Most tourists cannot get an Ebola vaccine simply because they are traveling. In the United States, CDC pre-exposure vaccination with Ervebo is aimed at adults aged 18 or older whose work creates a defined risk of contact with Ebola virus—for example, outbreak responders, certain healthcare workers, and high-containment laboratory staff. Travelers without close contact with an infected person generally face very little Ebola risk.

Ervebo is not a routine pharmacy travel shot. In the United States it is not commercially marketed; CDC distributes doses from the Strategic National Stockpile to people who meet occupational criteria. Internationally, WHO uses it mainly for outbreak response and preventive vaccination of healthcare and frontline workers in countries at risk.

What Ebola vaccine is available?

Only one licensed and WHO-prequalified vaccine is currently available specifically for Ebola virus disease caused by Ebola virus (EBOV), formerly called Zaire ebolavirus: Ervebo. It is a single-dose, live attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vaccine. The vaccine uses a vesicular stomatitis virus backbone carrying an Ebola-virus gene; it does not contain whole Ebola virus and cannot cause Ebola disease.

The product has a broad regulatory age indication: U.S. Food and Drug Administration information lists Ervebo for people aged 12 months and older. That does not mean every person in that age range can request it for travel. CDC’s U.S. pre-exposure occupational recommendation begins at age 18 because the recommendation is tied to defined adult work exposures rather than ordinary tourism.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ervebo protects against disease caused by EBOV. It should not be described as a vaccine against every virus informally called “Ebola.” There are no licensed vaccines for Bundibugyo virus disease, Sudan virus disease, or Taï Forest virus disease. WHO’s current guidance says Ervebo should be used for Bundibugyo virus disease only within a research protocol while evidence of protection in humans remains insufficient.

Can an ordinary tourist get an Ebola shot?

Usually, no. A standard holiday, business trip, safari, family visit, or transit itinerary does not normally qualify someone for routine pre-travel Ervebo vaccination. CDC’s Ebola Vaccine Information Statement says there is little risk of catching Ebola for travelers or members of the general public who have not cared for or been in close contact with someone infected with Ebola virus.

The relevant question is not simply “Am I traveling to Africa?” It is whether your planned activities create a realistic possibility of contact with Ebola patients, infectious body fluids, laboratory specimens, or materials contaminated with the virus. A person staying in ordinary hotels, using commercial transport, visiting tourist sites, and following public-health advice generally does not have the exposure profile for which pre-exposure vaccination is intended.

Do not assume that paying for a private travel consultation will produce a vaccine appointment. In the United States, Ervebo is held in a federal stockpile rather than routinely supplied to retail pharmacies. A travel clinic can assess your risk and coordinate with the relevant occupational or public-health authority, but it cannot treat Ervebo like a standard destination vaccine.

Who qualifies for pre-exposure Ervebo in the United States?

CDC identifies three main occupational categories for adults aged 18 or older. Eligibility is based on the work you will perform and the likelihood of exposure, not on nationality or a general desire for extra protection.

Outbreak responders

Adults traveling to an area with an active Ebola virus disease outbreak may qualify when they are deployed as outbreak responders. This can include personnel whose assigned duties put them in the response operation, such as infection-control, clinical, burial, logistics, or other roles with a documented possibility of exposure. The deploying organization and public-health authorities determine whether the role meets the vaccination criteria.

Healthcare personnel at designated treatment centers

Healthcare workers at federally designated special-pathogen treatment centers can qualify when they are involved, or are expected to be involved, in caring for or transporting a patient suspected or confirmed to have Ebola. Working in healthcare by itself is not enough. The facility, assignment, and expected duties must create the specific high-potential exposure addressed by CDC guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Laboratory and high-containment personnel

Adults working at biosafety-level 4 laboratories or at Laboratory Response Network facilities that might handle specimens containing live Ebola virus may qualify. This category covers laboratory personnel and other staff whose duties could bring them into contact with infectious material. Routine laboratory work that does not involve live Ebola specimens does not automatically meet the criterion.

CDC’s recommendation is therefore narrower than the vaccine’s FDA age indication. An adult can be old enough under the product label yet still not meet CDC’s occupational criteria for pre-exposure vaccination.

