Not literally. Chaos engineering requires an executable system, its dependencies, telemetry, and a recovery path. An architecture diagram cannot receive a fault or emit runtime evidence. Before implementation, however, you can do valuable resilience engineering: model failure modes, define steady-state and recovery hypotheses, rehearse incidents, build a representative slice, and design the controls that will make later experiments safe and meaningful.
The boundary: planning is not a chaos experiment
A chaos experiment changes a running system and observes whether it behaves as predicted. The target must be able to receive an action such as a process termination, API error, network delay, packet drop, DNS block, database failover, or replication impairment. It must also expose enough telemetry to show what users and operators experienced, and it must have a recovery mechanism that can be observed.
A diagram, requirements document, or list of planned services has none of those runtime properties. You can inspect it for unsafe assumptions, but you cannot claim that the eventual production system has been chaos-tested. The precise descriptions for pre-build work are resilience modeling, hypothesis development, fault-injection design, simulation, or testing a representative slice.

Amazon Web Services defines chaos engineering as “the end-to-end verification of unknown failure modes, with the goal of catching defects early, and remediating these before they turn into large-scale events.” “End-to-end” is the important boundary: the verification concerns observed behavior across a functioning path, not only the intent recorded in an architecture document.

What you can do before code exists
1. Build a failure-mode and dependency model
Start with the user journeys that must remain available, then map every component and external dependency those journeys cross. Include application nodes, networks, storage, databases, identity providers, third-party APIs, deployment systems, queues, observability services, and the people who operate them.
For each dependency, record the failure modes that matter:
- What happens if it is unavailable, slow, returning malformed data, or returning authorization errors?
- Is the dependency required for every request, or only for a secondary feature?
- Can traffic fail over to another instance, region, queue, or provider?
- What data can be replayed, rebuilt, or safely discarded?
- Which customer-visible journey is degraded when the dependency fails?
This exercise can expose single points of failure and circular recovery assumptions before they become code. It does not establish how the implemented system will actually behave under load.

2. Write steady-state and recovery hypotheses
A useful hypothesis states the normal condition, the injected fault, the expected user experience, and the evidence that would confirm recovery. For example: “If one application instance is terminated during synthetic checkout traffic, requests should continue with no lost orders, error rate should remain below the agreed threshold, and capacity should return to its pre-fault level within the recovery objective.”
Define the recovery objective in terms the team can measure: maximum tolerated error rate, latency percentile, recovery time, queue age, or data-loss boundary. Also define what “steady state” means before the fault. Metrics, logs, and request tracing are needed both to establish that baseline and to understand impact while the experiment runs.

Write competing expectations when the design is uncertain. A hypothesis that could be falsified is more useful than a statement such as “the platform is highly available.”
3. Rehearse with tabletop exercises and game days
A tabletop exercise uses a scenario and discussion rather than a fault-injection tool. Walk through detection, escalation, incident ownership, customer communication, rollback, access approvals, and the decision to stop or continue. Ask participants to identify the dashboard they would open and the person authorized to make each risky change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA game day is a structured operational rehearsal. Begin with lower-level environments and scenarios that have a small blast radius. As the team gains confidence, use more representative staging or pre-production conditions. The output is an improved runbook, clearer decision rights, and a list of technical gaps; it is not proof that the future production implementation will recover correctly.
4. Build a disposable representative slice
You do not need the entire product to test every resilience assumption. A vertical slice can contain one critical request path, a contract-tested service, synthetic traffic, and simulated dependencies. Use it to exercise timeouts, retry budgets, circuit breakers, fallbacks, queue behavior, idempotency, and failover logic.
Dependency simulators and traffic-replay harnesses are especially useful when the real provider or data set is unavailable. Label the resulting observations as prototype or model evidence. They can falsify a contract or reveal an infinite retry loop, but they cannot prove that production infrastructure, traffic patterns, data volume, or operator procedures will behave the same way.

