Yes. If your World of Warcraft access is on a recurring subscription, cancel it in Battle.net before the next renewal. Go to Games & Subscriptions, select Manage beside the correct WoW license, choose Cancel Subscription, and finish the prompts. You normally keep playing until the game time you already purchased expires. The Modern WoW free trial is different: it can be played through level 20 without a subscription, so trial-only access does not create a recurring subscription charge.

What “cancel before being charged” means

Canceling a World of Warcraft subscription stops the next automatic renewal. It does not delete your Battle.net account, erase characters, or remove game time that has already been paid for. Blizzard’s support instructions say the account remains playable until the current game time expires; after that, the account becomes inactive unless you add more time.

The timing matters. A cancellation must be completed before the renewal is processed. Blizzard’s published subscription terms describe recurring payments as automatic until you cancel the subscription or the account, but the available support wording does not promise a particular number of hours or days as a safe cutoff. Do not wait for the renewal date itself; cancel as soon as you know you do not want the next term.

“Cancel” also does not mean “close the account.” Closing an account is a separate, much more drastic action and should not be used as a way to reverse a payment. If a renewal has already entered payment processing, deleting a payment method or closing the account is not a reliable way to stop that transaction.

How to cancel a recurring WoW subscription in Battle.net

  1. Sign in to the correct Battle.net account. If you have more than one account or WoW license, verify the email address and the game account you actually use. Canceling a different license will not stop the subscription that is renewing.
  2. Open Games & Subscriptions. This is the account-management area where Blizzard lists active game licenses and subscription services.
  3. Find the World of Warcraft license. Look for the specific WoW account attached to the recurring plan rather than another Blizzard game or a separate WoW license.
  4. Click Manage. The management page shows the available actions for that subscription.
  5. Select Cancel Subscription. Follow every confirmation prompt until Battle.net reports that the cancellation is complete. Closing the page before the final confirmation can leave the renewal active.
  6. Save proof of the cancellation. Keep the confirmation email or take a screenshot showing the canceled status. Then check the subscription status and, if needed, your transaction history to verify that no future renewal is listed.

After a successful cancellation, the remaining paid game time should continue to work through its expiry date. The account then stops being active when that time runs out, unless you purchase more time or start another subscription.

If the Cancel Subscription button is missing

Blizzard’s support instructions identify two normal explanations: the account has no active subscription, or the subscription was already canceled. First confirm that you are signed in to the Battle.net account and WoW license that were charged or that you intended to cancel. If the account has only prepaid time, there may be no recurring plan to cancel.

Review the subscription status and transaction history rather than assuming that a missing button means a hidden renewal. If the status is unclear, contact Blizzard support with the account details and any recent transaction information. Do not create a second subscription while troubleshooting, because that can produce a separate renewal to cancel.

Trial, recurring subscription, and prepaid game time

These three forms of access behave differently. Identifying which one you have is the fastest way to answer whether a charge is coming.

Access type Payment and renewal behavior Playable content Is cancellation needed? Refund position
Modern WoW Free Trial No subscription is required for the trial; trial-only access does not create a recurring subscription charge. Modern WoW content through level 20. No recurring plan exists to cancel. The cited trial support information does not establish a subscription refund because there is no subscription charge for trial-only access.
Recurring subscription Renews automatically every month, three months, six months, or twelve months until canceled. World of Warcraft access associated with the active game time; Classic versions and selected modes may require game time or a subscription. Yes. Cancel in Battle.net before the next renewal. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, with a stated unused-subscription review window described below.
Prepaid game card or digital game time Non-recurring. The purchased time runs until it expires and does not renew automatically. Access covered by the purchased game time, subject to the version or mode requirements. No recurring cancellation is required. Apply Blizzard’s applicable digital-purchase and refund terms; the recurring-subscription cancellation process does not turn prepaid time into a recurring plan.

Blizzard’s current support description calls Modern WoW free to download and play through level 20. A separate modes description labels this limited access the World of Warcraft Free Trial. Classic versions and selected modes can require game time or a subscription, so reaching a mode-selection screen that asks for payment does not necessarily mean a recurring subscription has already been created.

What happens when you cancel today?

