Yes, the Surface Laptop Ultra can run games. Microsoft positions it as a gaming-capable Windows laptop with an NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip, ray tracing, DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex in supported titles and a 120 Hz display. Windows Central reported smooth demonstrations of Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The decisive qualification is its ARM-based Windows design: GPU capability does not guarantee that a particular game, launcher or anti-cheat system will work. Check every must-play title for current Windows on Arm support before you buy.

What the Surface Laptop Ultra is—and what that means for gaming

The Surface Laptop Ultra is a Windows on Arm computer rather than a conventional x86 gaming laptop. Microsoft announced preorders on October 7, 2026, with a starting MSRP of $2,599 and availability beginning October 16, 2026. Those are Microsoft’s published U.S. launch figures; local prices, configurations, taxes, retailer stock and delivery dates can differ.

Microsoft describes the laptop as using the NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip. Its product materials list hardware-accelerated ray tracing, DLSS upscaling and NVIDIA Reflex for supported games, alongside a 120 Hz display. These are capabilities, not a promise that every game will run at a particular resolution or frame rate.

The laptop is primarily presented as a professional and creator machine that also plays games. That distinction matters if gaming is your main reason for spending $2,599 or more. A gaming-focused laptop may offer broader game compatibility and more predictable performance at the same local budget, while the Surface Laptop Ultra may better suit someone who also values its creator, AI and premium productivity features.

Can it run demanding games?

There is credible evidence that it can. In an October 7, 2026 hands-on report, Windows Central said it saw Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle running smoothly in demonstrations. The report also noted that many demonstrations used Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer.

Those observations establish that modern games can run on the platform; they do not constitute a retail-unit benchmark suite. The report did not provide a broad compatibility list or a frame-rate table, and no independently measured average FPS figure is established by the available evidence. Do not convert “ran smoothly” into a guaranteed 60, 120 or any other FPS target.

What the graphics features actually do

  • Ray tracing: enables supported games to render more realistic lighting, reflections and shadows, but the visual effect can reduce performance and must be implemented by the game.
  • DLSS: can use NVIDIA’s upscaling technology in supported titles to render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a sharper image. A game must support the relevant DLSS mode.
  • NVIDIA Reflex: can reduce end-to-end latency in supported games. It is not a universal Windows setting that applies to every title.
  • 120 Hz display: allows the panel to refresh up to 120 times per second. Reaching that refresh rate depends on the game, settings, power mode and workload.

Microsoft’s October 7 announcement describes these features together with a “deep and growing catalog” of Windows on Arm games, but the company explicitly qualifies the graphics features as applying “in supported titles.” That wording is important: it is not a blanket compatibility guarantee.

Why Windows on Arm compatibility is the main risk

Windows on Arm can run native Arm applications and can emulate many x86 and x64 applications through Prism. Emulation may let a game launch without an Arm-native build, but a successful launch does not prove that performance, stability, online play or updates will be satisfactory.

Microsoft’s Windows on Arm guidance identifies two especially important failure points:

  • Games that depend on OpenGL versions above 3.3 may not work correctly.
  • Anti-cheat drivers that have not been updated for Arm may block a game from starting or prevent online play.

Compatibility is title-specific and can change when the game, launcher, Windows, graphics driver or anti-cheat component is updated. A game that works today may need a new patch tomorrow, while an update can also fix a previous problem.

Anti-cheat deserves a separate check

Competitive multiplayer games often install a kernel-level or otherwise privileged anti-cheat component. Prism can emulate the game executable, but it cannot automatically make an incompatible Arm driver work. If the anti-cheat system lacks Arm support, the game may fail before the main menu, disconnect you from protected servers or allow single-player play while blocking multiplayer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer anti-cheat compatibility from a successful single-player launch. Search for a current developer statement, an up-to-date Windows on Arm compatibility report or recent user reports for the exact game and launcher version you intend to use.

  1. Write a must-play list. Include the exact edition, store or launcher and whether you need online multiplayer. “The franchise works” is not enough; separate releases can use different engines, launchers and anti-cheat systems.
  2. Look for Windows on Arm status. Prefer a current statement from the game developer or publisher. If none exists, look for recent reports that identify the Surface Laptop Ultra or the same RTX Spark Superchip and Windows build.
  3. Check the graphics API. Microsoft specifically warns about OpenGL above version 3.3. A game using DirectX may still have other compatibility issues, but an OpenGL dependency above that threshold is a clear warning sign.
  4. Identify anti-cheat and launcher requirements. Find out whether the title uses an anti-cheat driver, a separate launcher, hardware checks or a required background service. Check each component for Arm support rather than checking only the game executable.
  5. Separate launchability from playability. Ask whether the evidence covers your target resolution, quality preset, refresh rate, power mode and session length. “It opens” is not evidence of stable frame rates or acceptable latency.
  6. Check update timing. Compatibility can change with Windows, driver, game and anti-cheat updates. Look for reports close to your purchase date, not only an old launch-day test.
  7. Confirm the return policy. If a must-play title has no clear Arm support, buy only where you can test it and return the laptop within the allowed window.

