Yes, but only if portability is your priority. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a Windows 11 gaming handheld with Xbox integration, built-in controls and enough flexibility to play PC games locally, use Xbox Cloud Gaming, or stream games from an Xbox console. It can take the place of a laptop for travel and controller-first play, and it can serve as an Xbox companion without a separate screen. It is not a one-for-one replacement for a similarly priced gaming laptop in demanding AAA games, nor does it deliver the native performance and simplicity of an Xbox Series X|S.
What the ROG Xbox Ally X20 actually is
The X20 is a full Windows computer in a handheld form factor, not a portable Xbox console running console software. You can install and launch games from Steam and other Windows storefronts, use ordinary Windows applications, connect peripherals, and switch between local PC gaming and Xbox services. Its Xbox interface and controller-style grips make it feel more console-like than a conventional small Windows PC, but Windows remains underneath.
ASUS lists Windows 11 Home, access to the Windows game catalog, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play. Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox; Cloud Gaming streams supported titles from Microsoft’s servers. Local play uses the Windows PC version of a game, including compatible Xbox Play Anywhere titles, rather than the Xbox console build.

The $1,299 figure is the price reported for that review configuration, not a promise of a current price in every country. The earlier 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X launched at $999.99 in the United States, according to TechRadar. Model names, regional prices and availability can change, so check the exact X20 listing for your market before treating either figure as a purchase quote.

Can it replace a gaming laptop?
When the answer is yes
The X20 can replace a gaming laptop when the laptop’s main jobs are playing PC games, carrying a Windows computer between locations and connecting occasionally to a larger screen. Its integrated controls eliminate the need to pack a gamepad, and the 715g chassis is much easier to hold on a sofa, in bed or during a journey than a laptop with a separate controller.
Because it is a standard Windows PC, you retain access to PC storefronts and software rather than being limited to an Xbox catalog. Connect a USB-C dock to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse and it can function as a small desktop. Bluetooth accessories are also supported. This makes it practical for a student, traveler or living-room user who values one compact device over a permanently installed gaming station.
Where a gaming laptop remains better
A gaming laptop normally has more sustained electrical power, a larger cooling system and, in many models, a discrete graphics processor. Those advantages matter most in demanding AAA games at high settings or high frame rates. TechRadar notes that the X20’s integrated graphics cannot match a similarly priced gaming laptop. Tom’s Guide described native Cyberpunk 2077 performance as sluggish on the $1,299 X20 configuration.

The difference is not merely a benchmark issue. A laptop can maintain higher performance for longer while plugged in, offers a substantially larger screen and keyboard, and may provide more storage or upgrade options depending on the model. The X20’s 1080p screen is sharp for a handheld, but it cannot provide the workspace or viewing distance of a 15- or 16-inch laptop.
Performance, battery and heat in independent testing
PC Gamer measured approximately 2 hours and 9 minutes in a 25-watt gaming mode and almost 3 hours in a 17-watt mode. In its testing, lighter indie games lasted up to 9 hours. These are test results, not guaranteed runtimes: the game, screen brightness, frame-rate limit, resolution, wireless activity and selected power mode all change consumption.
PC Gamer found performance broadly similar to the previous Ally X because both systems use the same chip and memory class, while recording improved cooling. Its comparison reached up to 79°C on the X20 versus 96°C on the earlier device. Cooler operation can help comfort and sustained performance, but it does not turn integrated graphics into a discrete laptop GPU.

What the $1,299 price means
At the cited review price, the X20 asks you to pay for a combination of handheld controls, OLED display, Windows flexibility and Xbox integration. A laptop at a similar price generally offers more AAA performance per dollar, while the X20 offers a form factor a laptop cannot duplicate. Your real cost can also include a dock for desk or TV use, a larger microSD or replacement SSD if your library outgrows 1TB, and any Game Pass subscription needed for cloud or online console features.

ASUS says its ROG XG Mobile accessory can add up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. That can provide desktop-class graphics when docked, but it is an additional purchase and changes the economics substantially. Buying the X20 plus an external GPU is an expansion path, not evidence that the handheld itself matches a gaming laptop.
Can it replace an Xbox console?
Local Xbox and PC play without an Xbox
You can play a supported Xbox game without owning an Xbox console when a Windows PC version is available. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can provide a shared purchase and progress between Xbox and PC editions, subject to each title’s support. Other games must have a separate PC release or be available through a PC subscription. The X20 runs those PC versions locally, so image quality and responsiveness depend on the handheld’s hardware and the game’s Windows settings.

