Yes. You can change the Epic Games display name used for Fortnite without buying V-Bucks, a rename token, or another paid item. Epic requires a verified email address and permits one display-name change every two weeks (14 days), counted from your most recent change.
The change is made in Epic Games Account settings rather than in a Fortnite menu. There is one important exception: on PlayStation and Xbox, Fortnite can show your console account name instead of your Epic display name, so you may need to change the PSN Online ID or Xbox Gamertag separately.

What “your Fortnite name” actually means
Fortnite does not have a completely separate rename system for every platform. In most cases, the name other players see is the display name attached to the Epic Games account that you use for Fortnite. Changing that account setting changes the Epic identity associated with your Fortnite profile on supported platforms.

Because console networks can substitute their own account names, first identify which name is appearing in your matches, friends list, or lobby. The platform distinction is the most common reason a player changes an Epic name and still sees the old-looking name on a console.
Is changing a Fortnite name free?
Epic’s documented procedure does not list a fee, paid token, subscription, or in-game purchase. The normal Epic display-name change is therefore a free account-setting action. You only need access to the correct Epic Games account and a verified email address.
Be cautious of websites or players offering “instant” renames for payment. A legitimate rename is completed through your Epic account settings, not through a third-party service, a V-Bucks purchase, or a code sent by another player. Never give someone your password or an email verification code to perform the change.
What you need before starting
- The Epic Games account that is linked to the Fortnite profile you intend to rename.
- An email address verified on that Epic account.
- A name you are willing to keep during the waiting period after saving it.
- Access to a web browser, because the documented change is made through Epic Account settings.
How often can you change the name?
Epic’s rule is one display-name change every two weeks. In calendar terms, that is a 14-day interval measured from the last successful change, rather than an unlimited number of changes during a day or week.
If the account is still inside that interval, the Display name field can show a lock. Epic says hovering over the information icon beside the field reveals when the previous change occurred. That date is the useful reference point: wait until the interval has elapsed, then return to the same setting.

The cooldown applies to the Epic display name. It does not turn a PlayStation Online ID or Xbox Gamertag into an Epic rename, and changing a console name follows the console provider’s own rules and availability.
Step-by-step: change your Epic display name
- Sign in to the right Epic account. Use the account that is actually linked to your Fortnite profile. If you have more than one Epic account, check the account identity before editing anything; changing another account will not rename the profile you play on.
- Open Account settings. From the signed-in Epic Games account area, go to the account settings page. The display-name control is an account setting, not a control inside a Fortnite match or the game’s general settings menu.
- Find the Display name box. The current public name appears in the field labeled Display name. If the field is editable, select it and enter the new name you want to use.
- Review the entry before saving. Check spelling, capitalization, and whether you are changing the intended account. Because another change may be unavailable until the cooldown ends, treat this as a deliberate choice rather than a temporary test.
- Select Continue. Use the Continue button to submit and save the new display name. A successful save changes the Epic display name associated with the account.
- Return to Fortnite and check the relevant platform. On platforms that use Epic’s name, the updated identity should be associated with that account. If a console still shows its own account name, follow the platform-specific route below instead of repeating the Epic edit.
Where the name is controlled on each platform
Epic distinguishes between platforms that use the Epic display name and consoles that may substitute their network identity. Use this comparison before troubleshooting a name that appears unchanged.

Epic’s wording is that changing the Epic display name “will not affect your PSN or Xbox gamertags/display names.” Consequently, the same Fortnite account can appear under one name on a computer or Switch and another on PlayStation or Xbox. That is a platform identity difference, not evidence that the Epic change failed.
Why the Display name box is locked
The two-week interval has not ended
A lock normally means the account is still within the waiting period that began with the last display-name change. Hover over the information icon next to the locked field to see when the prior change occurred. Count the full interval from that change rather than assuming the field will unlock at the start of a new day.
The email address is not verified
Epic requires email verification before the documented display-name change is available. Check the inbox for the verification message associated with the signed-in Epic account and complete that verification. If you cannot find it, confirm that you are checking the address on the account you actually use for Fortnite and look in filtered or junk mail folders.