What the known demonstrations prove—and what they do not

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish
Windows Central saw Fortnite running smoothly At least one demonstration configuration could run Fortnite. Every Fortnite mode, update, anti-cheat state, resolution or power mode will perform identically.
Windows Central saw Alan Wake 2 running smoothly A demanding modern title can run in a demonstrated setup. A guaranteed FPS figure, preset, ray-tracing setting or retail-unit result.
Windows Central saw Indiana Jones and the Great Circle running smoothly The platform is capable of running another demanding current game. Universal compatibility with other titles using different engines or protection systems.
Many demonstrations used Prism x86/x64 emulation can make some games usable on Windows on Arm. That every x86/x64 game will emulate successfully or deliver native-like performance.

Use the demonstrations as evidence that gaming is possible, not as a substitute for checking your own library.

Configuration details that affect a gaming purchase

Memory

Microsoft lists configurations with up to 128 GB of unified memory. That is a maximum configuration figure, not the standard entry configuration, and the memory is shared by the CPU and GPU. Shared memory can be useful for large creator workloads, but the amount available to a game also depends on what Windows and other applications are using.

Check the exact memory tier in the configuration you are ordering. Do not assume that a $2,599 starting model includes 128 GB.

Storage

Microsoft’s current product information lists options up to 2 TB and says the laptop has upgradeable storage, published repair guides and replacement parts. Large modern games can consume substantial space, particularly when high-resolution texture packs are installed. Verify the installed capacity, drive specification and the cost and procedure for a future upgrade before choosing a smaller configuration.

Display and power

The 120 Hz panel is useful for games that can sustain high frame rates, but the refresh ceiling does not increase the performance of a title that runs at 45 or 60 FPS. Performance can also vary between plugged-in and battery operation, and between balanced, quiet and high-performance modes if those modes are offered by the final configuration. Look for testing that matches how you will actually play.

When the Surface Laptop Ultra is a sensible gaming choice

  • You want one premium Windows computer for professional, creator or AI work and occasional or moderate gaming.
  • Your essential games have current evidence of working on Windows on Arm, including their launchers and anti-cheat components.
  • You value a 120 Hz display, modern NVIDIA features and potentially large unified-memory configurations more than maximum game-library compatibility.
  • You are willing to check compatibility again after major game or Windows updates.

When a gaming-focused laptop is safer

  • Your priority is playing a wide and changing library, including older PC games, niche titles or competitive games with strict anti-cheat requirements.
  • You need predictable performance figures, upgrade paths or profiles based on established x86 gaming hardware.
  • You are buying mainly for gaming and would rather spend the budget on graphics performance, cooling and a larger game-ready software ecosystem than on creator or productivity features.
  • A must-play title has no current Arm support statement or has reports of anti-cheat failure.

No direct competitor benchmark was established in the available evidence, so a value-per-frame comparison would require testing the exact local alternatives and configurations yourself.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Record each must-play game, edition, launcher and multiplayer requirement.
  • Confirm current Windows on Arm support for the game and all anti-cheat components.
  • Check whether the game uses OpenGL above 3.3 or another documented compatibility risk.
  • Find title-specific tests that identify resolution, quality settings, power mode and whether Prism was used.
  • Do not rely on a qualitative “smooth” description as an FPS guarantee.
  • Verify the exact memory and storage configuration, local price and return policy.
  • Decide whether the laptop’s professional and creator features justify paying for a machine that may not support every game in your library.

Bottom line

The Surface Laptop Ultra can run games, including demanding titles demonstrated by Windows Central, and its RTX Spark Superchip, 120 Hz display, ray tracing, DLSS and supported-title Reflex features give it genuine gaming capability. It is not a universal gaming laptop, however. Windows on Arm, Prism emulation, OpenGL limits and anti-cheat driver support make compatibility a game-by-game question. Buy it for gaming only after your own must-play list passes that check; otherwise, choose a gaming-focused Windows laptop with the compatibility and performance evidence your library requires.
