Yes—Alexa can play different songs at the same time on separate devices when your music service and subscription allow multiple simultaneous streams. If you want the same song synchronized across rooms, use Multi-Room Music instead. A stereo pair is another setup, but it plays the left and right channels of one song—not two songs.
Can two Echo devices play different music at the same time?
They can, provided the music service’s account plan permits separate streams on those devices. This is different from grouping speakers: each device must be able to start its own playback, and the service’s simultaneous-stream limit applies.
Amazon Music’s FAQ states that its Family Plan supports music on up to six devices at once. Its Single Device plan is limited to one Echo or Fire TV device; the FAQ points listeners who want playback across multiple devices to Individual or Family plans. These are Amazon Music plan terms, not universal Alexa limits. Check the current terms for your service and subscription before relying on a particular stream count.

Multi-Room Music synchronizes the same music across compatible Alexa-enabled devices, including devices in different rooms. It is the right choice when you want the same playback throughout your home, not separate songs on each speaker. Amazon says audio from video content does not play on Multi-Room Music groups.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Set up a Multi-Room Music group
- Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
- Tap the Plus button.
- Choose Combine Speakers, then Multi-Room Music.
- Follow the app’s instructions to select compatible devices and finish creating the group.
Amazon says the app automatically creates an Everywhere Multi-Room Music group when there is more than one device.
Is a stereo pair the same as two songs?
No. A stereo pair combines two compatible Echo devices in the same room so one music playback can use left and right audio channels. The pair shares audio settings. It does not create two independent streams or play a different song on each speaker.

Which setup fits your goal?
| Goal | Alexa setup | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hear the same music in multiple rooms | Multi-Room Music group | Device compatibility and the music service’s support for playback on the group |
| Play different songs on separate devices | Start playback independently on each device | Your provider’s simultaneous-stream allowance and account plan |
| Get left/right stereo sound in one room | Stereo pair | Two compatible Echo devices placed in the same room |
Adding another compatible Alexa-enabled speaker can provide another playback location, but the speaker alone does not add another independent stream to your music subscription.
