Sometimes—but only when the flooring manufacturer and the cleaner or machine both approve the combination. Sealed or finished hardwood, waterproof laminate, and ceramic tile can be suitable for some low-moisture floor cleaners. Unfinished or unsealed hardwood and non-waterproof laminate are commonly excluded. Check the exact floor finish, the exact appliance or formula instructions, and the amount of moisture left behind before cleaning.
Why the answer depends on the floor
“Wet floor cleaner” covers several different tools: powered hard-floor machines, spray mops, and liquid formulas used with a mop. They do not all apply or remove the same amount of water, and a product approved for one surface is not automatically approved for another.
The important variables are the floor’s finish, its resistance to water, the cleaner’s approved surfaces, and how long moisture remains on the floor. A sealed finish can protect wood from a short, controlled cleaning pass; an unfinished board can absorb water at its surface and edges. Laminate may look like wood but has a different construction and can swell if water reaches its core. Tile itself is generally water-tolerant, while grout, sealants, and specialty finishes may have separate care requirements.

Kärcher’s hard-floor guidance makes the governing rule explicit: However please read the care guide for your flooring thoroughly before cleaning with any wet product!
That instruction applies even when a machine is marketed for hard floors.

Compatibility at a glance
| Surface | When wet cleaning may be acceptable | Conditions and exclusions | Moisture-control approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | Sealed, varnished, finished, or urethane-treated wood when the flooring maker allows wet cleaning | Unsealed and unfinished hardwood are excluded by the cited Kärcher machine guidance. Oiled and waxed floors may require a different detergent. | Remove loose dirt first, keep the machine moving in overlapping passes, and dry visible wet areas. |
| Laminate | Laminate explicitly identified as waterproof, with wet cleaning permitted in its care guide | Kärcher excludes non-waterproof laminate. A bottle labeled for laminate does not override the floor maker’s instructions. | Use the least moisture allowed, avoid lingering in one spot, and check for residual dampness. |
| Ceramic tile | Ceramic tile listed by the cleaner or machine, subject to the tile, grout, and sealant instructions | Compatibility of one ceramic tile or grout system does not prove compatibility of every tile, grout, coating, or sealer. | Use the approved formula and inspect grout lines and other porous areas for lingering moisture. |
Hardwood: use wet cleaning only on an approved finish
Identify the finish before adding water
Hardwood is the most conditional of the three surfaces. The cited Kärcher compatibility list includes specified sealed or finished wood categories, including sealed or varnished and urethane-treated wood. It excludes unsealed and unfinished hardwood. Your own floor’s care guide takes precedence over a general machine list, so identify the exact finish if possible and follow its cleaning limits.
Do not infer that every shiny board is safely sealed. Wear, scratches, gaps, exposed end grain, and older coatings can create routes for water. If the floor maker says to use only a dry method or a barely damp cloth, a powered wet cleaner is not an acceptable substitute.
Use a controlled cleaning pass
Kärcher’s parquet and laminate guidance recommends removing loose dirt before wet cleaning. Grit can act as an abrasive when a wet pad or roller moves over it. Once debris is removed, move the machine slowly in overlapping strokes rather than stopping over one area. A powered cleaner should continue moving while its rollers or pads are wet; do not park it on the floor while running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe FC5 guidance describes minimal moisture, not a moisture-free process. If a visible wet patch remains after a pass, dry it promptly according to the machine and floor instructions. Extra passes are not automatically safer: repeatedly wetting the same spot can increase exposure without improving the result.

Match the detergent to the wood treatment
Kärcher distinguishes detergent guidance for sealed wood, oiled or waxed wood, and stone. A solution intended for sealed wood should not be assumed suitable for an oiled or waxed surface. Check the machine’s approved detergent list, dilution directions, and the floor maker’s requirements together. Using more concentrate than directed can leave residue or create a surface that needs additional rinsing, which adds moisture.
Laminate: verify “waterproof” rather than guessing
Confirm the exact product’s water rating
Laminate construction varies. Kärcher’s machine guidance allows waterproof laminate only after verification and excludes non-waterproof laminate. The word “laminate” on a cleaner’s label is therefore insufficient: it describes the intended formula surface, not the water resistance of every laminate floor.
Find the flooring manufacturer’s current care guide or installation documentation and look for explicit language about wet mopping, spray mopping, or powered wet cleaners. If the documentation says to use a dry method, a damp microfiber cloth, or a specific low-moisture product, stay within that limit. Pay particular attention to seams, edges, transitions, and areas near sinks or exterior doors, where water can collect.
Understand the difference between formula and floor approval
Bona Pro Series Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner lists laminate and ceramic tile among its recommended uses. Its product page also lists vinyl, sealed marble, and sealed granite, and describes the formula as leaving no dulling or oily residue. Those are the manufacturer’s product descriptions; they do not establish that every laminate floor, or every machine, can tolerate wet cleaning.

