Yes. Carrier Wi-Fi Calling can receive ordinary calls over Wi-Fi when your carrier and phone support it, the feature is enabled for your line, and the phone has a working Wi-Fi connection. It can help when cellular reception is weak or unavailable, but support, call routing, and charges depend on your carrier, device, plan, and country.
How incoming calls reach your phone
Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature that lets a compatible phone use Wi-Fi for ordinary voice calls, including incoming calls. The caller generally dials your usual phone number; you answer through the phone’s normal calling interface. Apple describes the feature as a way to make or receive a voice call where cellular coverage is little or nonexistent. Apple Support and Google Phone app Help explain the feature and its carrier dependence.
For an incoming call to reach you over Wi-Fi, the relevant line must have Wi-Fi Calling enabled, the carrier must support it for your account and device, and the phone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network that works with the service. The feature is not a standalone internet calling app: carrier support and service terms still matter. Not every carrier supports Wi-Fi calls, and not every Wi-Fi network will work.

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling and confirm it is active
On iPhone
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular.
- If your iPhone has multiple lines, select the line you want to configure.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling and turn it on. Your carrier may ask you to enter or confirm an address for emergency services.
- Check the status bar or Control Centre for a Wi-Fi indicator alongside your carrier name when the phone is using Wi-Fi Calling. Menu labels and availability can vary by carrier and iOS version. See Apple’s setup instructions.
On Android
- Open your phone’s settings and look under the settings for the carrier SIM or mobile network for Wi-Fi Calling.
- Turn the feature on and complete any carrier prompts, including an emergency address if requested.
- Check the phone’s call or status indicators to see whether Wi-Fi Calling is being used. Exact settings paths and indicators vary by manufacturer, Android version, and carrier.
Google’s instructions note that if the setting is missing, the carrier may not support Wi-Fi Calling for that setup. Check Google’s Wi-Fi Calling help or ask your carrier to confirm device and account eligibility.

Keep the phone reachable
Leave Wi-Fi on and keep the phone connected to a working network. AT&T recommends enabling the setting that keeps Wi-Fi on while the device sleeps, if your phone offers one, to help prevent missed calls; that is guidance, not a guarantee that every network will deliver every call. See AT&T’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance.
Will it work with no cellular signal?
It can, which is one reason to use Wi-Fi Calling in places with poor or no cellular coverage. The phone still needs an active Wi-Fi connection, and the carrier must provide the feature for your line and location. A Wi-Fi network can have internet access yet still fail to support Wi-Fi Calling, so the presence of a Wi-Fi symbol alone does not prove the service is ready.

If Wi-Fi drops during a call, what happens next depends on the phone and carrier. Apple says an iPhone call can switch to the carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE when that option is available and enabled. Google Fi describes its own service as selecting Wi-Fi or cellular based on the connection and continuing a Wi-Fi-started call over mobile service if Wi-Fi weakens and mobile service is available. These examples do not establish identical behavior for every carrier. In Airplane mode, Wi-Fi can be turned back on, but a call can drop if Wi-Fi is lost while cellular service remains disabled. See Apple’s iPhone guide, Google Fi’s guidance, and Motorola’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance.

There is no universal rule that Wi-Fi calls are free. Charges depend on the carrier’s terms, your plan, the call’s origin or destination, and whether the call stays on Wi-Fi or moves to cellular. Google advises checking with your carrier because charges may apply. Google’s guidance does not set a price that applies across providers.

For a carrier-specific illustration, T-Mobile says incoming calls have no fee in the unlimited-plan scenario described on its page, while other plans may count calls against plan limits; international calls have separate terms depending on location and destination. T-Mobile also warns that a Wi-Fi connection dropping abroad can cause a call to switch to cellular and lead to unexpected charges. Those terms apply to the scenarios T-Mobile describes, not to all carriers or plans. Check T-Mobile’s current Wi-Fi Calling terms and your own carrier’s plan details.
Before traveling
- Confirm that your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling for your account and the country you will visit.
- Ask whether activation or emergency-address setup must be completed before departure; some carriers require setup before leaving your home country.
- Check how incoming and outgoing calls are billed for your plan, destination, and travel location.
- Find out whether a call can fall back to roaming cellular service if Wi-Fi disconnects, and what that would cost.
Country availability, restrictions, and rates can change. Motorola notes that some countries or carriers restrict calls; consult the carrier’s current terms rather than assuming a feature available at home will behave the same abroad.

Emergency calls need extra care
Wi-Fi Calling should not be treated as a guarantee that an emergency call will connect or that responders will receive your location. Apple says iPhone emergency calls use cellular service when available; if cellular is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Location information may assist responders, and some carriers may rely on the emergency address registered to your account. Enter or update that address when prompted and follow your carrier’s instructions. Apple also notes that emergency alerts may not be received while the phone is connected to Wi-Fi Calling. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling information and Apple’s emergency-calling guidance.

If incoming calls are not arriving over Wi-Fi
- Verify support. Ask the carrier whether Wi-Fi Calling is available for your plan, device, and line. If the setting is absent, carrier support may be the reason.
- Check the line and setting. On a phone with multiple SIMs, confirm that Wi-Fi Calling is enabled for the number you expect to receive calls on.
- Check the connection. Connect to a different Wi-Fi network if possible. Apple says not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling.
- Refresh the setup. Install available software updates, restart the phone, and try turning Wi-Fi Calling off and back on.
- Keep Wi-Fi active during sleep. If your device has a setting for this, enable it to reduce the chance of missed calls while the screen is off.
- Contact the carrier. If calls still fail, the carrier can check account provisioning, restrictions, and network compatibility.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers checking provider support and software, restarting, trying another Wi-Fi network, and toggling the feature. See Apple Support.
