Yes—you can use a Raspberry Pi 5 as the base for a customizable HDMI media player, particularly for local media and general-purpose use. But its 4K-capable hardware does not make it a certified replacement for a Roku or Fire TV Stick, and official sources do not establish that major subscription apps will work on a DIY setup at particular resolutions. If streaming services and simple setup are your priority, a certified player or your TV’s built-in platform is the safer choice.

What a Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—replace

Raspberry Pi Ltd’s current Pi 5 specification lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, dual 4Kp60 HDMI output with HDR, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. Those capabilities make the board a plausible foundation for a custom media player. They describe hardware, however, not certification or guaranteed support for commercial streaming apps. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications

A DIY build makes the most sense if you want to customize a small computer, play local media, or experiment with software. It is a less certain choice if you expect the polished, low-maintenance experience of a conventional streaming stick: commercial services may depend on operating-system support, app availability, DRM, and the particular playback path. The official sources cited here do not establish that Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, or other major subscription apps work on a Pi setup at specified resolutions. Check the services you rely on before buying parts.

What you need for a Pi-based media player

The board alone is not a complete TV-ready build. Plan for the connection, power, storage, operating system, and cooling appropriate to your use.

  • Raspberry Pi 5: The board provides the computing and video hardware. Its official product specification describes the 4K output and HEVC decoding.
  • USB-C power supply: Raspberry Pi Ltd recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply. The recommendation is from the manufacturer, not an independent power test. Raspberry Pi 5 product page
  • Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter: Pi 5 uses micro-HDMI, while a standard TV HDMI input requires a compatible HDMI connection. Raspberry Pi computer documentation
  • Storage and software: The board has a microSD slot. Select storage for the operating system and media software you intend to use; the right choice depends on that software and your media library.
  • Case and cooling plan: Raspberry Pi Ltd says the Pi 5 “will perform best with active cooling.” Consider cooling suited to the workload and enclosure, especially if the player will handle sustained use. Raspberry Pi 5 product page

These are build considerations, not a tested parts recipe. Total cost depends on the board, accessories, storage, and enclosure you choose; the available evidence does not establish that a DIY build costs less than a ready-made streamer.

DIY player or ready-made streaming stick?

The choice is less about which device has the biggest number on its specification sheet and more about what you need it to do. A Pi offers a general-purpose computer to configure; a certified streamer is designed to get supported apps running with fewer setup decisions.

What matters Raspberry Pi 5 build Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Setup Choose storage and software, connect micro-HDMI, and provide appropriate power; setup and upkeep depend on your software choices. Roku’s setup path connects the stick to HDMI and installs updates.
Commercial streaming apps and DRM Support at particular resolutions is not established by the cited official sources; verify each service and playback path before buying. A ready-made Roku streaming device is the more straightforward route when supported streaming apps are the priority.
Local media and customization General-purpose hardware makes this a plausible option for a customizable local-media player; exact features depend on the software selected. Designed as a streaming device rather than a general-purpose computer.
Picture formats Pi 5 specifications list dual 4Kp60 HDMI output with HDR and 4Kp60 HEVC decoding. These specifications do not guarantee streaming-app playback at 4K. Roku’s current support page lists 720p HD, 1080p Full HD, 4K UHD, and HDR support for the Streaming Stick 4K.
Remote and TV-control convenience Depends on the accessories and software in your build; the cited Pi specifications do not establish a turnkey streaming-stick remote experience. Roku documents a device-specific setup experience; consult its current product and setup information for included features.
Total cost Depends on the board and selected accessories; a current complete-build total is not established. Current price is not established here.

Roku’s setup instructions and Streaming Stick 4K format listing provide a concrete reference for the turnkey route. They do not establish identical performance or service support across all regions, apps, or televisions. Roku Streaming Stick setup · Roku Streaming Stick 4K supported formats

How to decide before buying parts

  1. List the services you must have. Look for current, official support information for those services on the operating system and software you plan to use. Do not infer app or DRM support from the Pi’s 4K hardware specification.
  2. Decide whether local media or mainstream streaming is the main job. A Pi is a credible project base when flexibility and local-media use matter most. For supported apps with minimal setup, favor a certified streamer or the TV’s built-in platform.
  3. Account for every build component. Include a suitable USB-C supply, micro-HDMI connection, microSD storage, operating system, and an appropriate case or cooling solution. Check compatibility with the software you choose.
  4. Compare the finished experience, not only the board. Consider setup, ongoing maintenance, app and DRM support, picture formats, and the remote or TV controls you need. No like-for-like test or complete-build price is established here, so neither lower cost nor better performance can be assumed.

What 4K specifications mean in practice

The Pi 5’s dual 4Kp60 HDMI output and 4Kp60 HEVC decoder are useful hardware capabilities. They do not prove that a subscription app will authorize playback, offer a 4K stream on the chosen operating system, or deliver it through a compatible DRM path. Treat resolution claims for the board and support claims for an app as separate questions; confirm the latter for your exact setup before committing.
