Yes—VGA and HDMI can work together when a converter changes the signal in the correct direction. VGA carries analog video, while HDMI carries digital video, so a generic cable or a connector that merely fits may not perform the conversion. Identify which device sends video, which receives it, and choose an adapter labeled for that direction.
Choose the adapter for the signal direction
Read the connection from the video source to the display. The source’s port determines the outgoing signal; the display’s port determines what it can accept.
| Source to display | What to look for | Signal conversion |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI source to VGA display | HDMI-to-VGA adapter | Digital to analog |
| VGA source to HDMI display | VGA-to-HDMI converter | Analog to digital |
For example, an HDMI laptop connected to a VGA projector needs an HDMI-to-VGA adapter. A VGA computer connected to an HDMI monitor needs a VGA-to-HDMI converter. Dell describes these as separate use cases in its HDMI-to-VGA adapter listing and VGA-to-HDMI converter listing.
Why direction and active conversion matter
A VGA-to-HDMI connection crosses from analog to digital; an HDMI-to-VGA connection crosses from digital to analog. The adapter must contain circuitry suitable for the conversion. Dell explains that active adapters have a chip that performs conversion, while passive adapters do not, and its guidance specifies active conversion for the VGA-to-HDMI port pairing. Most video adapters are not bidirectional, so do not assume a converter works in reverse just because both plugs fit.

Follow the product’s stated input and output labels, such as “VGA input, HDMI output.” Dell also cautions that analog-to-digital conversion is not guaranteed to work in every configuration. Check the manuals for the source, display, and converter for supported modes. When the devices have matching ports, a direct video cable is preferable for compatibility and performance, according to Dell’s video connection guidance.
Check audio, power, and display mode
Audio
VGA carries no audio. A VGA-only link will not send sound to speakers in a monitor or projector. If the setup needs audio, use a separate audio connection or confirm that the specific converter offers an audio input or another audio solution. Dell’s VGA connection guidance explains this limitation.

Power
Some converters need USB power or another power connection. Check the product details and connect any required power lead; the video plugs alone may not be enough. Dell’s C2G VGA-to-HDMI listing describes an integrated USB power cable.

Resolution and refresh rate
Verify that the source, converter, and display all support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. As a model-specific example, Dell’s C2G VGA-to-HDMI product listing specifies up to 1080p at 60 Hz. That figure applies to the listed product, not to VGA-to-HDMI converters generally or every combination of devices.
