Yes—the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) can run demanding Windows PC games. The important qualification is what “run” means. Recent AAA releases may require a lower graphics preset, reduced render resolution, an upscaler such as FSR2, and an appropriate power mode. Independent tests include demanding games below 60 frames per second at 1080p ultra, while another title ran only after a major resolution reduction that made the image visibly blurry.

The Ally X is best understood as a high-performance Windows gaming handheld that can make difficult games playable with tuning, not as a replacement for a desktop graphics card or gaming laptop. Use the game-specific results and settings below to judge whether its compromises fit your expectations.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X is—and what its screen does not promise

The ROG Xbox Ally X is a Windows 11 handheld built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS lists a 7-inch 1,920×1,080 touchscreen, a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium and an 80Wh battery. Its Xbox-oriented full-screen interface is designed to provide console-style access to a Windows game library, while the underlying operating system remains Windows.

A 120Hz panel can refresh the image up to 120 times per second; it does not make a demanding game render at 120 frames per second. The benchmark results below show why that distinction matters: several graphically intensive games land in the high 20s, 30s or 40s at 1080p with high or ultra settings. FreeSync can make variable frame rates look smoother, but it cannot create frames the hardware has not rendered.

The device can access Windows PC storefronts. TechRadar specifically lists Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, while ASUS describes access to a player’s Windows game catalog through the Xbox full-screen experience. Storefront access is not the same as a guarantee that every title will work perfectly. A game’s launcher, controller implementation, anti-cheat system, system requirements and patches still determine the practical result.

How fast is it in demanding games?

There is no single “Ally X frame rate.” Results change with the game engine, resolution, preset, upscaling mode, power limit, whether the device is plugged in and the exact test scene. The following measurements should therefore be read as examples under specified conditions, not promises for every owner.

ASUS’s plugged-in Turbo comparison

ASUS compared the Xbox Ally X with the earlier ROG Ally X using 1,920×1,080 output, default in-game graphics, Turbo mode and plugged-in power. The company reported these average in-game results:

Game ROG Xbox Ally X Earlier ROG Ally X Test conditions
Hogwarts Legacy 46 fps 37 fps 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in
Doom: The Dark Ages 35 fps 25 fps 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle 42 fps 34 fps 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in

These are manufacturer-reported averages under ASUS’s chosen test conditions. They show a meaningful uplift over the predecessor in those examples, but they are not independent laboratory measurements and do not establish that each game will hold the same frame rate on battery power or at a different preset.

Notebookcheck’s 1080p benchmark results

Notebookcheck reported a 14% advantage over the previous Ally X across its standard gaming benchmark suite. Individual titles varied considerably. Its recorded results at 1,920×1,080 illustrate the range:

Game Setting Upscaling Recorded result
Cyberpunk 2077 Ultra FSR off 28 fps
Baldur’s Gate 3 Ultra Not stated in the cited result 32.5 fps
Strange Brigade Ultra Not stated in the cited result 58.8 fps

Notebookcheck’s Cyberpunk 2077 power-and-preset run makes the settings trade-off especially clear. At 35W Turbo with FSR disabled, it measured 49.5 fps at 1080p Low, 40.5 fps at Medium, 31.9 fps at High and 28 fps at Ultra. Lowering the preset increased performance substantially, but even the Low result is tied to that review’s test system, driver state and scene.

Alan Wake 2: launching is not the same as looking good

Tom’s Hardware reported that Alan Wake 2, which its reviewer could not run on handhelds using the older Z1 Extreme platform, did run on the Xbox Ally X. The test used 720p display output, a 640×360 performance render resolution and FSR2. In the tested open-world scene, the game ran between 32 and 53 fps; in a subway area it reached a 60-fps cap.

The same review judged the image very blurry at those low render resolutions. This is a useful compatibility lesson: a game can launch and maintain a playable frame rate while still failing a reader’s image-quality standard. If you require sharp 1080p output, Alan Wake 2’s tested configuration is not equivalent to native 1080p gaming.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider illustrates power and scene differences

In Tom’s Hardware’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider test at medium settings and DirectX 12, the Ally X produced 64 fps at 720p and 45 fps at 1080p when plugged in. Unplugged, the reported results were 79 fps at 720p and 52 fps at 1080p. Those numbers come from that review’s particular scenes and settings; they should not be generalized to every title or interpreted as proof that battery operation is always faster.

What “demanding” means in practice

Graphically extreme open-world games and recent AAA releases are the most likely to need compromises. A lighter, older or more art-directed game may look excellent at 1080p, while a ray-traced or heavily streaming open world may need 720p output, aggressive upscaling or a 30-fps target. TechRadar highlighted the handheld’s strengths with more art-directed and less graphically extreme games.

Use three separate questions instead of a binary “can it run?” test:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Will it launch? Check the current PC requirements, launcher behavior and anti-cheat rules.
  • Will it hold a chosen frame-rate target? Look for a benchmark that states resolution, preset, power mode and upscaling.
  • Does the image still look acceptable? A low render resolution can raise fps while reducing clarity, as the Alan Wake 2 test demonstrates.