Your current game time remains available

Cancellation normally changes what happens at the end of the paid term, not what happens immediately. If you have 18 days of game time left, the account should remain playable during those 18 days. The cancellation prevents the next term from being purchased automatically; it does not shorten the term already bought.

The account becomes inactive at expiry

When the remaining game time expires, the account becomes inactive unless you add more time. Your characters and Battle.net account are not described as being erased by ordinary subscription cancellation. If you return later, you can add game time or begin a new subscription under the applicable account rules.

Cancellation is not a refund request

Stopping renewal and asking for money back are separate actions. Cancel first to prevent another renewal, then use Blizzard’s refund-review process if a charge has already happened and you believe an exception may apply.

If the renewal is pending or already charged

A pending payment

Contact Blizzard Billing Support promptly when a renewal is shown as pending or has just entered payment processing. A payment in progress may be difficult to stop, and canceling the subscription at that point may only prevent later renewals. Ask support to review the transaction, but do not assume that a pending status guarantees an automatic reversal.

A completed renewal

Blizzard states that World of Warcraft subscriptions are generally non-refundable. The support guidance nevertheless provides a refund-review feature for possible exceptions. Submit the review request with the transaction details, account information, and the date you canceled or noticed the charge. A review is not a promise that the payment will be returned.

The stated 14-day unused-subscription wording

Blizzard’s published refund wording says: “We’ll refund any unused World of Warcraft subscription within 14 days of the purchase.” The same wording says: “We won’t refund subscription time lost due to a suspension and/or permanent account closure.” Treat the 14-day statement as a policy condition, not as an automatic guarantee: the subscription must be unused, the request must fit the policy, and exclusions can apply.

Blizzard also says that for permanent closures and suspensions longer than 15 days, it will cancel upcoming recurring subscriptions. That cancellation of future renewals does not itself promise a refund for time already purchased or time lost during the suspension.

Why a charge can appear after you thought you canceled

  • The wrong Battle.net account was changed. A household can have multiple accounts or licenses, and each can have its own billing status.
  • The final confirmation was not completed. Reaching the cancellation screen is not the same as submitting the cancellation.
  • The renewal was already processing. A cancellation made after payment authorization may stop the following renewal but not the transaction already in motion.
  • The account used prepaid time instead. Prepaid game time is non-recurring, so its expiry and renewal behavior differs from a subscription.
  • A second subscription was started. Re-subscribing on another license or after troubleshooting can create a new recurring plan.

Use the subscription status and transaction history to distinguish these cases. A bank notification alone does not show which WoW license was billed or whether the charge is pending, completed, reversed, or duplicated.

How to verify that no future charge is scheduled

  1. Return to Battle.net’s Games & Subscriptions page.
  2. Open Manage for the same WoW license you canceled.
  3. Confirm that the page no longer offers an active recurring cancellation action or otherwise identifies the subscription as canceled.
  4. Check the displayed game-time expiry date so you know when access will end.
  5. Review transaction history for the cancellation or the most recent renewal, and retain the confirmation for your records.

If the status and transaction history disagree, contact support instead of relying on a bank statement or removing the payment method. Keep copies of the confirmation, support case number, and relevant dates.

Common questions about the WoW trial

Will the level-20 trial bill me later?

Not when you are using trial-only Modern WoW access. Blizzard describes the trial as playable through level 20 without a subscription. A charge would require a separate purchase or subscription action, so check Games & Subscriptions if you have ever added game time or subscribed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play Classic on the trial?

The cited support information distinguishes Modern WoW’s free trial from Classic versions and selected modes that require game time or a subscription. Trial access should therefore not be treated as a pass for every WoW version.

Does canceling remove access immediately?

No. For a recurring subscription, cancellation normally leaves the already purchased game time usable until its expiry. The account becomes inactive after that point unless additional time is added.

A safe decision checklist

  • Identify whether the account has a Modern WoW trial, a recurring subscription, or prepaid game time.
  • If it is recurring, cancel under the correct license in Games & Subscriptions before the renewal date.
  • Complete the final prompt and preserve confirmation.
  • Check the expiry date and transaction history.
  • If a payment is pending or posted, contact Billing Support promptly and submit the refund-review request where appropriate.
  • Do not close the account or delete a payment method expecting either action to reverse a completed charge.
