No—not through a documented viewer setting. YouTube’s current desktop Help guidance explains navigation and account controls, but it does not document a switch for changing the overall desktop page layout or returning to an older interface. The “channel layout” editor is a separate YouTube Studio tool for creators, while recommendation and custom-feed controls change which videos appear, not how YouTube’s interface is arranged.
What YouTube’s desktop settings actually provide
YouTube’s desktop navigation guide describes the main viewer areas: Home, Search, the Guide, Subscriptions, History and account settings. It does not list a general display-layout selector, theme of page arrangement, compact-mode switch or “old YouTube” toggle.
That means a viewer cannot use YouTube’s documented settings to choose a different overall desktop structure—for example, a different position for the sidebar, a different video-grid design or a previous version of the homepage. YouTube may change its interface, test variations or show different features to different accounts, but the Help documentation does not provide a viewer control that manually selects one of those layouts.
If your goal is to change what you see rather than where controls are placed, YouTube offers narrower tools. Watch-history settings influence recommendations, and an experimental custom feed can provide an alternative stream for eligible accounts. Neither feature is a desktop layout theme.

Viewer layout and channel layout are different features
The most common source of confusion is YouTube’s phrase “channel layout.” The documented layout editor belongs to YouTube Studio’s channel customization tools. It changes the Home tab of a channel that you own or manage; it does not redesign YouTube for people watching videos.

So a creator can rearrange sections on their own channel, but a viewer cannot apply that editor to YouTube’s Home page, watch page or site-wide navigation.
How creators change their own channel Home tab
If you own a channel and meant its public Home tab, the supported workflow is in YouTube Studio rather than the ordinary viewer settings.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Customization.
- Open the Home tab area.
- Use the layout controls to add or manage the channel trailer, featured video and content sections.
- Reorder sections as needed, staying within the documented maximum of 12 custom sections.
- Save or publish the changes shown by Studio, then view the channel as a visitor to check the result.
This process affects how visitors see that specific channel. It does not alter the Home page, sidebar or watch-page arrangement that you see while browsing other channels.

If you want different videos on Home
YouTube says homepage recommendations for signed-in viewers primarily rely on watch history. The recommendations guidance also explains that turning off or deleting watch history can affect the recommendations and homepage content shown to you.
What changing watch history does
- It changes a major signal used to select videos for your Home recommendations.
- Turning history off prevents future viewing activity from being used in the same way for recommendations.
- Deleting existing history removes that activity from the history used for personalization.
- The result is a different set of suggested videos, not a different arrangement of YouTube’s desktop controls.
Use history controls when the problem is “YouTube keeps showing me the wrong subjects” or “I do not want this viewing activity to influence Home.” Do not expect them to move the sidebar, resize the page or restore a previous interface.
Decide before deleting history
History is not merely a list of past videos; YouTube identifies it as a primary input for homepage recommendations. Deleting or disabling it can therefore change future personalization. If you only want to remove the influence of one subject, consider the least destructive history option available in your account rather than assuming that a layout change is required.
The experimental custom feed: a content alternative, not a layout switch
YouTube documents an experimental custom-feed feature in its YouTube Home custom-feed help page. It is intended for eligible viewers who want a private, customized stream of videos instead of relying solely on the standard Home recommendations.

Eligibility and prerequisites
The documented boundaries are specific:
- You must be in the United States.
- Your YouTube language must be set to English.
- You must be signed in.
- Watch history and search history must be turned on.
- The device language must be English.
Availability can change because the feature is experimental. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee that every account will see the option.
How the custom feed behaves
- Each account can maintain one private custom feed at a time.
- The feed is private to that account; it does not publish your prompt or choices to other viewers.
- The custom-feed prompt expires after 30 days of inactivity.
- You can return to the standard Home experience rather than being locked into the custom feed.
What to do if the option appears
- Open YouTube Home while signed in on an eligible account.
- Look for YouTube’s own custom-feed entry or prompt and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
- Provide the requested description of the content you want surfaced.
- Use the resulting private feed when you want that customized selection, and return to standard Home when you want ordinary recommendations.
The exact presentation may change while YouTube tests the feature. If no custom-feed prompt appears, that absence is consistent with its experimental status and does not indicate a missing desktop-layout setting.
Can you switch back to the old YouTube desktop layout?
YouTube’s current desktop Help material does not document an official “classic layout,” “old layout” or rollback switch for viewers. Account settings therefore cannot be used, according to the documented guidance, to select a previous site-wide interface.

The controls moved
This is an interface arrangement issue. The Help guide identifies the standard destinations—Home, Search, Guide, Subscriptions, History and account settings—but does not provide a setting for choosing their placement or an earlier visual design.
The videos changed
This is a recommendation issue. Review watch and search history settings, because YouTube says activity and history influence Home recommendations. A custom feed may also be available to eligible US accounts using English, but it changes the content stream rather than the surrounding page structure.

Troubleshooting when you cannot find the setting
You are in ordinary YouTube settings
That is expected: the desktop navigation documentation does not list an overall layout selector there. Check whether your actual need concerns recommendations or a channel you manage before searching through account menus.

You are trying to edit someone else’s channel
Channel Home customization is an owner or manager function in YouTube Studio. A viewer cannot rearrange another creator’s sections, and doing so would not change their own YouTube Home page anyway.

Your recommendations changed after history was altered
That behavior matches YouTube’s explanation that watch history is a primary recommendation signal. Review the history controls before treating the change as a layout problem. Remember that turning history off or deleting it can itself alter what appears on Home.
The custom-feed option is missing
Check the documented prerequisites: United States location, English selected in YouTube, English device language, sign-in and both watch and search history enabled. If all are satisfied and the feature still does not appear, its experimental availability may simply not include your account at that time.
You want a compact or classic desktop view
YouTube’s official desktop guidance does not document a viewer setting for that request. You can use the normal navigation and account controls described in the guide, but there is no supported YouTube preference that selects an alternate overall layout.
What the official guidance establishes—and what it does not
The documentation establishes a clear separation between three functions: site navigation for viewers, channel-page arrangement for creators and recommendation or custom-feed controls for content selection. It does not establish a viewer-facing control for changing YouTube’s overall desktop layout, a guaranteed way to revert to an earlier design or a universal custom-feed rollout.
Consequently, the correct answer to “Can you change YouTube’s desktop layout in settings?” is no—not with a documented YouTube viewer setting. Choose the tool that matches the real problem: Studio customization for your own channel, history controls for recommendations, or the experimental custom feed when your account is eligible.