You are signed in to a different Epic account
Players who use several console profiles, social sign-ins, or Epic accounts can easily edit the wrong account. Sign out, identify the Epic account linked to the Fortnite profile, and sign back in before making another change. A successful edit on an unrelated account cannot alter the name attached to your active profile.

The console is displaying its own identity
If the Epic field is editable and the new name saves but PlayStation or Xbox still presents a different name, the console network is likely supplying that label. Change the PSN Online ID or Xbox Gamertag through the corresponding account controls if that is the identity you want displayed there. An Epic setting cannot overwrite those console names.
What a name change does—and does not do
The action changes the public display name on the existing Epic account. It does not create a second Fortnite profile, wipe a locker, reset progression, or remove purchases. You should not make a new account merely to obtain a different name; doing so can separate the new profile from the progress and purchases on your original account.
The visible result depends on where you play. PC, Mac, Switch, and mobile generally use the Epic display name. A PlayStation or Xbox session can continue to show the platform account identity, so check the platform-specific table rather than assuming every screen will update identically.
Changing the name also does not bypass Epic’s conduct rules. A new spelling, punctuation choice, or alternate wording is still subject to the same standards that apply to every display name.

Names Epic can reset
Epic’s Terms of Service allow it to change a display name that is offensive or misleading, violates its Community Rules, or infringes another person’s rights. This is a moderation action, not a voluntary rename and not a way to obtain an extra change outside the normal schedule.
Epic’s reset guidance says a violating name may be replaced with a random display name. After the applicable two-week interval, you can choose a new name that complies with the rules. The reset support guidance also states that the action does not remove gameplay progress or purchases from the account.
How to avoid a reset
- Do not use language that is offensive or targeted at another person or group.
- Do not use a name intended to mislead people about your identity, affiliation, or authority.
- Do not copy another person’s protected identity or use wording that infringes someone else’s rights.
- When in doubt, choose a neutral name that can remain suitable in public matches, streams, and family settings.
A practical decision path before you click Continue
- Identify the visible name. Check whether the name you want to change is the Epic display name or a PlayStation/Xbox account name.
- Check account access. Confirm that you are in the Epic account linked to the correct Fortnite profile and that its email is verified.
- Check the lock state. If the field is locked, use the information icon to find the last-change date and wait for the full interval.
- Screen the proposed name. Remove wording that could be offensive, misleading, or infringing before submitting it.
- Save once. Enter the final spelling and select Continue. Avoid using the one available change on a short-lived experiment.
- Verify on the platform where you play. If a console shows its own network name, make the separate console-account change rather than repeating the Epic procedure.
Common questions about Fortnite name changes
Can I change the name directly inside Fortnite?
The documented Epic process is through the Epic Games account’s Account settings. Fortnite’s in-game menus are not the location specified for changing the Epic display name.
Do I need V-Bucks or a rename card?
No paid item is identified in Epic’s instructions. The normal Epic display-name change is an account-setting action, subject to email verification and the cooldown.
Does changing my Epic name change my PlayStation Online ID?
No. Epic says the Epic display-name change does not affect a PSN Online ID. If PlayStation is showing that identity, use PlayStation’s account controls.

Does changing my Epic name change my Xbox Gamertag?
No. An Xbox Gamertag is controlled by Xbox. Fortnite may therefore show the Gamertag even after the Epic display name has been changed.
What if I changed the name and immediately regret it?
The next Epic display-name change is governed by the same waiting interval. You can prepare the preferred replacement now, but the locked field will not accept another change until the interval has ended.
Will an Epic reset delete my skins or progress?
No. Epic’s reset guidance says a violating name can be replaced while gameplay progress and purchases remain on the account.

Use Epic Account settings for a free Fortnite display-name change, make sure your email is verified, and plan around the one-change-every-14-days cooldown. If the name shown on PlayStation or Xbox is different, change the console account name instead; Epic cannot alter those PSN or Xbox identities.
