Yes. In Baldur’s Gate 3, a Dark Urge character can change their mechanical build through Withers and can edit many cosmetic and identity-presentation settings at the Magic Mirror in camp. These are separate systems: Withers rebuilds how the character plays, while the mirror changes how the character looks and is presented.
Neither system changes the Dark Urge origin or rewrites its story. The mirror also has permanent limits: race, subrace and body type are not editable after character creation.
What each system changes
The quickest way to avoid choosing the wrong menu is to separate build changes from character-editor changes. The following comparison reflects the features Larian documented for the game.

The two options can be used independently or one after the other. Changing your face does not alter your class, and rebuilding your class does not change your appearance.

How to change a Dark Urge’s appearance
1. Enter camp and use the Magic Mirror
Go to camp and interact with the Magic Mirror. Larian introduced the mirror as a repeatable character-editing feature: it can be used whenever you want and as many times as you want. The Dark Urge is eligible to use it, even though the character is an Origin-style protagonist with a defined narrative identity.
2. Edit the supported settings
The documented editable categories are appearance, voice, pronouns and genitals. Use the editor to make the cosmetic changes you want, then complete the confirmation step in the mirror interface. The feature is intended for presentation and customization, not for changing the character’s narrative role.
3. Confirm before saving
Patch 6 notes specify that changes still being edited are not saved if you save the game before confirming the update. Finish the mirror confirmation first, wait for the editor to close, and only then create a save you intend to rely on. If you save while the edit is still pending, reopen the mirror and confirm the changes again rather than assuming the unfinished state was recorded.
What the Magic Mirror cannot change
Race and subrace
Race and subrace are locked after character creation. The mirror does not provide a conversion from one ancestry to another, so a Dark Urge created as one race cannot be turned into a different race or subrace through this feature.
Body type
Body type is also excluded from the mirror’s editable fields. You can adjust the supported appearance settings, but you cannot switch to a different body type after creation.

Origin and story
Appearance editing is cosmetic. It does not remove the Dark Urge origin, alter its background, or undo narrative events. A new voice, pronoun selection or visual design changes presentation only; the character remains the same Dark Urge for story purposes.
Plot-driven physical changes
Some physical changes that occur as part of the plot are not ordinary character-editor settings. The community-maintained bg3.wiki independently notes that the mirror cannot undo certain story-driven physical changes. Treat the mirror as a customization tool, not a universal rollback for every transformation the campaign can cause.

Larian’s Patch 3 announcement lists explicit exclusions. Origin characters, hirelings and full illithids cannot use the mirror. The Dark Urge is not excluded and can use it after the game has begun. This distinction matters because “Origin character” is a broad label in the game, while the Dark Urge has specific support for the mirror.
If the mirror refuses to open for another party member, that may be an eligibility rule rather than a broken installation. Check whether the character is a hireling, an Origin companion or a full illithid before treating the behavior as a bug.
How to change the Dark Urge’s class or build
1. Find Withers
Use Withers’ respec service rather than the Magic Mirror. The class-change feature is a separate system and is accessed through Withers in camp.

2. Choose the respec option
Start Withers’ respec conversation and select the option that rebuilds the character. The official description presents this as a restart of the build from Level 1. The available conversation wording can vary with the game’s state, so focus on the respec service itself rather than expecting a particular line of dialogue.

Respec does not merely swap a class label on an otherwise finished character. It takes you back through the level-by-level build process. You can select a new class and make new starting choices, including proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips, as appropriate to the rebuilt character. This is why a respec can change how the Dark Urge functions in combat even when the story and cosmetic identity stay the same.
4. Complete the rebuild before leaving the service
Work through the level-up choices carefully and finish the confirmation flow. Review the resulting class, attributes, proficiencies, spells and cantrips before returning to play. The official material used for this feature does not publish a complete dialogue sequence or a fee, so do not rely on an online price claim as a universal value; inspect the current in-game prompt on your platform and difficulty setup.
What a respec changes—and what it does not
A respec changes the mechanical build. It is useful when you want the Dark Urge to fill a different party role, use a different spell list, or rebuild the character after learning how the campaign’s encounters work. Because the process starts at Level 1, it gives you the opportunity to revisit the foundational choices that determine later options rather than locking you into the original progression.
It does not change race, subrace, body type, voice, pronouns or other mirror settings. It also does not replace the Dark Urge origin with an ordinary custom character or remove the origin’s narrative content. Think of the result as the same protagonist with a different ruleset for combat and progression.

