Yes—you can build Android APKs directly on an Android phone with Termux and an Ubuntu or Debian userland, without root or a PC. The dependable route is command-line development with the project’s Gradle wrapper, not running Android Studio as a desktop IDE. Whether a specific project builds depends in part on whether its Java, Gradle, Android SDK Build Tools, and any native-code dependencies work on the phone’s CPU architecture.
What does “full Android development on a phone” mean?
A phone-only workflow can cover editing source code, running a project’s build, producing an APK, signing a release, installing the app, and testing it on the intended device. Those are separate stages: a successful build means the toolchain created an APK, not that every app feature works correctly.
Termux provides the terminal environment. PRoot-Distro can run an Ubuntu or Debian userland inside it without root, a kernel module, or a Docker daemon. This is a Linux userland running on Android—not a separate Linux installation, virtual machine, or proof that every Linux desktop tool will work.
What do you need before you start?
- An Android phone with enough available storage and memory for the source tree, dependencies, and build tools. There is no universal device-spec threshold established for this workflow.
- Termux and, if you choose that route, a PRoot-Distro Linux distribution such as Ubuntu or Debian.
- The Android project’s source code and its Gradle wrapper. Use the versions and configuration specified by that project rather than guessing compatible Java, Gradle, or Android Gradle Plugin versions.
- The Android SDK components and other dependencies the project requires, plus a way to edit source files in the terminal or an Android-compatible editor.
- For projects with native-code or architecture-sensitive build steps, time to verify that the required tools actually run on the phone’s CPU architecture.
How do you build an APK from Termux?
- Choose the environment. You can try Termux’s native packages for a more direct terminal workflow, or use Termux with PRoot-Distro to run an Ubuntu or Debian userland. PRoot-Distro does not turn the phone into a conventional PC Linux host.
- Set up the project’s toolchain. Install the Java, Android SDK, Gradle-related dependencies, and any project-specific requirements. Follow the project’s Gradle wrapper and Android Gradle Plugin configuration for compatible versions.
- Check architecture-sensitive components. Confirm that the SDK Build Tools and other required executables, including AAPT2 when the project uses it, can run in your selected environment on the phone. Do not assume a tool distributed for x86_64 will run natively on ARM64.
- Run the debug build from the project root:
./gradlew assembleDebug. Android’s command-line build guidance uses the project’s Gradle wrapper, and this task produces a debug APK when the configured project builds successfully. - Locate and install the output. Look in the relevant module’s
build/outputs/apk/directory. The debug APK is signed for development use and can be installed on a device; the precise subdirectory depends on the project’s module and build variant. - Test the installed app on the target phone. Exercise the behavior that matters to your app. Build completion alone does not establish that device-specific features, permissions, or framework-dependent behavior work.
Why can an ARM64 phone build fail?
Android’s documented Gradle build process does not certify every Termux or PRoot setup on every phone. Community phone-build walkthroughs have reported that some Google-hosted SDK ZIPs contained x86_64 tools and required architecture-specific alternatives. Another project report described an AAPT2 mismatch involving Android 35/36 resources and a QEMU-based workaround in that project’s configuration. These are examples of project-specific compatibility problems, not universal fixes or promises that a given workaround will work for another app.

AAPT2 processes Android resources; getting it to run or produce output is not, by itself, the same as building a complete, signed, installable application. If the build fails, identify the failing task and tool first. A failure in resource processing, a native dependency, or a host executable calls for a different investigation than a Gradle version mismatch.
- Check whether the project’s required SDK tools support the phone’s architecture.
- Check the project’s configured Android Gradle Plugin, Gradle wrapper, and Java requirements together.
- Check whether the failure is caused by AAPT2, native code, or another architecture-specific dependency.
- Consider available storage, memory, and thermal headroom on the particular phone; the available evidence does not establish a universal performance benchmark.
How are debug and release APKs different?
A debug build is intended for development and local testing, and the Gradle debug task produces a debug-signed APK. Publishing a release is a distinct step: Android requires a release artifact to be signed with the developer’s private key. The command-line signing workflow uses tools such as zipalign and apksigner; verify the signature as part of the release process and keep the keystore and private key secure and backed up.

An Android App Bundle is a different distribution artifact, not an APK that can be installed directly as one. Choose the artifact and signing process required by your distribution channel.
Which phone-only approach should you choose?

What should you expect from phone-only development?
Phone-only development is most practical when the project’s toolchain supports the device architecture and the app can be edited, built, and tested with the available terminal workflow. A Bluetooth keyboard may make extended coding more comfortable, but it is optional and does not solve SDK compatibility. Check Android compatibility and connection requirements before choosing one.

Android’s official command-line guidance describes running project build tasks with the Gradle wrapper. That supports the command-line approach, but it should not be read as certification of every ARM64 Termux/PRoot combination. Treat each project as a compatibility check: get its configured toolchain working, build the needed artifact, sign it appropriately, and verify app behavior on the device.