5. Design safety controls into the architecture
Decide how an experiment will be constrained before anyone injects a fault. Specify the target scope, maximum blast radius, synthetic or production traffic allowed, abort thresholds, rollback action, monitoring owner, and communication channel. Include a way to stop the fault independently of the component being tested.
These controls are architectural requirements, not paperwork added at the end. If the design cannot state how to halt an experiment or restore service, it is not ready for fault injection.
A staged path from architecture to production
| Stage | Work to perform | Evidence you can claim | What remains unproven |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Failure-mode analysis, dependency map, steady-state and recovery objectives, telemetry design, experiment backlog | Design assumptions and missing controls have been identified | Runtime behavior, actual recovery, and emergent interactions |
| Prototype or vertical slice | Contract tests, simulated dependencies, retries, timeouts, fallbacks, synthetic traffic | Selected contracts and recovery logic can be falsified or supported in the model | Production infrastructure, real data, full traffic, and operator performance |
| Development and test | Bounded fault injection with dashboards, ownership, and abort conditions | The implemented components respond to selected faults under test conditions | Production-scale capacity and unmodeled dependencies |
| Staging or pre-production | Use an environment as close to production as practical; rehearse game-day procedures | End-to-end behavior under selected faults in a representative environment | Differences in live traffic, data, regional conditions, and real customer impact |
| Production or canary | Compare control and experiment deployments with strict guardrails and stop conditions | Observed behavior for the chosen fault under real-world or carefully controlled synthetic traffic | Faults, combinations, and scale conditions not included in the experiment |
Progression matters because confidence depends on representativeness and observed recovery. If production testing is unavailable, pre-production should be made as close to production as practical rather than treated as an unrelated test environment.
How to design the first executable experiment
- Choose one user journey. Name the request path, customer impact that matters, and the service owner.
- State the hypothesis. Include the steady-state baseline, the exact fault, expected degradation, and recovery objective.
- Check operational readiness. Confirm dashboards, logs, traces, access, on-call coverage, rollback instructions, and a communication plan.
- Limit the target. Select one instance, pod, dependency call, queue partition, or canary cohort instead of an entire fleet.
- Define stop conditions. Examples include an error-rate threshold, latency threshold, queue growth, data-integrity alert, or loss of monitoring. The condition must identify who stops the experiment and how.
- Inject the fault. Apply one controlled action first. Chained or compound actions should wait until single-fault behavior is understood.
- Observe impact and recovery. Compare user-facing metrics with the baseline, follow requests across services, and record time to detect, mitigate, and recover.
- Remove the fault and verify normal state. Confirm that replicas, queues, connections, and data have returned to the intended condition.
- Turn findings into changes. Update code, runbooks, alerts, capacity limits, or the next experiment based on what was observed.
Faults worth modeling and later injecting
| Fault class | Example action | Behavior to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Terminate an instance or pod | Load balancing, replacement speed, session handling, and capacity during recovery |
| Database | Trigger a controlled database failover | Connection renewal, write consistency, retry behavior, and data-loss boundary |
| Network | Add latency or drop packets | Timeouts, retry budgets, circuit breakers, and user-visible degradation |
| Name resolution | Block or impair DNS | Client caching, resolver dependence, fallback endpoints, and alerting |
| Service response | Inject API errors or malformed responses | Fallbacks, validation, idempotency, and whether failures are safely surfaced |
| Replication | Impair replication between components | Lag detection, consistency decisions, failover safety, and recovery procedures |
Each action should be tied to a specific hypothesis. Injecting a random fault without a predicted outcome produces noise rather than useful learning.
How to compare a simulation, test environment, and production experiment
| Dimension | Simulation or prototype | Development or test | Production or canary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dependency and traffic realism | Selected contracts and synthetic traffic | Implemented services with controlled traffic | Real-world or production-like traffic and dependencies |
| Blast radius | Usually contained to the model | Bounded by test environment and target scope | Potential customer impact; requires the strongest controls |
| Observability | Only what the harness and slice expose | Dashboards, logs, and traces for tested components | End-to-end signals, business metrics, and operational alerts |
| Reversibility | Reset or recreate the model | Rollback and environment reset | Abort path, rollback, traffic controls, and staffed response |
| Transfer to production | Evidence about assumptions and contracts | Evidence about selected implementation behavior | Direct evidence for the specific fault and conditions tested |
No row makes a prototype equivalent to production. A more realistic environment improves transfer, but even a successful production experiment covers only the fault, scope, traffic, and recovery path that were actually exercised.

