Orion Backgammon says you can verify the dice in a completed server game: it commits to a secret seed before play, reveals that seed afterward, and lets you recompute the rolls. That can help show the rolls were not changed after the commitment. It does not prove that every part of the game or service is fair.
How Orion’s dice check works
Orion describes the process as a commitment-and-reveal check. The commitment is a published hash of a secret seed: it lets the server show later that it used the same seed it committed to before the game, without disclosing the seed during play.
Before the first roll: Orion publishes a commitment
Orion says its server generates a secret seed before a server game and publishes the seed’s SHA-256 hash. The hash is intended to bind the server to that seed before any rolls occur. Orion’s official page describes the feature as a response to the question players ask: “is this app rigged?”

According to Orion’s explanation, each roll is derived using HMAC-SHA256 and the roll’s position in the game. Orion says the game state, score, doubling cube, and player are not inputs to that calculation. This describes how the app says it generates rolls; it is not an independent confirmation of the running service.

After the game: the seed is revealed and rolls can be checked
When the game ends, Orion reveals the seed. A player can compare its SHA-256 hash with the earlier commitment and recompute the rolls. Orion’s official verifier accepts a game ID and performs the check in the player’s browser; its verification page explains the process.
What a successful check does—and does not—show
If the revealed seed matches the commitment and the recomputed rolls match the game, that supports the claim that the rolls followed the committed method and were not changed after commitment. Orion’s verifier puts the limitation plainly: “Provable fairness proves the dice were not tampered with, which is a narrower and more honest claim than ‘the game is fair’ in general.” That is Orion’s characterization, not an independent certification.

The check does not establish that every part of Orion is fair, that the seed came from a truly random physical process, or that the deployed service has been independently audited. The official Orion pages reviewed describe the mechanism, but do not provide an independent audit report of its deployed verification process.

- Get the game ID. Use the ID for the completed server game you want to check.
- Open Orion’s verifier. Go to orionbackgammon.com/fairness.
- Enter the game ID. The verifier checks the revealed seed against the commitment and recomputes the rolls in your browser.
- Review the result. A matching commitment and rolls support the claim that the dice were not changed after the commitment. They do not certify the rest of the game or service.
Online verification versus visible physical dice
In over-the-board backgammon, players can see the dice rolled. That offers direct visibility into the roll, while Orion’s verifier checks whether online rolls match a pre-game commitment. These approaches answer different trust questions: watching a physical roll does not audit online play, and checking an online commitment does not make every aspect of a service transparent.

Orion is published by Arthea, LLC and made by Arthea GameLab. Its official page says it is free to play on iPhone, iPad, and Android. The app uses the familiar components of fifteen checkers, two dice, and a doubling cube. A physical backgammon set is an alternative if you prefer visible, in-person rolls; it is not needed to use Orion or verify an Orion match.
