Yes—you can check cholesterol at home with a finger-stick kit, but treat the number as screening information, not a diagnosis. The exact device determines whether you see total cholesterol alone or a broader set of markers. A high, surprising, or technically questionable result should be confirmed through a clinician-ordered laboratory test and interpreted with your overall health history.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts the basic point plainly: “The only way to know whether you have high cholesterol is to get your cholesterol checked.” Its cholesterol-testing page was last reviewed May 15, 2024, and explains how testing fits into medical care.

What DIY cholesterol monitoring actually does

A home cholesterol test uses a small blood sample, usually a drop collected from a finger stick. FDA describes over-the-counter tests that use reagent paper or a small meter to analyze that sample. Depending on the model, the result may be a single total-cholesterol value or several measurements. Read the exact package and instructions before assuming you are getting a full lipid panel.

A laboratory lipid profile is the more complete clinical reference. CDC describes it as a blood test that checks total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Home products do not all report those four values, so the phrase “cholesterol test” is not enough to establish what a kit measures.

For context, CDC reported that 86.4 million U.S. adults age 20 or older had high or borderline-high total cholesterol during 2017–2020, defining that category as total cholesterol of at least 200 mg/dL. That statistic is not a 2024 or 2026 estimate; it describes the 2017–2020 period.

What does an at-home cholesterol test measure?

There are two broad types of home result:

  • Total cholesterol only: Some kits provide one number. That can flag a result that deserves follow-up, but it cannot show how HDL, LDL or triglycerides contribute to the result.
  • Multiple markers: Some kits also report HDL and triglycerides. Do not assume that a multi-result device includes LDL, or that its calculation and reporting are equivalent to a laboratory lipid profile. Confirm every marker in the model’s labeling.

Mayo Clinic notes that kits differ in exactly this way: some measure only total cholesterol, while others also measure HDL and triglycerides. Its guidance is available in “Cholesterol test kits: Are they accurate?”

How to perform a home cholesterol test

Follow the supplied instructions rather than treating every meter or strip as interchangeable. The usual workflow is:

  1. Confirm the kit and strips. Check the exact model, the measurements it reports, expiration dates and storage conditions. Use only new strips authorized for sale in the United States. FDA warns against previously owned or unauthorized strips.
  2. Check preparation requirements. Some tests specify fasting and others do not. Do not invent a fasting period; use the kit’s directions. If you are testing to answer a clinician’s question, ask that clinician how to prepare.
  3. Wash and dry your hands. Residue, moisture or food on a fingertip can contaminate the sample or dilute it. Use the hand-cleaning method stated in the instructions.
  4. Set up the meter or reagent card. Verify that the code, calibration step or strip insertion procedure matches the manual. Keep the strip container closed except when removing a strip.
  5. Use the supplied lancet on the fingertip. Follow the device’s safety directions and use a new, sterile lancet. Do not share lancets or reuse them.
  6. Apply the blood drop exactly as directed. The strip may require a specific drop size or application point. Avoid squeezing aggressively unless the instructions specifically permit it, because poor collection technique can affect the reading.
  7. Wait for the result and record the details. Note the date, time, units, whether you followed a fasting instruction, the device model and each reported marker. Keep a photo or written log so a clinician can see the context.
  8. Dispose of sharps safely. Put the used lancet in an appropriate puncture-resistant sharps container according to local disposal rules.

Are home cholesterol test kits accurate?

There is no single accuracy percentage for the entire product category. FDA advises consumers to check the package information for accuracy and says that traceability to CDC reference methods can be an indicator of accuracy. Mayo Clinic likewise emphasizes that performance varies by brand and that following instructions carefully matters.

Accuracy has several parts:

  • Analytical performance: The meter and strip must measure the intended analyte within the limits described in the product labeling.
  • Sample quality: An insufficient, contaminated or improperly applied blood drop can produce an unreliable reading.
  • Storage and expiration: Heat, humidity, light or expired strips can compromise a test even when the meter works normally.
  • Interpretation: A technically valid number can still be misleading if the kit reports only total cholesterol or if it is viewed without other risk factors.

FDA’s general home-use guidance explains that most home-test results are best evaluated alongside medical history, a physical examination and other tests. A home result therefore should not replace routine care or a clinician’s interpretation. See FDA’s Home Use Tests guidance.

Home kit versus a laboratory lipid profile

Use this comparison to decide what a home result can and cannot answer. The “home” column describes the product category; the exact model’s labeling controls.

Question Home cholesterol kit Laboratory lipid profile
Markers reported Total cholesterol only on some kits; other models may add HDL and triglycerides. Exact capabilities vary. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, as described by CDC.
Sample and workflow Finger-stick blood drop analyzed with a strip, reagent paper or small meter. Blood draw performed through a clinical laboratory.
Fasting Only if the kit instructions say so; requirements differ. CDC says preparation may require fasting for 8 to 12 hours. Ask the ordering clinician what applies to you.
Quality information Review the exact package claims, accuracy information, storage rules and strip compatibility. The ordering practice and laboratory provide collection and reporting procedures.
FDA status Verify the exact model in FDA’s database and confirm that replacement strips are authorized for U.S. sale. The clinician or laboratory selects the test and receives the report.
Interpretation You must arrange professional interpretation if the result is high, unexpected or inconsistent with your history. A health care professional can interpret the complete profile with your risk factors and decide whether to repeat it.