Observability is part of the experiment, not an afterthought
At minimum, define a baseline and signals for the user journey under test. Metrics should show request success, latency, saturation, queue depth or age, and recovery progress where those measures apply. Logs need enough context to connect failures to a request or operation. Distributed traces help establish whether the injected fault propagated across service boundaries.
Also monitor the experiment itself: target identity, start and end time, injected action, scope, and current stop-condition values. If monitoring disappears during the fault, treat that loss as a safety failure and stop rather than assuming the system is healthy.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling a diagram a chaos test. Call it failure-mode analysis and use it to create hypotheses.
- Testing before a recovery path exists. Add rollback, replacement, failover, or restoration steps before injecting faults.
- Using a toy prototype as production proof. Record exactly which contracts were tested and list the infrastructure and traffic differences.
- Starting with compound failures. Learn the response to one bounded fault before chaining actions.
- Skipping telemetry design. Define metrics, logs, traces, and a baseline before the experiment window.
- Leaving stop authority ambiguous. Name the person or role that can abort and give them an independent control path.
- Ignoring people and procedures. Include escalation, customer communication, access, and rollback in every game day.
- Treating staging as automatically representative. Compare versions, topology, data shape, limits, and traffic patterns with production and document material differences.
Tools become relevant only after a runnable target exists
A managed service such as AWS Fault Injection Service supports controlled experiments, predefined scenarios, and chained actions. AWS guidance also discusses integrations or complementary tools such as Chaos Mesh and Litmus. These tools can automate scope, actions, and observations, but they do not create the executable dependencies, telemetry, recovery path, or safety policy that an experiment requires.
Select tooling against the experiment’s needs: realism of dependencies and traffic, blast-radius controls, observability, reversibility, setup time, and how directly results transfer to production. A tool choice is a later implementation decision; the architecture and operational controls should not depend on a particular product being selected today.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
Design reviews can reveal missing assumptions, unsafe dependencies, and absent controls. Prototypes can falsify contracts and recovery logic. Development and pre-production experiments can validate behavior for selected faults. A controlled production or canary experiment can provide the strongest evidence for the exact conditions tested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a tabletop exercise be called chaos engineering?
It is better described as incident rehearsal or a game day. It can validate roles, decisions, communications, and runbooks, but it does not inject a fault into a running application.
When is the earliest honest point to run a real chaos experiment?
As soon as a deployable slice has an executable target, observable behavior, and a reversible recovery path. It does not need to be the complete product, but its results apply only to the slice and conditions tested.
Is a simulator useless if it cannot represent production exactly?
No. A simulator can expose contract violations, unsafe retries, timeout interactions, and fallback defects early. Treat its findings as evidence about the modeled assumptions, then retest when real dependencies and infrastructure exist.
What should happen if the experiment causes an unexpected outage?
Use the predeclared stop condition, halt the fault through the independent control path, execute rollback or restoration, preserve telemetry, and record the timeline. Do not extend the experiment while the team is still uncertain about customer impact.
Do all teams need to test in production?
No. Non-production testing is the required starting point. Production or canary testing is appropriate only when the organization can constrain scope, observe impact, stop quickly, and recover safely; otherwise, improve the representativeness and controls of pre-production.
The Bottom Line
You cannot chaos-test a nonexistent system, but you can begin resilience engineering immediately. Model failures, define measurable hypotheses, rehearse response, build a representative slice, and design guardrails first. Move fault injection through development and production-like environments only as the target and recovery evidence become real.