This is the closest the X20 comes to replacing a console: install the PC version, connect the handheld to a TV if desired, and use its built-in controls or a Bluetooth gamepad. It still involves Windows updates, launchers and PC graphics settings, so the setup is less appliance-like than an Xbox Series X|S.
Remote Play from an Xbox you already own
Remote Play does not remove the need for an Xbox. It streams games installed on that console to the X20 over the internet. ASUS says the Xbox must have remote features enabled and both ends need a suitable internet connection. The console remains responsible for running the game; the handheld displays the stream and sends your controller input back.

It is not a replacement for the console’s hardware, because the Xbox must be powered or available to wake remotely and must contain the game. A weak home upload connection, high latency or congested Wi-Fi can produce input delay and image artifacts even when the X20 itself has plenty of performance.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming can provide instant access to supported titles without installing a PC version. ASUS states that cloud gaming requires a supported device and Game Pass Ultimate. The game runs in Microsoft’s data center, so results depend on internet quality, server distance and the title’s availability in the service. Cloud saves and the ability to start without a local installation are convenient, but cloud play is inherently less predictable than running a game locally.
What it cannot reproduce
The X20 is not a native Xbox Series X|S replacement. An Xbox console offers a fixed hardware target, a controller-first interface and local console performance without Windows desktop maintenance. On the X20, the console-like experience may instead involve a PC port, Remote Play or Cloud Gaming, each with different requirements and trade-offs. Online console multiplayer also requires a Game Pass membership, according to ASUS, so subscription access is part of the decision.

The handheld can become a docked system, but plan for the accessories and power needed for that role.
- Choose a powered USB-C dock. ASUS recommends a 130W USB-C dock class for external displays and peripherals; the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) is an example of that accessory category.
- Connect the display. Attach the dock to a monitor or television, then connect the display cable to the dock. Select the display input and use Windows display settings if you want to mirror or extend the screen.
- Add controls. Plug in a keyboard and mouse for desktop use, or pair a Bluetooth controller for a console-style setup. The built-in controls remain available when the handheld is undocked.
- Connect power before demanding play. A dock can charge the X20 while it is driving an external display, but the dock and charger must provide the required wattage for the selected performance mode.
- Set expectations for resolution. The internal panel is 1080p. An external 1440p or 4K display is supported as a display device, but integrated graphics may require reduced game settings or resolution to maintain smooth frame rates.
Portability, screen and controls: the reasons to choose it
The X20’s strongest argument is that the controls, screen and computer travel together. The Xbox-controller-inspired grips are designed for long handheld sessions, while the 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED panel provides high contrast and fast refresh for games that can sustain it. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 cover modern wireless networking and accessories.
The trade-off is weight and endurance. At 715g, it is heavier than a phone or small tablet, and the 80Wh battery is consumed quickly by high-power games. Carrying a charger is sensible for travel, especially if you intend to use the 25W mode. Battery-saving modes extend play time by reducing performance, and lighter games benefit far more than new AAA releases.

Important checks before buying
- Confirm the exact model and price. The $1,299 amount applies to the X20 configuration reviewed by Tom’s Guide in 2026; regional listings may differ.
- Check every game’s PC support. Xbox branding does not guarantee that a console-only title has a native Windows version.
- Budget for subscriptions. Cloud Gaming needs Game Pass Ultimate, and online console multiplayer needs a Game Pass membership.
- Plan storage. The reviewed model has a 1TB SSD, and large PC installations can consume it quickly.
- Expect setup work. Windows updates, storefront launchers, graphics settings and controller profiles are part of ownership.
- Test your network for streaming. Remote Play and Cloud Gaming are sensitive to latency, upload quality and Wi-Fi congestion.
Verdict
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a portable Windows gaming PC and Xbox companion, not as a universal substitute for every gaming system. It can replace a laptop for a portability-first player who values handheld controls and can accept lower AAA performance. It can replace much of an Xbox console’s access when PC versions, Remote Play or Cloud Gaming meet your needs. If your priorities are maximum sustained graphics performance, native console simplicity or long unplugged sessions in demanding games, keep the gaming laptop or Xbox console.
