No. PlayStation does not let you change the country or region on an existing PSN account. If a game is sold only through another country’s PlayStation Store, the supported workaround is to create a separate PSN account for that storefront, fund it with an accepted local payment method or voucher, and buy the game there. Your US account keeps its purchases, trophies, saves and subscriptions, while the second account owns the new purchase.
What happens to the region on a PSN account?
The country or region is selected when the account is created and is permanent afterward. PlayStation Support states: “Once created, your country/region can’t be changed.” Sony’s US Terms of Service use similar language: “Once your account is created, you will not be able to change the country or region code associated with your account.” There is no setting that migrates a US account to Japan, the United Kingdom, Europe or another storefront.

The region is more than a display preference. It determines which PlayStation Store you use, which billing rules apply, and which voucher codes can be redeemed. Sony also requires account information to be accurate and reserves the right to suspend, terminate or restrict an account that uses false information. Selecting another country simply to obtain a cheaper price or an earlier release can therefore create an account-compliance problem if the registration details are not truthful.

The practical route: create a separate regional account
A second account is the normal way to shop in a storefront other than the one attached to your US account. It does not convert the US account; it creates a new account with its own country, purchases and account history.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
1. Keep the US account unchanged
Do not delete or recreate your existing account to chase a different storefront. Its digital purchases, trophies, saved data and subscriptions remain associated with that account. There is no supported migration that transfers those records to a new country.
2. Create a new PSN account for the target storefront
On a PlayStation console, begin from the profile or user menu, choose the option to add a user, and select the choice to create a new PlayStation account. You can also create the account through Sony’s account-creation flow. During registration, select the country or region that corresponds to the storefront you intend to use and enter accurate information. Menu wording can vary by console model and system software, but the country choice is made during account creation and cannot be edited later.
Only choose a country for which you can maintain legitimate account details and obtain an accepted payment method or voucher. A Japanese or European account is not a risk-free switch for someone who cannot satisfy that storefront’s billing requirements.

3. Sign in to the regional account when shopping
Switch users before opening the PlayStation Store, then confirm that the store and currency match the new account’s country. The account that opens the store is the account that will own the transaction. Keep credentials for both accounts secure, and note which account bought each title; the purchase will not appear in the US account’s purchase history.
4. Fund the account with a compatible method
Sony ties transaction eligibility and billing information to the account’s country or area. A card issued in the US, or billing details that do not match the regional account, may be rejected. The alternative is a PlayStation Store voucher or gift card issued for the target country. Sony’s support guidance is explicit that the voucher code and the account’s country/region must match for activation to succeed.
5. Buy and download the game from that account
Complete the purchase while signed in to the regional account. Sony’s purchase documentation says you cannot purchase or download items from a country or region other than the one selected when the account was created. The license therefore stays with the regional account, not the US account. To avoid ownership confusion, record the purchasing account and use that account whenever the game or its add-ons require an entitlement check.

Can you play the purchase from your US account?
Purchases remain tied to the account that made them. A second account can let you access another storefront, but it does not merge libraries, trophies, saves or subscriptions. Whether another local user can launch a particular digital game depends on the console’s account-sharing and license settings; those settings do not change ownership. The reliable baseline is to sign in to the purchasing account when downloading, restoring or troubleshooting the title.
Keep saved progress in the account where you intend to earn trophies and maintain the game’s entitlement. Starting a game under one account and later moving to another can leave trophies, cloud saves or add-on access separated between profiles.
Why a credit card or voucher may fail
- Country mismatch: The card, billing address or account country can disagree. Sony says transaction eligibility and billing may be tied to the account’s country or area, and mismatched card information may be rejected.
- Voucher mismatch: A code intended for the US Store will not activate on a Japanese or European account. The voucher’s country must match the account’s country.
- Wrong store session: If you are still signed in to the US profile, you may be viewing the US Store and attempting to redeem a code intended for the second account.
- Insufficient balance: A voucher may add funds but not cover the entire price, including any applicable tax shown by that storefront.
When a payment is declined, first verify the active profile and the account country, then check that the payment method or voucher was issued for that same country. Do not repeatedly alter registration details to make a card pass; Sony’s terms require accurate information and permit enforcement against false details.

