Yes—GMC sells replacement tailgates through GMC Parts, but whether a particular tailgate fits your Sierra depends on its year and configuration. Replacing a damaged tailgate is different from converting a truck to the MultiPro design: GMC’s parts listings do not establish that a MultiPro tailgate can be retrofitted to a truck built with another tailgate. Check fitment by VIN and confirm the complete parts and installation requirements before ordering.
Where to buy a replacement GMC tailgate
GMC Parts lists GM Genuine Parts tailgates for Sierra trucks. For example, its listing for part 85526195 covers Sierra 1500 model years 2019–2026 and Sierra 1500 Limited 2022. The listing describes it as a vehicle-specific original-equipment part, says it requires painting, and notes that the latch assembly is not included. Check the listing and its fitment details.
For Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Parts lists tailgate part 85518592 for model years 2020–2026. The HD catalog includes other tailgate part numbers, so do not treat this example as a universal fit for every HD truck. Review the HD tailgate listing and confirm the specific part against your vehicle.

GMC’s official accessories store also asks shoppers to select a vehicle to improve fit information and cautions that some parts may require additional equipment or services. Use the GMC Accessories vehicle selector where applicable, and confirm availability, shipping, and installation with the seller.

Will a MultiPro tailgate fit or upgrade your Sierra?
That depends on the exact truck, and the available catalog listings do not confirm a complete retrofit from a conventional tailgate to MultiPro. A replacement part listed for a given vehicle is not proof that it can add a different tailgate configuration, controls, or functions to a truck that did not come with them.
GMC’s 2023 Sierra HD brochure describes MultiPro as a six-function tailgate and says it is standard on all models except Sierra HD Pro. It also describes an available KICKER MultiPro Audio System accessory that integrates with the tailgate. GMC’s HD catalog separately lists wiring harness part 86803931 for Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD model years 2024–2026. That confirms a related component is sold separately; it does not show that the harness and a tailgate alone make a complete conversion kit. For a retrofit, ask a GMC dealer to assess your VIN and specify the assembly, wiring, controls, modules or other hardware, labor, and any warranty implications before you buy.
How to check whether a tailgate fits
- Identify the truck. Have the VIN, model year, Sierra 1500 or HD series, trim, and bed and cab configuration ready.
- Check the exact catalog application. Use the official fitment selector or ask a GMC parts department to confirm the part number against the VIN. Similar appearance or the same model-family name is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Confirm what the part includes. Ask whether the listing includes the latch assembly, wiring, mounting hardware, and any other components needed for your truck. For example, GMC’s 1500 listing for 85526195 says painting is required and the latch assembly is excluded.
- Get the installation details. Confirm paint, shipping, labor, and any additional equipment or services with the seller or installer. GMC’s accessories store notes that some items need additional equipment or services.
- For a MultiPro conversion, request a complete VIN-specific quote. Have the dealer confirm compatibility and itemize parts and labor rather than relying on a replacement-tailgate listing or the brochure’s feature description.
Can you remove and reinstall a GMC tailgate?
Yes. GMC Parts’ FAQ states: “Yes. Tailgates can be removed and reinstalled.” That answers whether removal and reinstallation are possible; it does not establish that a different tailgate configuration will fit your truck. See the GMC Parts tailgate FAQ.

GMC Parts also lists access-hole covers for specified Sierra HD years and recommends a dealer or independent service center for proper installation. Check the access-hole cover listing if that is the part you need.
