.
Change the delivery date
If you will be away, the carrier may let you postpone delivery to a future date. The available dates and cutoff depend on the route and operational status. A request made after the vehicle has been loaded may be rejected.

Hold the parcel for pickup
Many carriers can hold a shipment at a staffed location, retail counter, service point or locker. You normally need identification and the tracking details, and some shipments are ineligible because of size, contents or sender instructions.

Use delivery instructions or a vacation hold
Where the service supports it, you can provide instructions for the delivery attempt or place the shipment on a temporary hold. These controls may be limited for signature-required, age-restricted or otherwise controlled shipments.
Return the shipment to the sender
A return-to-sender request stops the current delivery and sends the parcel back through the original carrier’s network. It does not forward the parcel to a competitor. The seller can then decide whether to issue a new label and ship again.

UPS: recipient changes and shipper intercepts
For the person receiving the parcel
UPS says recipients can use UPS My Choice or a one-time guest flow to request a delivery change. Depending on the shipment, the tracking page may show an option to reroute the parcel to another location or change the delivery date.
Open the shipment’s UPS tracking or delivery-management page and look for Delivery Options. If that control is missing, UPS says the shipper may have restricted changes or the package contents may be ineligible. A missing button does not mean the tracking number is invalid; it means the shipment is not offering that self-service action.

For the sender
If you sent the package, UPS Delivery Intercept must be requested before delivery. Eligible outcomes can include returning the parcel to the sender, redirecting it to another address, rescheduling it for a future date, or holding it for pickup. UPS may charge a fee when the request is completed, so confirm the amount and the resulting delivery estimate before submitting it.

FedEx: address changes are conditional and not guaranteed
FedEx can honor an address-change request only when the sender has not restricted changes, the new address is not in another country, and the shipment has not already been delivered. Other service and package restrictions can apply, and fees may be added.
FedEx’s own warning is important: “Please note that rerouting is not a guaranteed service, as we are unable to physically change the original shipping label attached to the shipment.” A successful request therefore means FedEx will attempt to handle the parcel under its existing label; it is not a promise that the new destination will be reached.
FedEx Delivery Manager and tracking tools may offer return to sender, address correction, rerouting to a retail location, delivery instructions or a vacation hold. The options shown for one package may differ from another because the sender, service type, contents and destination determine eligibility.
DHL Express: date changes and collection points
DHL Express On Demand Delivery lists delivery-date changes and collection from a nearby DHL Express Service Point or Locker. These features let you control timing or collection while DHL remains the carrier.
The cited DHL service information does not provide a mechanism for replacing DHL with another courier after dispatch. It also does not establish one universal cutoff time or standard fee for every destination. Check the options displayed for your shipment rather than assuming that a date change or locker collection is available on every route.
How to request the best available change
- Identify the carrier. Read the tracking email, order page or tracking-number format, then open the carrier’s official tracking or delivery-management page.
- Enter the tracking details. Use the tracking number and any postal code, account login or identity check requested by the carrier.
- Look for the carrier’s change controls. Labels may include Change My Delivery, Manage Delivery, reroute, hold, pickup, address correction or delivery-date change.
- Choose the least disruptive outcome. A nearby pickup point or a later date is often simpler than an address change, which can require additional verification and may be blocked by sender rules.
- Review the conditions before confirming. Check any fee, new delivery estimate, identification requirement, pickup deadline and service limitation.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the request number or updated tracking event so you can prove what was requested if the status does not change immediately.
- Contact the seller or shipper if no option appears. Ask the sender to submit an intercept or contact the carrier’s business support channel. A sender restriction can prevent the recipient from changing the delivery.
Timing: why the tracking status matters
Label created or shipment information received
At this stage, the carrier may not yet have physical possession. The seller may still be able to cancel the label, correct the order or create a replacement shipment. Ask the seller immediately if the wrong courier or address was selected.

In transit or moving through a facility
This is generally the most useful window for a delivery change. Self-service options may still be available, and a shipper intercept has time to reach the package before the final delivery route is planned.

Pickup-point or hold requests may remain possible, but the cutoff can be close. Submit the request before the package is assigned to a driver.
Out for delivery
Options usually narrow once the parcel is on a delivery vehicle. Ask the carrier whether a hold, missed-delivery workflow or return-to-sender process remains available; do not assume a reroute can still be completed.
Delivered
Normal delivery-management changes are over. If the parcel went to the wrong address, contact the seller and carrier promptly and follow the carrier’s claims or recovery process.

“I want DHL instead of UPS.”
You normally cannot transfer the parcel between those carriers after dispatch. Request a UPS hold, date change or eligible reroute. If the order must travel with DHL, ask the seller whether the UPS shipment can be returned and a new DHL shipment created; that is a new transaction, not a mid-route courier change.
“The shipping address is wrong.”
Open the original carrier’s delivery-management page first. If an address change is offered, verify the new address, country restriction and fee. If it is unavailable, contact the seller or shipper for an intercept before delivery.

“I will not be home.”
Choose a delivery-date change, hold, pickup point or locker when the carrier presents one. A pickup request can avoid a failed attempt, but bring the required identification and collect within the stated holding period.
“The seller selected an unsuitable service.”
Ask the seller to intervene. The sender may have access to intercept controls that are not visible to the recipient, and sender restrictions can block recipient changes entirely.
“The tracking page shows no options.”
Possible causes include sender restrictions, ineligible contents, the shipment being too late in its route, a destination limitation or a service that does not support recipient changes. Contact the seller or carrier rather than repeatedly refreshing the page.

A delivery change can create a charge even when the original shipping fee has already been paid. UPS states that fees may apply to a completed Delivery Intercept. FedEx notes that additional restrictions and fees may apply to address changes or rerouting. The available carrier information does not establish one universal price, so review the amount shown for your specific shipment.
Carriers may require an account, a one-time guest verification, a postal code, government-issued identification at pickup or confirmation that you are authorized to change the delivery. A request can be accepted for review without being guaranteed; FedEx expressly says rerouting is not guaranteed.
Do not pay a third party that claims it can “convert” the tracking number to another carrier. Use the carrier’s own tracking and delivery-management channels, and verify any payment request against the order or tracking record.
When the parcel must truly travel with another courier
If a particular carrier is required for a deadline, insurance rule or destination restriction, the reliable route is to stop or complete the original shipment and create a new one. Contact the seller before delivery and ask whether they can request a return-to-sender or intercept. After the parcel is returned, the seller can issue a new label with the desired carrier, subject to its own shipping policy and any extra cost.

Do not tell the original carrier to place the parcel in a competitor’s network without a new label and documented acceptance. That can break tracking, liability and delivery instructions, and the original carrier may refuse the handoff.