Will DLC work with an imported PS5 or PS4 disc?
Region matching is critical for physical games. PlayStation Support warns: “An add-on can’t be used with a game on disc if its country/region doesn’t match with the country/region of the game on disc.” A Japanese disc paired with US DLC, for example, can leave the add-on unavailable even if both versions use the same language or run on the same console.
Before buying an add-on
- Identify the licensed country or region of the physical disc, using the edition information on the case or product listing.
- Open the PlayStation Store with an account whose storefront corresponds to that disc’s region.
- Buy the add-on from that matching storefront, not simply from the store you normally use.
- Check that the add-on appears as compatible with the installed game before spending funds.
For a digital base game, keep the base game and its DLC on the same regional account and storefront as a practical way to avoid entitlement mismatches. Sony’s explicit warning concerns disc-and-add-on country matching, so do not assume that a US add-on will work with every imported edition.

Does a VPN change your PSN region?
The official support and terms pages do not establish that a VPN changes PSN eligibility or provide a VPN as a supported method for bypassing country restrictions. A VPN can alter the apparent network location, but it does not change the country permanently recorded on an account, make a foreign voucher valid, or transfer a purchase to the US account. Treat the separate-account process, with accurate information and compatible payment, as the supported storefront path.

Choosing between the available routes
| Route | Account continuity | Payment requirement | DLC considerations | Convenience and risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stay with the US account | All existing purchases, trophies, saves and subscriptions remain together. | Use methods accepted by the US Store. | US-store add-ons match games licensed for the US region. | Simple, but it cannot access a title unavailable in the US Store. |
| Create a separate regional account | The new purchase, trophies and related account history belong to the second account. | Use a payment method or voucher accepted in the target country; voucher country must match account country. | Buy add-ons from the storefront that matches the base game, especially for a physical import. | Provides access to another storefront but adds sign-ins and ownership tracking; inaccurate details can trigger enforcement. |
| Import a physical game | The disc is separate from your US digital library and the purchase account. | Buying the disc does not remove the need for a compatible store account for DLC. | The disc’s licensed country/region and add-on country/region must match. | Useful when no local digital listing exists, but regional DLC compatibility must be checked first. |
Troubleshooting common situations
“I cannot find the game in the US Store.”
Confirm that the title is actually offered in another country’s Store rather than delisted everywhere or limited to a different platform. If it is available in a foreign storefront, switch to the account registered to that country. The US account’s country cannot be edited to reveal the listing.
“My foreign voucher says it is invalid.”
Check the voucher’s intended marketplace and the active account’s country. A code and account from different countries will not activate successfully under Sony’s guidance. Redeem it while signed in to the matching regional account, not the US profile.
“My US credit card is declined on the regional account.”
The billing country and account country may not match. Use a payment method accepted by the target storefront or a country-matched PlayStation Store voucher. Do not enter an invented billing address to imitate local residency; Sony’s terms require accurate account information.
“The imported game works, but the DLC does not.”
This is a classic region mismatch. Compare the disc’s licensed country/region with the add-on’s storefront country. If they differ, the add-on may not be usable with that disc. Obtain an add-on from the storefront matching the disc, or use a base-game edition and DLC released for the same region.
“The game appears on the console, but I cannot restore it from my US account.”
Restore or download it from the account that purchased it. A license bought on the regional account is not part of the US account’s purchase history, so signing into the wrong profile can make the title appear unavailable even when it is installed on the console.
Checklist before you create the second account
- Verify that the game is listed in the intended country’s PlayStation Store.
- Confirm that you can provide accurate registration information for that account.
- Secure a payment method or PlayStation Store voucher issued for the same country.
- Decide where you want the game’s trophies, saves and subscription-related activity to live.
- If you are importing a disc, identify its licensed country/region before purchasing DLC.
- Keep both account credentials and purchase receipts organized so future downloads use the correct owner account.
Bottom line for US players
You cannot change the region of an existing PSN account. Leave the US account intact and, when the title is sold only elsewhere, create a separate account for the target storefront using accurate information. Pay with a method or voucher accepted in that country, remember that the purchase belongs to the new account, and match every physical game’s DLC to the disc’s licensed region.