Tourist travel versus deployment travel

The following comparison shows why the same destination can lead to different advice for two travelers.

Decision factor Ordinary tourist Responder, designated clinician, or laboratory worker
Exposure role sightseeing, business, family visit, or routine transport without patient contact Potential contact with Ebola patients, infectious body fluids, live virus specimens, or contaminated equipment
Virus concern Usually no identified occupational exposure; any destination risk depends on current outbreak notices Potential exposure to EBOV in an active response, treatment, transport, or laboratory setting
Access route Routine travel clinic or pharmacy assessment; Ervebo is generally not offered for this purpose Employer, deployment program, designated treatment center, laboratory, or public-health authority coordinates access
Age framework No routine tourist recommendation CDC pre-exposure recommendation starts at age 18; the product’s FDA age indication is 12 months and older
Medical review Needed only if a public-health authority or clinician identifies a specific indication Required, including review of allergy, acute illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and immune status
Travel rules Follow current destination and re-entry instructions Follow outbreak-control procedures, occupational protocols, and any current border or flight measures

How healthcare workers and responders arrange vaccination

If your deployment may involve Ebola exposure, do not wait until you are at the airport. Start with the organization responsible for your assignment. In the United States, the process generally follows this sequence:

  1. Document the assignment. Identify the country, dates, facility, duties, patient-contact expectations, specimen-handling responsibilities, and whether an active outbreak is involved.
  2. Contact occupational health or the deployment medical team. Your employer, response agency, designated treatment center, or laboratory should determine whether your role fits CDC’s high-potential exposure categories.
  3. Arrange a specialist clinical assessment. The clinician reviews your medical history, allergies, current illness, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, immune status, and the timing of deployment.
  4. Coordinate stockpile access. Because Ervebo is not commercially marketed in the United States, an eligible program works with CDC or the relevant public-health authority to obtain a dose.
  5. Complete the required counseling. Discuss the single-dose schedule, expected reactions, pregnancy precautions, contact precautions after vaccination, and what to do if illness or an allergic reaction occurs.
  6. Keep deployment documentation. Carry the vaccination record and the employer’s occupational-health contact details. The record does not replace required screening or outbreak-control measures.

A private clinic should not promise stock or eligibility before this assessment. If your duties change—for example, from administrative support to patient transport—tell occupational health because the exposure determination may change.

WHO’s approach outside the United States

WHO recommends Ervebo for Ebola outbreak response and for preventive vaccination of healthcare and frontline workers in areas at risk of future outbreaks. This is a public-health strategy, not a general travel requirement.

Outbreak response doses

During an outbreak, countries can access vaccine through the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision global stockpile. Allocation is organized around the response: people with the greatest likelihood of exposure, including healthcare and frontline workers and contacts or contacts of contacts under the response strategy, are prioritized by local authorities.

Preventive vaccination in at-risk countries

Countries at risk can request preventive doses through Gavi’s preventive Ebola vaccination program. Availability, eligibility, and the locations offering vaccination depend on the country’s public-health plan. A visitor cannot assume that a preventive campaign for local frontline workers functions as a walk-in service for tourists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are deploying internationally, ask the sending organization and the destination country’s health authority which program applies. Rules can differ between an active outbreak campaign, routine preventive work, and research use.

Do you need an Ebola vaccine for Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or South Sudan?

There is no universal tourist requirement to receive Ervebo before visiting one of these countries. The answer depends on the current outbreak situation, your itinerary, and your activities.

CDC’s September 11, 2026 traveler notice describes special measures for people recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan. Recent travelers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo may face temporary restrictions on commercial flights to the United States. Travelers from Uganda or South Sudan may be routed through designated U.S. airports for public-health screening. These measures are separate from vaccine eligibility and can change quickly.

CDC’s outbreak information also advises avoiding specified high-risk provinces and using enhanced precautions elsewhere. Before departure, check the current CDC destination page, your own national health authority, and a qualified travel-medicine clinician. Recheck immediately before departure because an outbreak declaration, airport measure, or recommended itinerary can change after tickets are booked.

