CAN XL expands the CAN data-link layer with data fields up to 2048 bytes, a listed data-phase ceiling of 20 Mbit/s, and fields that separate message priority from acceptance filtering. For robots, HMIs, and industrial machines, that creates options for larger-message backbone or sub-backbone networks; it does not mean existing equipment supports CAN XL or that every application will run faster.

What changes between CAN CC, CAN FD, and CAN XL?

CAN XL is the third generation of the CAN data-link layer. It retains CAN’s arbitration approach while increasing the maximum data-field size and the listed data-phase bit-rate ceiling. The figures below are ceilings in CAN in Automation’s (CiA) August 2026 comparison, not measurements of application throughput.

CAN generation Maximum data field Listed maximum bit rate Source and qualification
CAN CC 8 bytes 1 Mbit/s CiA, August 2026; listed limits, not guaranteed application performance.
CAN FD 64 bytes 8 Mbit/s CiA, August 2026; listed limits, not guaranteed application performance.
CAN XL 2048 bytes 20 Mbit/s CiA, August 2026; the physical network and hardware constrain the achievable rate.

Those larger data fields can reduce the need to split a large higher-layer message across many frames. Whether that improves efficiency depends on actual message sizes, scheduling, and network configuration. Similarly, the 20 Mbit/s figure is a protocol-family ceiling, not a promise of end-to-end throughput. CAN XL changes bit timing and transceiver mode for its data phase, and CiA says rates of 20 Mbit/s and beyond require CAN SIC XL transceivers. See CiA’s CAN XL overview.

How CAN XL handles priority, filtering, and higher-layer protocols

CAN XL uses an 11-bit priority ID and a separate 32-bit acceptance field. The priority ID determines frame priority; the acceptance field is used by the controller’s acceptance filter and can carry node-address or content-indicating information. Separating those jobs gives network designers more flexibility than relying on one identifier for both roles. CiA summarizes these fields in its CAN data-link overview.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CAN XL also adds a service data type (SDT) and virtual CAN identifier (VCID) for higher-layer protocol configuration and identification. CiA’s CAN XL overview describes Ethernet frames embedded in CAN XL frames and positions the technology for easier integration into TCP/IP systems. The organization’s document catalog also lists a multi-PDU protocol for mapping messages compliant with different higher-layer protocols into one CAN XL frame.

CiA describes two CRC fields and a mechanism intended to prevent a long frame from blocking the network, so higher-priority control information can get through while the long frame’s integrity is retained. This feature does not remove the need to analyze latency and schedulability for the specific traffic mix and topology; the network still needs to meet its control deadlines.

What CAN XL could mean for industrial robots and machines

CiA identifies CANopen networks in varied industrial applications, including robots and printing machines. That establishes an industrial context for CAN-family networking, but it does not document a particular robot or machine using CAN XL. The implications below are design possibilities derived from CAN XL’s features, not reported deployment results.

For a robot or machine backbone

A CAN XL backbone or sub-backbone could carry traffic whose size is awkward to handle as many small legacy CAN frames, while retaining CAN’s priority-based arbitration for traffic that needs timely access. Designers would need to decide which traffic belongs on CAN XL, define deadlines and topology, and determine how older CAN CC or CAN FD nodes connect—if at all—through compatible interfaces or gateways.

For an HMI

Larger configuration, diagnostic, or service messages exchanged between an HMI and a machine network are plausible uses for larger CAN XL data fields. The cited material does not quantify HMI performance or confirm CAN XL support in any HMI product. A higher maximum bus rate alone is not evidence that an operator interface will feel faster; the full path, including software and message handling, matters.

Can CAN XL work with CAN FD?

Do not assume that a CAN FD device can communicate directly with CAN XL just because both belong to the CAN family. CiA’s material establishes CAN XL frame formats for CAN XL nodes, not universal plug-and-play compatibility with legacy devices. For a mixed network, verify the exact controller, transceiver, protocol stack, and any gateway or interface needed to connect the generations. A legacy CAN FD adapter should not be treated as CAN XL-capable without model-specific confirmation.

What to verify before planning a CAN XL migration

Start with the network role rather than the headline bit rate. CAN XL is positioned for backbone and sub-backbone networks, so first establish whether that role solves a real traffic or integration problem in the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define traffic and deadlines. Identify the message sizes, priorities, and timing requirements the proposed CAN XL segment must carry. Analyze scheduling and latency for the expected traffic mix rather than assuming the maximum data rate guarantees deterministic behavior.
  2. Map the network boundary. Decide which nodes will use CAN XL and how existing CAN CC or CAN FD equipment will be isolated, connected, or replaced. Specify any gateways and the protocols they must translate.
  3. Check hardware and timing. Confirm CAN XL support in the controller and transceiver, including the required data-phase timing and transceiver mode. CiA says CAN SIC XL transceivers are required for 20 Mbit/s and beyond; the physical network design also affects the achievable rate.
  4. Confirm higher-layer support. Check that the required stack and configuration handle SDT, VCID, and any intended Ethernet or other higher-layer encapsulation. A frame format alone does not supply an application protocol or gateway.
  5. Validate interoperability and conformance. Test the complete configuration with the intended nodes, topology, and traffic. CiA’s published CAN XL documents include specification and test-plan material; check the current revisions for the implementation in question.

When CAN XL is—and is not—a sensible fit

  • Consider it when a machine-network backbone needs larger data fields, has a reason to carry higher-layer or TCP/IP-related traffic, and can support the required CAN XL hardware and software.
  • Keep the limits in view when evaluating real-time behavior: the listed maximum rate is not guaranteed throughput, and long-frame handling does not replace system-level latency analysis.
  • Do not assume an upgrade when the benefit depends on existing robots, HMIs, controllers, or adapters already supporting CAN XL. Confirm each device and the integration path before designing around it.

For current technical descriptions and figures, consult CiA’s CAN XL overview, its document catalog, and the August 2026 brochure. CAN XL document revisions and hardware availability can change, so check the versions relevant to a specific implementation.
