Yes—but only if you already own the display. A $150 budget can make an existing television more useful by adding better dialogue, streaming, or both. It is not a dependable budget for a complete system that includes a screen, audio, content source, and all required cables or accessories. The most practical result is an upgrade to movie night, not a reference-quality cinema.
What “under $150” can realistically buy
A home theater is a system, not a single product. At minimum, you need a display, a way to play content, and audio. Depending on the room, you may also need a screen, mounts or stands, cables, a network connection, and a way to control the equipment. When none of those components is already available, a $150 ceiling leaves too little room for a dependable combination.
The budget becomes workable when it is treated as an upgrade budget. If your television already works, one compact device can address two common problems at once: weak built-in sound and outdated streaming software. If your television is fine but audio is the issue, existing speakers or headphones may let you direct the money toward that one bottleneck. If you want a dramatically larger picture, a projector may be possible only when the room, screen surface, audio, and playback source are already handled.
- Existing TV: The strongest under-$150 case is a streaming soundbar that improves dialogue and adds current streaming access.
- Existing display and audio: Spend on the one missing connection or source device rather than replacing working components.
- Starting from zero: A complete, dependable setup is not established at this price.
- Large-image priority: A projector can create a large picture, but the projector alone is not a complete theater.
The first decision: what equipment do you already own?
Before comparing products, write down what is already usable. This prevents the common mistake of spending nearly the entire budget on a projector or soundbar and discovering that the remaining system still lacks a source, suitable audio, or a workable place to display the image.

Inventory checklist
- A television or other display that turns on and has a usable input.
- Existing speakers, a soundbar, an AV receiver, powered speakers, or headphones.
- A streaming device, game console, Blu-ray player, computer, or other content source.
- Available power outlets and the cables needed to connect the equipment.
- A room where screen size, seating distance, darkness, and speaker placement are acceptable.
Mark the first item that is genuinely preventing you from watching comfortably. If the TV picture is acceptable but voices are hard to understand, audio is the bottleneck. If the TV has no convenient streaming apps, content access is the bottleneck. If the display itself is broken or too small for the room, $150 is unlikely to solve the whole problem; you may need to reuse or buy used equipment and accept more risk.
The best-supported path: add a compact soundbar and streamer to an existing TV
The clearest example of a useful under-$150 upgrade is Roku Streambar SE. Roku describes it as a compact soundbar with a 4K streaming player built in, enhanced speech clarity, and a Bluetooth headphone mode. Its product page showed a limited-time price of $99.99, reduced from $149.99 when checked. That is a manufacturer offer observed at one point, not a permanent market price; availability and price can change before you buy.
This type of device is valuable because it combines two purchases. A television that still displays a good picture can gain a newer streaming interface while its built-in speakers are replaced by a forward-facing bar designed to make dialogue easier to follow. The Bluetooth headphone mode can also let one person listen privately without raising the room volume, subject to the device and headphones working together as expected.

What this path solves
- Streaming access when the TV’s built-in platform is slow, outdated, or missing services.
- Clearer dialogue than many thin television speakers provide.
- A single compact audio device instead of a receiver, multiple speakers, and a subwoofer.
- A relatively simple installation for a household that already has a working TV and network access.
What it does not solve
- It does not provide a new display. The quality and size of your existing TV still determine the picture.
- A compact bar is not the same as a separate surround system with independently placed rear speakers.
- It does not guarantee cinema-level bass or the enveloping effect of a larger system.
- The observed $99.99 offer may expire, and a higher price leaves less room for tax, shipping, or replacement cables.
For a reader who already owns a working TV, this is the most defensible interpretation of “build a home theater under $150”: improve the two functions most likely to frustrate everyday viewing without pretending to create a full theater from scratch.
How to plan the purchase without wasting the budget
- Set the system boundary. Decide whether the $150 includes tax and delivery, or whether those costs are outside the limit. A product listed below the ceiling can exceed it at checkout.
- Identify one primary failure. Choose picture size, dialogue, streaming access, or headphone listening. Do not try to fix every weakness at once.
- Confirm compatibility before ordering. Check the TV’s available audio and video connections, wireless-network access, power location, and the source devices you intend to use.
- Reserve money for missing essentials. Keep part of the budget available for a cable, adapter, extension lead, stand, or replacement remote if your current setup requires one.
- Measure the room. For a soundbar, verify that the bar can sit in front of the TV without blocking the screen or remote sensor. For a projector, measure throw distance, wall width, and the distance to a power outlet.
- Test the existing equipment first. Confirm that the TV displays content and that your network and streaming accounts work before replacing anything. This identifies whether the new purchase is an upgrade or an attempt to compensate for a separate failure.
Why a projector is not a complete $150 theater
A projector can appear to be the shortcut to a theater because it may produce a much larger image than a television. Dolby’s home-theater guidance describes projectors as one display option and says that a rich, immersive experience generally requires connecting the projector to a soundbar or to an AV receiver and speakers. In other words, the projector addresses only the display portion of the system.