Recommended setup process for a demanding game

  1. Confirm the PC version’s requirements. Check the publisher’s current minimum and recommended specifications, required Windows version, storage space, launcher and anti-cheat notes. A Windows handheld is not automatically identical to an Xbox-console edition.
  2. Install the game and its launcher normally in Windows. The Xbox full-screen interface is an access layer; some games still open a separate launcher or require an account sign-in.
  3. Start at a sensible target. For a very demanding game, begin with 720p or 1080p output, a Low or Medium preset and a 30- or 40-fps cap rather than assuming Ultra and 60 fps.
  4. Set the render resolution separately from display output. A 1080p display can receive an internally rendered 720p or lower image. Record both values when evaluating image quality.
  5. Enable the game’s upscaler carefully. FSR2 or a similar option can improve performance, but lower render scales introduce softness, shimmering or ghosting. Compare Quality, Balanced and Performance modes instead of treating “upscaling on” as one setting.
  6. Choose power mode based on the situation. ASUS’s comparison used Turbo while plugged in. Battery operation can apply a different power limit, and performance may change with the selected mode.
  7. Test a repeatable scene. Walk through the same demanding area for several minutes and watch frame-time consistency, not only the highest number shown by an overlay.
  8. Adjust one variable at a time. Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections and view distance before dropping every setting to Low. If the game remains inconsistent, reduce render resolution or set a lower frame-rate cap.

Using AMD and Windows features

Windows Central recommends enabling AMD HYPR-RX and its associated game features for graphically demanding games. These are tuning options, not universal fixes. Results depend on the title, driver, selected feature and whether the game already uses its own upscaler or frame-generation technology.

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame count without making the underlying simulation respond like a native high-frame-rate game. Assess controller latency and frame pacing as well as the headline fps. If artifacts, uneven pacing or input delay appear, disable the feature and use a lower but more consistent native or upscaled frame rate.

Compatibility checklist before you buy or install a title

Because the Ally X runs Windows, compatibility is broad but not automatic. Check each game against these points:

  • Launcher: Does the title require a separate launcher, browser sign-in or always-online service?
  • Controller support: Does it recognize an integrated Xbox-style controller, or will you need keyboard and mouse input for menus or gameplay?
  • Anti-cheat: Some anti-cheat implementations can reject unusual environments or require specific driver and Windows configurations.
  • Graphics API: Verify whether the game expects DirectX 12, DirectX 11 or another API and whether current drivers support it properly.
  • Storage and updates: Large modern games need free space for installation, shader caches and patches. Allow room beyond the download size.
  • Community reports: Look for current reports that identify the exact handheld model, Windows build, driver, resolution, preset and power mode.

Compatibility reports age quickly. Firmware, graphics drivers, game patches and anti-cheat components can change results, so a report from an earlier build is evidence rather than a permanent guarantee.

Battery, heat and the 120Hz panel

The Ally X’s battery capacity is 80Wh, but that figure alone cannot predict demanding-game runtime. Workload, screen brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, graphics settings and power mode all affect consumption. ASUS distinguishes between operating modes and plugged-in testing in its performance comparisons, and no single dependable AAA runtime applies to every configuration.

For longer sessions away from an outlet, reduce the frame-rate target, use a lower power mode, cap refresh or frame rate when appropriate, lower brightness and choose a sensible preset. For maximum performance, plugged-in Turbo testing is the closest match to ASUS’s published comparison, but it is not a battery-life scenario.

How to interpret reviews and benchmark claims

Different reviewers answer different questions. PC Gamer called the Xbox Ally X the fastest handheld gaming PC it had tested in its comparison set at publication time. That is a relative editorial finding for its test pool and date, not evidence that the device equals a gaming laptop or desktop graphics card.

When reading any quoted result, capture all of the following:

  • Game version and test scene
  • Output and internal render resolution
  • Graphics preset and key custom settings
  • Upscaling or frame-generation mode
  • Power mode and plugged-in or battery status
  • Average, minimum or frame-time metric being reported

Combining numbers from ASUS, Notebookcheck and Tom’s Hardware into one average would be misleading because their methods, scenes and settings differ. A 28-fps 1080p Ultra result and a 49.5-fps 1080p Low result in Cyberpunk 2077 describe a settings trade-off, not a contradiction.

Who should consider the Ally X?

It fits players who accept tuning

The Ally X is a strong fit if you value a portable Windows library, want access to multiple PC storefronts and are comfortable choosing a preset, render scale and frame-rate cap for each demanding game. Its hardware can make titles that fail on weaker handhelds playable, sometimes with substantial image-quality concessions.

It may disappoint players who expect native 1080p at 60 fps

If your minimum requirement is a locked 60 fps at native 1080p with High or Ultra settings in every new AAA release, the cited results do not support that expectation. Cyberpunk 2077 at 28 fps in 1080p Ultra, Baldur’s Gate 3 at 32.5 fps in the same resolution and the low-resolution Alan Wake 2 configuration all show why a more flexible target is necessary.

Bottom line for “Will it run my game?”

The ROG Xbox Ally X can run demanding PC games, but the useful answer is a settings profile, not a yes-or-no label. Expect lighter or well-optimized games to fare better; expect the newest, most demanding releases to need lower presets, reduced render resolution, upscaling or a lower frame-rate target. Before deciding on a specific title, verify its current Windows requirements and compatibility notes, then use a benchmark that reports the same resolution, settings and power conditions you intend to use.
