Yes. Windows XP has a Microsoft Windows Portable Devices (WPD) and Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) driver path, but that does not mean every phone will connect or every transfer app will work. Compatibility depends on the device’s protocol and mode, the installed driver stack, and the application you use.
What MTP support means on Windows XP
MTP support existed in the Windows XP era. Microsoft’s MTP driver documentation describes XP-era setup components, including WPDUSB.sys, and distinguishes driver setup for Windows Media Player 10 from setup for Windows Media Player 11 and newer Windows versions.
Microsoft describes WPD as the preferred way for applications to access portable media devices in Windows XP and later. But a device appearing in Windows is not the same as every application being able to use all its features. Microsoft notes that older Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and Windows Media Device Manager (WMDM) applications can use compatibility layers, but may expose fewer capabilities than applications built on WPD for newer MTP-based devices. See Microsoft’s WPD overview.

XP’s historical MTP support alone cannot establish compatibility with a particular phone, especially a modern one. The device must present a protocol and connection mode XP’s driver and software can handle, and the device maker’s implementation matters. Microsoft describes portable devices as implementing class protocols such as MTP; it also recommends PTP backward compatibility for camera makers using MTP for compatibility reasons. That is not a guarantee that any specific phone offers a usable PTP mode or works with XP.

- Task and application: Simple file browsing, importing photos, and media-library synchronization may rely on different software capabilities.
What the Windows Media Player versions tell you
Windows Media Player 10 is an important historical marker, not a universal compatibility fix. Microsoft announced WMP 10 for Windows XP on September 2, 2004. The announcement said the player incorporated MTP to transfer songs, videos, and pictures, and claimed support for more than 70 portable devices at the time. Those were claims about the 2004 release, not a current count or a compatibility list for today’s phones. Read the Microsoft announcement.
Microsoft’s driver setup documentation explains why old instructions can differ: XP-era registration and services include WPDUSB.sys, while the co-installer and WDF setup sections were not required for an MTP driver supporting Windows Media Player 10. The documented distinctions do not mean installing WMP 10—or another player version—will make an unsupported device work.

How to troubleshoot an XP-to-device connection
- Confirm the device mode. On the device, select MTP or a compatible PTP mode if it offers one. The available modes and their names are device-specific.
- Check the cable. Use a USB data-transfer cable that fits the device. A charge-only cable cannot transfer files; a data cable cannot fix a missing driver or unsupported protocol.
- Establish the driver path. Check whether XP has the relevant Microsoft MTP/WPD components or a driver supplied for that device. The Microsoft documentation describes XP-era setup, but does not provide a compatibility list for particular modern devices.
- Match the app to the task. For media synchronization, an XP-era WMP setup may be relevant. For photo import or file access, results can differ depending on whether the application uses WPD directly or an older WIA/WMDM compatibility path.
- Separate recognition from function. If the device appears but an app cannot browse, import, or sync as expected, the app may not support the capability exposed by the device. Microsoft explicitly warns that legacy applications may offer fewer capabilities than WPD applications.
MTP over USB is not Windows Media Connect
Windows Media Connect 2.0 is a different technology. Microsoft described it as delivering media from an XP computer over a home network to UPnP devices such as digital audio receivers and connected DVD players; its release history lists October 10, 2005. It is not the USB MTP path for copying files to a phone. Microsoft’s Windows Media Connect 2.0 information lists Windows XP SP2 editions among its minimum requirements.

Bottom line for XP users
Windows XP can support MTP through its WPD and driver stack, but compatibility is conditional on the device, driver setup, connection mode, and application. Treat XP support as evidence that the platform had an MTP path—not as proof that a particular current phone will connect. Microsoft’s documentation establishes the historical framework and setup context; it does not establish compatibility for individual modern phones, XP service-pack configurations, USB controllers, or third-party driver combinations.
