No ordinary adapter can install a new, working USB data port in your TV. A USB hub can split an existing port into more connections, but only if your exact TV model supports hubs. If your goal is playing local files, connect compatible storage directly to a TV USB port. If you want streaming apps, use an HDMI streaming device instead.
What “adding a USB port” can mean
A TV’s USB sockets are built into its hardware. A hub does not create another port on the television; it connects several devices through one existing port. Whether the TV can recognize devices through that hub depends on the model and its documentation.
That distinction matters because the right option depends on your goal:

- Play photos, music, or video files: Try a supported USB storage device directly in an existing TV port.
- Use streaming apps: Check the TV’s built-in apps or connect a streaming player by HDMI.
Can your TV use a USB hub?
There is no universal answer. Sony’s cited BRAVIA guidance says USB devices connected through a hub are unsupported and advises connecting devices directly. In contrast, the Panasonic TX-55JXW604 manual allows hubs on its USB inputs and recommends an externally powered hub. Those examples show why one manufacturer’s guidance cannot establish compatibility for another TV.

Find the exact model number on the TV’s label or in its settings, then consult that model’s manual or support page. Check whether the USB port is intended for the device you want to connect, whether hubs are allowed, and what power or USB specifications apply. If the manual forbids hubs, do not use one. If it does not mention them, compatibility is not established; a hub is not guaranteed to work.

To play files, connect USB storage directly
If you want to view local photos or videos or listen to music, start with a flash drive or other storage device connected directly to an existing TV USB port. Then open the TV’s media browser or USB input. Exact menu names and supported content vary by model.

- Check the TV manual for supported storage devices, file systems, capacity, media formats, and power requirements.
- Connect the drive directly to the TV’s USB port.
- Open the TV’s media, home, or input menu and select the USB device if it appears.
- Choose a supported file to play. If a file is missing or will not play, check its format and codec against the TV’s guide.
Manufacturer limits are not universal specifications. For example, LG’s USB-storage instructions give capacity and power guidance for the LG TVs covered by that page and note that supported extensions and codecs vary by model. Sony’s USB playback guide likewise describes browsing USB media while noting that file support can vary.

For streaming apps, use HDMI—not a USB hub
A USB hub does not add streaming apps to a TV. If the TV does not offer the app you need, a compatible streaming player connected to HDMI is the relevant alternative. Follow the player’s setup instructions for its HDMI connection and power source.
Do not assume the TV’s USB port can power a streaming player. Roku says some TV USB ports do not provide enough power and advises using the supplied wall adapter if necessary. Its setup instructions explain the connection and power options.

Why a streaming device’s USB-C hub instructions do not apply to TVs generally
Google documents a USB-C hub procedure for moving files to and from specified Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer devices. That procedure calls for a compatible USB-C hub with power delivery and a USB-C charger above 1.5 A / 7.5 W, and Google warns that it is not guaranteed to work in every setup. It is a device-specific file-transfer method—not a general way to add USB ports to a television. See Google’s instructions before attempting that procedure with one of the listed devices.
