Yes, but not the entire SteamVR catalog. Steam Frame is a self-contained SteamOS PC that can install and run compatible standalone VR and non-VR games without another computer. Games that require the Windows or Linux PC versions, including most of the broader SteamVR library, must be streamed from a gaming PC, laptop, Steam Deck, or another supported host.

What “without a PC” means on Steam Frame

There are two different questions hidden in the phrase “without a PC.” If you mean “Can the headset launch any games by itself?”, the answer is yes. If you mean “Can it run every PC SteamVR game locally, with no host computer?”, the answer is no.

Use case Where the game executes Separate computer required?
Native standalone VR title On Steam Frame as an ARM64 or Android application No, provided the title is compatible
Native standalone non-VR title On Steam Frame, using its SteamOS environment and controls or a connected controller No, provided the title is compatible
Windows PC game On a Windows host, with video and input streamed to the headset Yes
Linux PC game On a Linux host, with the game streamed to the headset Yes
PC SteamVR application On the host computer through SteamVR; Steam Frame acts as the headset and streaming endpoint Yes

Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone virtual-reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. That wording is important: standalone capability is real, but streaming remains the main way to reach the full PC library.

How games run on the headset

Standalone execution

Steam Frame runs SteamOS on hardware based on a 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Its 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory is shared by the operating system, graphics workloads and applications. A game that has a native build for the device can download its files to the headset and render locally. No desktop operating system, USB cable or active network connection to a gaming computer is needed after installation, although online features may still require internet access.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

Steamworks identifies native ARM64 applications and Android APK applications as execution models that can run on the device. A game therefore needs more than ordinary SteamVR support: it needs an appropriate standalone build, compatible input handling and performance that fits the headset’s hardware and operating system.

PC streaming

For a streamed title, the game remains installed and running on the host. The host renders each frame, encodes the video stream and sends it over the network. Steam Frame decodes that stream, tracks headset and controller input, and sends the input back. The host’s processor, graphics card, memory, Windows or Linux drivers and SteamVR installation determine whether the game can run. Steam Frame does not turn a PC-only title into a native application.

Steam Support’s streaming troubleshooting guidance specifically tells users to restart the SteamVR application on the host PC when a streamed session fails. That is a practical confirmation that streamed SteamVR play still depends on an active host computer.

Which games work standalone?

Steam Frame Standalone Verified

Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified program is the most useful first check. Valve says the program identifies which VR and non-VR games in your library are expected to work standalone. The designation is more relevant to this question than a generic SteamVR compatibility label because it reflects local execution on Steam Frame rather than merely compatibility with a PC headset.

Valve and Steam Hardware reported more than 100 Steam Frame Standalone Verified games in 2026. That number is time-sensitive: the catalog is growing and can change as developers add native builds, update performance, or change support. Check the current store or library designation before buying a game specifically for offline or PC-free play.

Why SteamVR compatibility is not enough

A title can be SteamVR-compatible and still require a computer. “SteamVR” commonly describes a PC runtime and headset interface; it does not guarantee an ARM64 or Android package for Steam Frame. The decisive questions are:

  • Does the developer provide a native standalone build for Steam Frame?
  • Does the game appear as Steam Frame Standalone Verified in the current library or store information?
  • Are the required controls, graphics features and online services supported on the headset?
  • Is the title being launched locally, or is Steam offering the Windows or Linux PC version for streaming?

VR and non-VR coverage

Standalone support is not limited to VR. Valve explicitly says the program covers both VR and non-VR games. A non-VR game may run as a conventional flat-screen application in the headset, while a standalone VR game uses headset tracking and motion controllers. The two categories can have different storage requirements, control schemes and performance limits, so a verified status for one mode should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every optional feature in another mode.

Steam Frame hardware that affects standalone play

Component Official figure What it means for game choice
System memory 16GB unified LPDDR5X RAM, Valve, 2026 Shared memory supports standalone applications, but it is not equivalent to a desktop PC with separate system RAM and graphics memory.
Processor 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Valve, 2026 Native builds must be optimized for this ARM-based mobile-class platform rather than assuming a desktop CPU or GPU.
Storage 256GB or 1TB UFS options, Valve, 2026 Install size matters; large games and updates consume local capacity. A larger option reduces juggling, while expansion decisions should account for supported microSD use.
Controller battery About 40 hours per controller on one AA battery, Valve, 2026 Keep replacement AA cells available for long standalone sessions; this figure is Valve’s stated estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every use pattern.

Storage is especially important when you want to leave a PC behind. A streamed game can remain on the host and consume little headset storage, whereas a native game must download its application and updates locally. Valve documents microSD support as an expansion path, but available capacity, formatting and loading performance can vary by card and software version; use a card that meets the current device guidance rather than assuming every card behaves identically.