Dolby also describes a good home-theater projector as commonly producing images between 100 and 150 inches. That general description does not certify that a particular low-cost projector can deliver a bright, sharp, properly resolved image at those sizes. The room’s ambient light, the wall or screen surface, placement, focus, and the source device all affect the result.

- [TV-Like Simplicity] — A TV Experience, Reimagined for the Big Screen Powered by VIDAA, a platform built with TV viewing at its core, this smart projector brings familiar TV-like ease to the freedom of projection. The clean, responsive interface keeps menus simple and distractions minimal, so movie night feels less like operating a device and more like turning on your TV. Compact enough for a bedroom or ceiling setup, yet ready to turn everyday spaces into a big-screen home theater.
- [Complete TV Content] — 1,200+ Apps, 1,000+ Live Channels, One Screen This is more than Netflix built into a projector—it’s a complete TV content experience. Explore 1,200+ apps including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Pluto TV, Plex, Tubi, DAZN and peacock, plus 1,000+ Live TV channels spanning movies, shows, news, sports, education and kids’ entertainment. Smart Search and Voice Control help cut through endless browsing—ask for Sunday football, find the kids a show, or settle into movie night, all from one screen.
- [Brighter, More Detailed Picture] — High-brightness, HDR10, Native 1080P & MEMC Great picture quality lives in the little things—the stitching on a football jersey, sunlight breaking through clouds, or details hiding in the shadows of a night scene. High brightness keeps the picture vivid for everyday viewing, while HDR10 enhances contrast and detail. Native 1080P delivers crisp Full HD, 4K decoding handles high-resolution content, and MEMC keeps fast sports and action scenes looking smoother. A 4K projector experience built for more than movie night.
- [Certified AirPlay & Dolby Audio] — Share It Bigger. Hear It Better. A big screen should feel effortless and sound just as immersive. AirPlay lets you share compatible content from Apple devices onto the big screen—perfect for vacation photos, family videos or a spontaneous movie night. Dolby Audio adds fuller, room-filling sound without immediately reaching for extra speakers, while noise as low as 28 dB keeps the projector from competing with quiet dialogue. A Bluetooth projector made for both watching together and winding down.
- [Auto Setup, Easy Viewing] — Move the Projector, Not Your Plans Your screen shouldn’t be tied to one room. Auto Focus quickly brings the picture into clarity, while Keystone Correction helps straighten the image with less manual adjustment. Move this portable projector from the living room to a projector for bedroom viewing, aim it toward the ceiling, or take your outdoor projector into the backyard for movie night. With WiFi and Bluetooth built in, big-screen entertainment can follow wherever the night takes you.
Projector costs beyond the projector
- Audio: Built-in projector speakers may be minimal. Dolby specifically notes that richer sound usually requires a soundbar or an AV receiver and speakers.
- Screen or surface: A bare wall may have texture, color, windows, or furniture that reduces perceived quality. A screen can be another purchase or installation problem.
- Source: Streaming services need a compatible source and, in many cases, network access. The projector may not include that source.
- Light control: Daylight and room lighting can wash out a budget projector’s image, even when the advertised diagonal size sounds impressive.
- Placement: Throw distance, keystone correction, focus, ventilation, and a stable surface determine whether the projected image is usable.
Therefore, a projector is a reasonable experiment when you already have a source, audio, a suitable wall or screen, and a room that can be darkened. It is not evidence that a complete start-from-zero theater costs $150.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBe careful with “150” projector product names
Naxa lists a product named the “150” Home Theater LCD Projector Combo and gives external streaming devices as examples of devices that can connect. The same listing says those devices are not included. The number in the product name is not proof that the image is theater quality, that the projector produces a 150-inch picture, or that a complete system costs $150.
Read the specification and inclusion list literally. Confirm the actual resolution, brightness description, inputs, included remote and cables, and whether the content source is supplied. If those details are unclear, treat the product as a basic display device with uncertainty around performance, not as a guaranteed all-in-one theater.

Three realistic budget paths
| Path | Best when | What it can solve | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact soundbar with streaming for an existing TV | The TV works and dialogue or outdated streaming is the main complaint | Combines streaming access and improved TV audio in one device | No new display and no separate surround-speaker array; price and stock can change |
| Reuse existing speakers or headphones | The display and content source are already handled | Lets the budget target one audio weakness or private listening | Compatibility and setup depend entirely on equipment you already own |
| Use a projector with existing room resources | A large image matters and you already have a source, audio, and suitable surface | Potentially creates a much larger picture than a TV | Light, placement, image quality, screen needs, and external audio remain your responsibility |
| Buy a low-cost projector combo | You accept uncertainty and verify the actual specifications before purchase | May place a basic display device in one box | Product naming and claimed size do not establish quality; source devices may be excluded |
Step-by-step setup for the soundbar/streamer route
- Place the bar. Put it in front of the existing TV or on a stable shelf where it does not obstruct the picture or the television’s controls.
- Connect power and the TV link. Use the connection and cable specified in the device’s current setup instructions. If the TV offers more than one compatible audio path, choose the one supported by both devices rather than assuming every port behaves the same way.