The Bona technical data sheet dated May 1, 2026, says not to dilute the product and gives a drying time of 15–20 minutes under its stated conditions. Follow the label for the exact product you own rather than transferring those directions to another formula or appliance.
Tile: generally suitable, but check grout and coatings
Ceramic tile is listed for the cited products
The cited Kärcher hard-floor machine guidance includes ceramic tile, and Bona’s hard-surface cleaner and Premium Spray Mop guidance list ceramic tile among intended sealed hard-surface uses. That makes ceramic tile a supported category for those specific products, subject to their instructions.
Inspect the complete tile system
A tile installation includes more than the tile face. Grout may be porous, a sealer may have its own maintenance rules, and decorative or specialty coatings can react differently to detergents. Verify the exact tile, grout, sealant, and machine combination. If the tile maker or installer specifies a neutral or dedicated cleaner, use that formula rather than assuming a general hard-floor detergent is acceptable.
Use enough solution to clean, not to flood the joints. Keep a powered machine moving, collect dirty water as directed, and remove visible residual wetness. A spray mop for sealed floors can reduce the amount of liquid applied, but its formula and pad still need to be approved for the installation.

How to decide before the first cleaning pass
- Identify the floor precisely. Record the flooring brand or product line, surface type, finish, and installation location. “Wood look” does not distinguish hardwood from laminate or tile.
- Read the flooring care guide. Confirm whether wet cleaning is allowed, what tools are permitted, and whether the guidance limits moisture, detergent type, or frequency.
- Read the cleaner or appliance manual. Look for the exact surface category and exclusions. Check whether the machine requires a particular detergent, pad, roller, or dilution.
- For laminate, verify waterproof status. Do not rely on appearance or on a cleaner label that merely mentions laminate.
- Select the matching formula. Use a detergent intended for the relevant surface and machine. Follow the stated dilution or, where specified, the instruction not to dilute.
- Remove loose debris first. Vacuum or dry-clean grit before applying liquid, especially on wood and laminate.
- Test an inconspicuous area when advised. Check the result after the maker’s recommended drying period for haze, color change, swelling, or other damage.
- Clean with controlled movement. Work in overlapping strokes, keep powered equipment moving, and avoid repeatedly wetting one location.
- Dry residual moisture. If visible wet patches remain, remove them promptly using the method allowed by the floor and machine instructions.
Operating practices that limit moisture damage
- Use the minimum effective liquid. More solution is not a measure of better cleaning and can lengthen drying time.
- Do not let equipment sit in place. A stationary wet roller, pad, or nozzle concentrates moisture on one section.
- Keep clean and dirty fluids separate as designed. Follow the appliance’s tank and maintenance instructions so dirty water is not redistributed.
- Respect drying instructions. Bona’s technical sheet specifies 15–20 minutes for its Pro Series Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner under its stated conditions; another product may differ.
- Use the correct pad or roller. A pad designed for one floor type can be too aggressive or retain too much liquid for another.
- Store the machine off the floor when finished. Follow the appliance manual for emptying, rinsing, and drying its components so trapped water does not leak during storage.
What to do when something goes wrong
The floor is still visibly wet
Stop adding solution, keep people off the area, and dry the visible wetness using the floor maker’s approved method. Review whether the machine was held stationary, overfilled, used with an incorrect setting, or applied with too much formula. If wetness persists, stop using the appliance on that floor until the manufacturer provides guidance.
The surface looks streaky or hazy
Check the dilution, whether the product was used without dilution as required, and whether residue was left by excess solution. Confirm that the pad or roller is clean and that the formula is approved for the floor. Do not add a second chemical to “cut” the haze unless the floor maker specifically recommends it.
Laminate edges or seams appear swollen
Stop wet cleaning immediately and document the affected area. Swelling is a warning that moisture may have reached the laminate core or edge. Contact the flooring manufacturer or installer for remediation instructions; additional wet passes can worsen the condition.
Wood changes color, sheen, or texture
Stop using the cleaner and allow the area to dry. Compare the product and finish instructions, particularly if the floor is oiled or waxed rather than sealed. Do not switch to a stronger detergent without written approval from the floor maker.
How to compare wet-cleaning options
There is no balanced independent performance or price comparison established for the products discussed here. Choose by compatibility and moisture control first, then by convenience.
Quick Recap
| Selection criterion | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Floor approval | Does the floor maker name this type of machine, mop, or formula? | A cleaner’s marketing claim cannot override the flooring warranty or care guide. |
| Surface specificity | Is the product approved for this finish, not just a broad category such as “hard floor”? | Sealed, oiled, waxed, painted, and unfinished surfaces can have different requirements. |
| Residual moisture | How much liquid is applied, collected, and left behind? | Lower exposure reduces the chance of damage on moisture-sensitive floors. |
| Formula and dosage | Is a dedicated detergent required, and is it diluted or used as supplied? | Incorrect concentration can leave residue or increase drying time. |
| Maintenance | Can the pad, roller, tank, and hoses be cleaned and dried as directed? | Equipment that retains dirty water can spread residue on the next pass. |
| Spot testing | Does the manufacturer require a hidden-area test? | A small test can reveal finish reactions before broad application. |
Bottom-line rules for each floor
- Hardwood: Wet-clean only approved sealed or finished wood, use the matching detergent, keep the machine moving, and dry residual wetness. Never assume unfinished or unsealed boards are safe.
- Laminate: Confirm that the exact product is waterproof and that its care guide permits wet cleaning. Non-waterproof laminate is excluded by the cited Kärcher guidance.
- Tile: Ceramic tile is listed for the cited Kärcher machine and Bona hard-surface products, but verify the exact tile, grout, sealant, formula, and appliance.