How to play a compatible game without a computer

  1. Check the listing first. In Steam, look for the Steam Frame Standalone Verified designation or explicit standalone support. Do not rely only on a generic SteamVR icon.
  2. Sign in and connect the headset. Complete SteamOS setup, account sign-in and any required system updates. An initial internet connection is normally needed to authenticate and download software.
  3. Install the native version. Open the game’s library page on Steam Frame and choose the version or install option offered for the device. If Steam presents only a PC streaming option, the title is not available as a native local build through that listing.
  4. Confirm free space. Check the download size and leave additional room for patches, shader data and saved-game files. On the 256GB model, large installations may require removing older games or using supported external storage.
  5. Launch locally. Start the game from the headset library with the host computer turned off or disconnected. A successful launch that continues rendering after the host is unavailable confirms that the native build is being used.
  6. Configure controls and comfort. Follow the game’s first-run calibration, guardian or room setup and controller prompts. Non-VR games may require a gamepad or another supported input method.

Some games can offer both a native application and a streamed PC version. Treat them as separate execution paths: local play uses the headset’s processor, memory and storage; streaming uses the host’s hardware and network.

How to play the wider SteamVR library by streaming

Required equipment

  • A compatible gaming PC, laptop, Steam Deck or other supported host with the game installed.
  • Steam and, for PC VR titles, the SteamVR application installed on that host.
  • A network connection capable of carrying a low-latency, high-bitrate video stream. A wired connection for the host and a strong local wireless link for the headset generally reduce contention, but Valve’s final networking requirements should be checked as they evolve.
  • The same Steam account, or an approved library-sharing arrangement, available on the host and Steam Frame.

Connection procedure

  1. Install or update the game on the host computer and verify that it launches correctly there.
  2. Install or update SteamVR on the host for VR titles. Resolve any driver or headset errors before attempting to stream.
  3. Connect Steam Frame and the host to the same local network when using local streaming. Avoid routing the session through a distant internet connection unless the service explicitly supports it.
  4. Open Steam on Steam Frame, find the library entry and choose the play or stream option that targets the host.
  5. Accept the pairing or authorization prompt on the host if Steam displays one.
  6. Start SteamVR on the host when prompted, then wait for the headset and controllers to appear as ready.
  7. Adjust streaming resolution, bitrate or refresh settings only after confirming a stable session. Increasing quality can add bandwidth demand and latency.

In this mode, turning off the host, closing SteamVR or losing the network ends the game even though the headset itself remains powered. The host can be a desktop, laptop or Steam Deck; the requirement is a supported machine that actually executes the PC build.

Standalone versus streaming: which mode fits?

Factor Native standalone PC streaming
Computer requirement None after local installation Active supported host required
Game selection Growing, title-specific set marked for standalone Entire Steam library that the host can run, subject to Steam and SteamVR support
Graphics performance Limited by Steam Frame’s Snapdragon platform and thermal envelope Limited primarily by the host GPU and CPU
Latency source Local rendering and headset processing Rendering, encoding, network transport and decoding all add delay
Storage use on headset Full native game and update files Usually a small streaming client footprint; game files remain on host
Offline use Possible for installed games that do not require online services or periodic authentication Not possible without the host and network session
Best fit Travel, quick sessions and games with a verified native build High-end PC VR, demanding graphics and titles without a native build

Choose standalone when portability, simplicity or offline access matters more than maximum visual fidelity. Choose streaming when the game is unverified, graphically demanding or dependent on PC-only mods and runtimes.

Troubleshooting PC-free play

The game will not install locally

Recheck the store and library designation. If the title is only listed as a Windows or Linux PC application, Steam Frame can stream it but cannot install that PC build as a native headset application. Free storage and pending system updates can also block installation.

The title launches but performs poorly

Confirm that you installed the native build rather than starting a streamed session. Close other applications, lower the game’s internal quality options and ensure the headset firmware is current. A verified label indicates expected compatibility, not a desktop-level frame rate or identical graphics settings.

The game starts in streaming mode unexpectedly

Disconnect or shut down the host and try launching again. If the local option disappears, the title may not have a native build, or the current account and store region may not expose it. Check the game’s latest Steam Frame designation before deleting and reinstalling files.

Streaming has stutter or visible delay

Keep the host and headset on the same local network, reduce competing traffic, and prefer a wired host connection where practical. Lower the stream bitrate or resolution if the network is saturated. Restart SteamVR on the host, as Steam Support recommends for streaming failures, then reconnect the headset.

Controllers stop responding

Replace or reseat the AA batteries, confirm controller pairing and repeat the room or play-space setup. A native game and a streamed PC game can expose different bindings, so inspect the game’s control menu rather than assuming that a working controller pairing guarantees correct in-game actions.

What to check before buying a game for PC-free use

  • Look for the current Steam Frame Standalone Verified status, not just SteamVR support.
  • Confirm whether the listing describes a native ARM64 or Android application, a streamed PC version, or both.
  • Compare the game’s install size with free space on the 256GB or 1TB model you plan to use.
  • Check whether multiplayer, account checks, anti-cheat, mods or downloadable content require online services or a PC runtime.
  • Read update notes after major game or headset releases because standalone support and performance can change.
  • If you already own a capable gaming PC, treat streaming as the way to access unverified and high-demand titles rather than waiting for a native port.

The practical rule is simple: Steam Frame can be a self-contained game device for compatible native titles, while its complete SteamVR experience is a streaming interface to another computer. Verify the execution model for each game before assuming that a PC-free launch is available.