- Complete network setup. Follow the on-screen process to connect the streaming player to your home network and sign in to the services you already use.
- Set speech and volume behavior. Play a dialogue-heavy scene and adjust the soundbar and TV so that only one device is controlling volume when possible. This reduces confusing volume jumps.
- Test private listening. Pair compatible Bluetooth headphones and confirm that audio switches as expected. Keep the TV remote available in case headphone volume is controlled separately.
- Check everyday use. Test live TV or another source, streaming playback, pausing, waking the system, and returning to TV audio. Discovering a control or compatibility problem during the return window is better than finding it on movie night.
Step-by-step checks before choosing a projector
- Darken the intended viewing period. Close curtains or turn off lights and see whether the planned wall or screen remains usable. Do this before buying hardware.
- Choose the image location. Measure the wall or screen area and mark the projector position. Make sure viewers will not walk through the beam and that ventilation openings will remain clear.
- Verify the source separately. Confirm that your streaming stick, console, computer, or player has a compatible output and that its cable reaches the projector.
- Plan audio. Decide whether existing speakers, headphones, a soundbar, or an AV receiver can accept the audio signal. A projector’s built-in speakers may not provide the immersive result you want.
- Check adjustment limits. Determine how much focus, image correction, and placement flexibility the model provides. A projector that cannot be positioned where your room requires may be unusable despite its advertised screen size.
- Evaluate the complete price. Add any screen, audio connection, mounting or stand, cable, and source-device costs before calling the setup “under $150.”
The compromises you should expect
Picture quality
At this budget, the most dependable picture is usually the one you already own. A low-cost projector may offer a large image while sacrificing brightness, sharpness, color consistency, or ease of placement. A large diagonal measurement says nothing by itself about how the image looks in your room.
Sound and bass
An inexpensive compact bar can improve intelligibility, but it does not create the headroom and low-frequency impact of a larger system with a dedicated subwoofer. Built-in projector speakers are an even weaker basis for an immersive setup, which is why Dolby recommends adding a soundbar or receiver and speakers for a richer experience.
Surround immersion
A single bar or a pair of reused speakers can make TV audio clearer, yet neither should be described as a full surround array. True room-filling effects require speaker placement and compatible processing that a one-box upgrade does not supply.
Best Value
- HOME THEATER PROJECTOR — Bring your entertainment experience to the next level; With detailed 1080p images and fast data processing, the Epson Home Cinema projector is optimized for fast-action sports and more; Also an exciting casual gaming projector
- ULTRA BRIGHT IMAGES — 4,000 Lumens of Color Brightness (IDMS rated) and 4,000 Lumens of White Brightness (ISO Rated)¹; Wall projector for tv and movies delivers clear and crisp images in a variety of lighting conditions
- VIVID AND PRECISE COLOR — Advanced 3LCD technology displays 100% of RGB color signal for every frame, providing precision color accuracy while maintaining vivid color brightness, without distracting "rainbowing" or "color brightness" issues
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Streaming projector features two HDMI ports and a USB port that functions as a power source for streaming devices²; Connect laptops and devices, including Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast; Seamless video conferencing
- QUICK AND SIMPLE SETUP — The built-in speaker means you can start using this projector immediately; Easy setup for video and audio right out of the box; Portable projector with speaker can also be easily repositioned
Convenience and longevity
An all-in-one device reduces boxes and setup steps, but it also concentrates more functions in one product. If its streaming platform or hardware eventually becomes outdated, the audio and streaming functions may need to be replaced together. A modular receiver-and-speaker system is more expandable, but it is not realistic to assemble new components within this budget.
Financial certainty
The observed Streambar SE price was a limited-time offer. A temporary discount can make an upgrade fit the ceiling today and fail to fit it later. Shipping, tax, required cables, and accessories can also change the final total. Treat the advertised price as a snapshot, not a promise.
Quick Recap
A practical decision framework
Use these questions in order:
- Do you already have a working TV? If no, stop treating $150 as a complete-system budget and look for a staged or used-equipment plan.
- Is dialogue or streaming the main problem? Choose the compact soundbar/streamer category and verify the current price before checkout.
- Do you already have suitable speakers and a content source? If yes, a projector may be viable as a display experiment, provided the room and screen surface cooperate.
- Would you need to buy audio, a screen, and a source as well? If yes, the total system is not substantiated at $150; postpone, reuse more equipment, or increase the budget.
- Are you judging only by screen size or product name? Recheck real specifications, included equipment, and room conditions before deciding.
Bottom line for different starting points
- TV already owned: Yes, $150 can produce a meaningful improvement. A compact streaming soundbar is the most coherent use of the money, with the observed Roku Streambar SE offer illustrating the category.
- Display and audio already owned: Possibly. Direct the budget to the missing source or connection, and confirm compatibility before purchasing.
- Only a wall and a desire for a big image: A projector may create a picture, but it will not automatically create a theater. Audio, source, light control, placement, and screen quality still determine the experience.
- Starting from nothing: Do not expect a dependable, complete home theater for under $150. The honest compromise is a staged build, reused equipment, or a higher total budget.
