Yes. Windows 11’s listed minimum is 4 GB of memory, so 8 GB clears the memory requirement. That does not guarantee a fast experience, or prove the whole PC is compatible: the processor, storage, firmware, TPM, graphics and display requirements matter too. Whether 8 GB feels comfortable depends on the computer and the work you do.
What does 8 GB mean for Windows 11 eligibility?
Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater memory as the Windows 11 minimum. Eight GB is above that threshold, but memory is only one part of the system requirements.
A compatible PC also needs a supported 64-bit processor with at least two cores, at least 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display at least 9 inches diagonally with 720p resolution. Windows 11 Home setup also requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account.
Microsoft’s download page identifies version 26H2 as the “2026 Update.” It also warns that installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues. Check the current Windows 11 download and installation guidance before upgrading, since release information can change.

Will 8 GB feel fast enough?
The minimum requirement is an eligibility threshold, not a performance guarantee. Microsoft says requirements for particular apps, features and hardware can exceed the general Windows minimum. It separately says, “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term.” That recommendation does not promise that every 8 GB computer will feel smooth in every workload.
Your experience depends on the PC’s overall configuration and what you run. Microsoft notes that many open apps or browser tabs can slow performance. Everyday use that suits a particular 8 GB PC may be fine; heavier or more demanding use can produce a different result. There is no universal conclusion that every 8 GB system will stutter, or that it cannot multitask.

How to tell whether memory is the problem
If the computer feels slow, check resource use before concluding that RAM is the cause. Microsoft recommends looking at CPU, memory and disk activity when troubleshooting performance, and says numerous open apps or browser tabs may contribute to slowdowns. Its Windows PC performance tips provide further checks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Notice whether slowdowns coincide with many open applications or tabs.
- Check CPU, memory and disk activity while the slowdown is happening.
- Consider the whole system rather than attributing every delay to memory alone.
Should you keep 8 GB or upgrade?
Keep the current memory if it suits your use
If your 8 GB PC meets Windows 11’s other requirements and handles your everyday tasks well, the memory minimum alone is not a reason to replace it or upgrade.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Check the exact PC before buying memory
Some PCs support a memory upgrade; others do not. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC maker or a retailer. Use the exact make and model to verify whether memory is upgradeable, the supported memory type and form factor, available slots, the installed-module arrangement and the maximum capacity. Those details vary by device, so a generic 8 GB PC description is not enough to identify a compatible part.