Dark Urge-specific behavior and patches
Patch 3: the mirror was introduced
Larian’s Patch 3 announcement, published September 22, 2023, introduced the Magic Mirror and described its repeatable use and restrictions. That announcement is the basis for treating the mirror as an officially supported feature rather than an unofficial workaround.
Patch 6: confirm edits before saving
Patch 6 documentation warns that unconfirmed character updates, including Magic Mirror edits, are not saved if you save before confirming them. This is a workflow rule: complete the edit, confirm it, then save.
Patch 7: a Dark Urge rename issue was fixed
Patch 7 notes record a fix for Dark Urge characters being renamed after using the Magic Mirror. The fix is useful context because it confirms that editing a Dark Urge in the mirror is an intended use case, not an unsupported exploit. If you encounter unexpected naming behavior on an unpatched installation, update the game and check the patch notes for your platform.

Use the Magic Mirror when the problem is presentation
Choose the mirror if you are unhappy with the character’s face, voice, pronouns or genitals, or if you simply want a different visual direction for a later act. You can revisit the editor repeatedly, so there is no need to treat a cosmetic revision as a one-time decision.
Use Withers when the problem is gameplay
Choose Withers when the Dark Urge’s class, attributes, proficiencies, spells, cantrips or overall combat role no longer suit your party. Because the rebuild starts from Level 1, plan time to make every level-up decision again instead of expecting a single class dropdown.

Use both when you want a complete redesign
A mechanical rebuild and a visual redesign do not conflict. You can respec with Withers and then visit the mirror, or reverse that order. Confirm mirror edits before saving, and separately complete the respec flow before returning to the campaign.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The mirror is unavailable: Verify that you are in camp and that the character is the Dark Urge. Origin companions, hirelings and full illithids are excluded by the documented rules.
- You cannot find a race, subrace or body-type control: Those fields are intentionally locked after character creation.
- Your appearance reverted after a save: Reopen the mirror and confirm the edit before saving again. Patch 6 specifically warns against saving while changes remain unconfirmed.
- Your class did not change: The Magic Mirror is not a respec tool. Speak with Withers and use his respec service, then complete the Level 1 rebuild.
- You expected the story to change: Neither system changes the Dark Urge origin. A respec changes the build, and the mirror changes supported presentation settings.
- A name changed unexpectedly after mirror use: Install the latest available patch. Larian’s Patch 7 notes identify a Dark Urge renaming issue that was fixed.
Practical planning before you commit
Make a manual save before a major rebuild if you want an easy fallback. For a mirror edit, keep the save separate from the in-progress editor session: confirm first, then save. For a respec, note the role you want the character to fill and the spells or proficiencies that role requires before starting, because the process asks you to reconstruct the build rather than merely toggle one setting.
Do not plan around an assumed respec price. The official passage describing Withers’ feature does not state a fee. Check the amount shown in your own game before confirming and decide whether the rebuild is worth that current cost.

Bottom line for a Dark Urge run
You can change a Dark Urge’s class and build through Withers, and you can repeatedly edit appearance, voice, pronouns and genitals at the Magic Mirror in camp. Race, subrace and body type stay fixed, and neither tool changes the Dark Urge origin or its story. Treat the mirror as a cosmetic editor, Withers as a Level 1 mechanical rebuild, and always confirm mirror changes before saving.