Medical conditions that require special review

Being in an eligible occupational category does not remove the need for an individual medical assessment.

Severe allergy

Do not receive Ervebo if you have had a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to a vaccine component. CDC product information specifically notes rice protein as an example of a component that can cause a serious reaction. Tell the vaccinating clinician about previous vaccine reactions, food or medication allergies, and any history of anaphylaxis.

Acute illness

Acute systemic illness is a reason to defer vaccination at that visit. If the illness resolves, vaccination can be rescheduled when the clinician considers it appropriate. A minor condition is not automatically disqualifying, but the decision belongs to the vaccinating professional.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Ervebo is live attenuated, and pregnancy data are limited. Pregnancy and breastfeeding therefore require an individualized benefit-risk discussion. For a high-risk deployment, the clinician weighs the danger of Ebola exposure against the limited pregnancy evidence; for ordinary tourism, the lack of a routine indication generally means there is no reason to accept that uncertainty.

Immune compromise

CDC Yellow Book guidance says safety and efficacy have not been adequately assessed in immunocompromised adults. A clinician should weigh the potential vaccination risk against the expected Ebola exposure risk, considering the cause and severity of immune compromise, treatment, and deployment conditions.

Precautions after Ervebo

Post-vaccination instructions are part of the medical plan, especially for people deployed around vulnerable contacts.

  • Pregnancy prevention: CDC advises using barrier methods to prevent pregnancy for two months after vaccination.
  • Close contact: Follow current product instructions about avoiding close contact with certain high-risk people for the specified period after vaccination.
  • Livestock and vaccine-material precautions: Follow instructions to avoid exposure of livestock or other animals to vaccine-virus materials for up to six weeks, as applicable to the deployment setting.
  • Occupational reporting: Report significant reactions or an unexpected exposure to occupational health or the response medical team.

These instructions are not a substitute for personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, safe injection practices, patient isolation, or other Ebola infection-prevention procedures.

What Ervebo does not replace

Vaccination does not make every activity safe and does not protect against all orthoebolaviruses. It does not eliminate the need to avoid contact with blood or body fluids, follow instructions from local health authorities, use appropriate protective equipment, or report symptoms and exposures promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also does not turn an ordinary travel itinerary into an indication for vaccination. The exposure assessment remains central: a trained responder entering an Ebola treatment area and a tourist visiting a city during the same week do not have the same risk profile.

Practical answers to common travel questions

“Is there an Ebola vaccine for tourists?”

There is an Ebola vaccine, but routine tourist vaccination is generally not recommended or available in the United States. Ervebo is reserved for defined high-exposure occupational situations and public-health campaigns.

“Can I buy Ervebo at a pharmacy?”

In the United States, no. CDC states that Ervebo is not commercially marketed and is held in the Strategic National Stockpile. Eligible programs coordinate access through CDC and public-health channels rather than ordinary retail distribution.

“Can healthcare workers get it before deployment?”

Some can. Adults aged 18 or older who will work at federally designated special-pathogen treatment centers, transport suspected or confirmed Ebola patients, respond to an active outbreak, or handle live Ebola specimens in qualifying laboratories may meet CDC criteria. Their employer or deployment authority must verify the assignment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Does the vaccine cover every Ebola strain?”

No. Ervebo is specifically for EBOV, formerly Zaire ebolavirus. No licensed vaccines currently cover Bundibugyo, Sudan, or Taï Forest virus disease, and WHO limits Ervebo use for Bundibugyo disease to research protocols while evidence is insufficient.

How to make a safe travel decision

  1. Write down your exact itinerary, including provinces, border crossings, transit airports, and planned activities.
  2. Classify your role: tourist, family visitor, healthcare worker, responder, patient transporter, laboratory worker, or another occupation.
  3. Check the latest CDC, WHO, and national-health-authority notices for outbreak areas, airport screening, and flight restrictions.
  4. If your work could involve Ebola patients or live specimens, contact occupational health or your deployment medical team before travel is finalized.
  5. Tell the clinician about allergies, acute illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and immune-suppressing conditions.
  6. Follow all infection-control and post-vaccination instructions even if you receive Ervebo.
