To trigger Rose’s weapon-specific grapple attack, latch onto an enemy with the Vampire Killer and press the normal attack button while Rose is still being pulled toward the target. If you wait until the pull has finished, the game produces a regular midair attack instead. An advanced technique described by an unofficial guide, called “Pounce Cancel,” uses a directional dash during recovery after a downward whip strike to restore air options and continue into another strike or a trapeze swing. Konami has not published frame data or universal button mappings for either technique.
What “chaining” means in Belmont’s Curse
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse treats Rose’s Vampire Killer as both a traversal device and a weapon. Konami’s official game page describes the whip with the lines “Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist!” and “Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combat.” The same page classifies the game as a 2D Action-Exploration title and displays a 15-Oct-26 release date.
In practical terms, a “chained whip attack” is an input sequence rather than a confirmed infinite combo. You first use the whip to grapple an enemy, then add the normal attack input during the approach. That timing changes the attack into the current weapon’s grapple attack. The sources do not establish that Rose can repeat this indefinitely on one target, nor do they publish a guaranteed damage value or combo counter.

The starting long sword is described in an unofficial grapple guide as preserving momentum during the pull, which can let Rose continue across rooftops. That makes the technique useful for linking movement and offense, not merely for dealing a single hit.

How to trigger the grapple attack
- Choose a grapple target. Aim the Vampire Killer at a ring or an enemy. The guide’s procedure covers both kinds of target, although the attack variation is relevant when the target is an enemy.
- Fire the whip. The latch starts Rose’s movement toward the target. Do not release the sequence by waiting for the entire animation to finish.
- Press the normal attack button during the pull. The attack must be entered while Rose is flying toward the enemy, before the grapple impact has completed. This is the chained input that invokes the current weapon’s grapple attack.
- Watch the result. A successful input produces the weapon-specific grapple attack. If Rose instead performs an ordinary attack while airborne, the attack input was probably late, after the pull window had ended.
A Reddit discussion describes the same timing in player terms: “When you use the whip to pull yourself to an enemy and press attack during the grapple animation, that’s a whip attack.” That discussion also notes that pressing too late gives a normal midair attack. It is useful confirmation of the feel of the input, but it is anecdotal rather than an official control document.
Where the timing window is
The important visual cue is Rose’s travel toward the enemy. Pressing attack after the whip connects but before the grapple sequence finishes is the reliable target. You do not need to wait for Rose to arrive, and waiting is precisely what causes the ordinary midair attack described by players.

Button names can also differ by platform or controller layout; the documented instruction is “normal attack button,” not a specific face-button label.

“Pounce Cancel” is a separate, more advanced technique documented in a mid-game fan guide. The guide describes a downward whip strike followed, during its recovery, by a directional dash. According to that guide, the dash cancels the recovery, restores Rose’s air options, and allows a follow-up such as a second strike or a trapeze swing.

This is not the same input as the grapple attack. The grapple attack is entered during the approach to an enemy and changes the attack performed at the end of that movement. Pounce Cancel is entered after a downward strike and is intended to remove or shorten the recovery that would otherwise limit the next aerial action.
Basic Pounce Cancel sequence
- Perform a downward whip strike. Begin with the downward strike described by the fan guide.
- Enter a directional dash during recovery. The dash direction is part of the technique; the guide describes it as a directional input rather than a neutral action.
- Confirm the recovery has been interrupted. A successful cancel should restore the air options the guide associates with the technique.
- Choose the follow-up. Continue into another strike or a trapeze swing, depending on the position and the route you want.
The fan guide presents a tight input window and frame counts, but Konami has not confirmed those numbers. Use them as practice targets, not authoritative measurements. The existence of the described technique is supported by the guide; its exact frame timing and behavior on every platform remain unverified.
Grapple attack versus Pounce Cancel

Use the grapple attack when your question is “How do I make the whip pull end in a weapon attack?” Use Pounce Cancel when your question is “How do I preserve aerial movement after a downward strike?” They solve different problems and should be practiced separately.
A practical training routine
Drill 1: Isolate the grapple window
- Find an enemy that can be reached consistently with the whip.
- Repeat the grapple without attacking until you can recognize the beginning of Rose’s travel.
- Press the normal attack early in the approach, then gradually move the input later.
- Stop when the result changes from the grapple attack to a normal midair attack; that transition shows where your practical window ends.
This drill uses the game’s visible animation instead of an assumed frame count. It also helps separate an input-timing problem from a targeting problem: if the whip never latches, no attack timing can succeed.

Drill 2: Confirm the late-input failure
After producing a grapple attack, deliberately wait until Rose has completed the pull and then press attack. The expected outcome is a normal midair attack. Reproducing this failure is useful because it gives you a clear contrast between the two moves and prevents the common mistake of pressing only after arrival.
Drill 3: Learn Pounce Cancel independently
- Practice the downward whip strike without attempting a follow-up.
- Add the directional dash during recovery, using the fan guide’s timing as a provisional reference.
- Once the dash consistently interrupts recovery, add one follow-up at a time: first another strike, then a trapeze swing.
- Test the sequence near open space before using it over a hazardous gap. The technique is timing-sensitive, and a missed dash can leave Rose in the original recovery state.
Do not use success with the grapple attack as evidence that the Pounce Cancel timing is correct. The two windows occur in different parts of their animations.
Using the techniques in traversal and combat
The whip’s dual role is central to the game’s design. Konami explicitly presents it as a way to move “like a trapeze artist” and as a tool for pouncing on enemies. The grapple attack therefore fits routes where Rose needs to convert an approach into offense without abandoning momentum.

Pounce Cancel has a different tactical value. Its documented benefit is recovery management: restoring air options after a downward strike. That can open a second strike or a trapeze swing, but the fan guide does not establish damage, invulnerability, or guaranteed safety. Treat it as a mobility-and-continuation technique rather than assuming it is automatically the strongest damage option.

Rose performs a normal midair attack
The most likely cause is a late attack input. The grapple attack requires the normal attack while Rose is still traveling toward the enemy. Repeat the approach and press earlier in the pull.
The whip does not grapple the enemy
Check the initial aim and confirm that the whip actually latched before evaluating attack timing. The documented sequence begins with a successful grapple; an attack pressed without that state cannot become a grapple attack.

The downward strike finishes normally
For Pounce Cancel, the directional dash must be entered during recovery. A dash entered after recovery has ended cannot cancel that recovery. Because the guide’s frame counts are unofficial, use the animation and repeated attempts to find the window on your setup.

The controls do not match a guide
No universal button mapping is established in the cited material. Translate “normal attack button” and “directional dash” to your platform’s control scheme rather than copying a face-button label from another controller. The functional order of inputs matters more than the printed button name.

For the reliable weapon attack, grapple the enemy and press the normal attack button before Rose finishes traveling toward the target. A late press is only a regular midair attack. For advanced movement, try the unofficial Pounce Cancel: perform a downward whip strike, enter a directional dash during recovery, and use the restored air options for another strike or a trapeze swing. The first technique is the practical answer to chaining an attack into a grapple; the second is an experimental recovery-cancel route whose exact frames remain unverified.