CDC’s testing guidance is at https://www.cdc.gov/cholesterol/testing/. Do not use a home number as a direct substitute for a laboratory panel when a clinician has ordered the latter.

Fasting, timing and preparation

Fasting is not universal for home testing. Follow the kit’s directions, and ask your clinician if the test is part of an evaluation or medication decision. CDC notes that a laboratory lipid profile may require 8 to 12 hours of fasting. Water, medicines and other preparation details can depend on your clinical instructions, so do not change medication or food intake solely because a website recommends it.

Record circumstances that could help explain a result, such as whether you were fasting, the time of day, the kit model and any error message. If you obtain a result under conditions that differ from the instructions, treat it as questionable and arrange proper follow-up rather than trying to mathematically correct it.

How to interpret a high or unexpected reading

Do not start, stop or change cholesterol medication based only on a home result. FDA’s consumer cholesterol page advises speaking with a doctor when total cholesterol is above 200 mg/dL and notes that the clinician may recommend repeating the test. That 200 mg/dL figure is FDA’s stated consumer-follow-up guidance, not a complete individualized treatment target for every person. Read the page at FDA: Cholesterol—Home Use Tests.

Contact a health care professional when:

  • the total cholesterol reading is above 200 mg/dL;
  • the value is unexpectedly different from previous results;
  • the kit reports an error, an invalid control, or a result outside its stated measuring range;
  • you cannot confirm that the strips are authorized, unexpired and compatible with the meter; or
  • you need an LDL value, a complete lipid profile or advice about treatment.

Clinicians interpret cholesterol alongside factors such as family history, age, smoking and other aspects of health. A single home reading cannot supply that risk assessment.

How to choose and verify a kit

Before opening a box, use this checklist:

  • Identify the exact model: Record the manufacturer’s model name and the list of reported markers.
  • Check authorization: Search the FDA over-the-counter device database for the model rather than relying on a generic marketplace description. The database includes a record for the CardioChek Home Test System and home-test strips; the record is effective December 22, 2016. Availability and compatibility can change, so verify the current product and strip listing at FDA’s OTC device database.
  • Read the accuracy section: Look for the population, specimen type, measuring range and any reference-method or CDC-traceability information supplied by the maker.
  • Confirm strip compatibility: Strips are not universal. Use the part number specified for your meter, keep the container sealed and observe storage limits.
  • Check the units: Make sure the display uses the units your clinician expects, commonly mg/dL in the United States.
  • Review limitations: Confirm whether the kit requires fasting, excludes certain users, or warns about medications or medical conditions that can interfere.

FDA’s home-use information also explains why authorization and clear instructions matter. CDC separately maintains information about waived laboratory tests at https://www.cdc.gov/lab-quality/php/waived-tests/; do not infer a product’s status from a retailer listing alone.

Common problems and what to do

The meter shows an error or no result

Check strip insertion, expiration, storage temperature, sample volume and the meter’s battery or calibration procedure. Repeat only with a new authorized strip if the instructions allow it. Persistent errors warrant contacting the manufacturer or obtaining a clinical test.

The result seems implausible

Do not keep repeating tests until one looks reassuring. Review hand cleaning, fasting instructions, strip storage and the blood-drop technique, then arrange a laboratory test or clinician review. Record both the questionable value and the conditions in which it was obtained.

The kit reports total cholesterol but you need LDL

A total-cholesterol result cannot answer an LDL-specific question. Ask a clinician for a laboratory lipid profile or another appropriately ordered test that reports the required markers.

Someone suggests using old or shared strips

Do not do it. FDA specifically warns against previously owned or unauthorized strips. Use new, authorized supplies that match the exact meter.

When home monitoring is useful—and when it is not enough

A home kit can be useful for an initial screening conversation, for documenting a result before contacting a clinician, or for people who need a convenient way to check whether a reading may be abnormal. Its value is greatest when you preserve the model, strip lot or expiration information, preparation details and date alongside the number.

It is not enough when a diagnosis, medication decision, cardiovascular-risk assessment or complete lipid profile is required. In those situations, arrange the clinical test and interpretation rather than trying to manage the result yourself. FDA emphasizes that home-test results generally need to be considered with medical history, examination and other tests, while CDC says management decisions should be made with a health care professional.

Bottom line for DIY cholesterol monitoring

You can check cholesterol at home, usually with a finger-stick, but a kit is a screening tool whose capabilities and reliability depend on the exact model, strips and technique. Confirm what markers it measures, follow its preparation and sampling instructions, use only new authorized U.S. strips, and verify the model in FDA resources. Treat a total cholesterol result above 200 mg/dL, an unexpected value or any questionable test as a reason to contact a clinician and, when advised, obtain a laboratory lipid profile.
