Yes—provided the game is installed locally and supports offline play. Before disconnecting, sign in to the Microsoft account that holds your subscription, turn on Offline Permissions in the Microsoft Store, install every intended game and update, and launch each title once while online. ASUS says a logged-in Windows handheld can then run qualifying Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Game Pass games offline when the game was launched within the previous 14 days.
This does not make every Game Pass title playable without internet. Online multiplayer, always-online games, cloud gaming, remote play, and game modes that depend on a server still require a connection. The reliable way to prepare for travel is to test each installed game with Wi-Fi disabled before you leave.
What “offline Game Pass” means on the ROG Xbox Ally X
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a Windows gaming handheld, so there are two different ways to use Game Pass. You can install a PC game onto the handheld’s storage, or you can stream a supported game from the cloud. Only the first option can work without an internet connection.

A locally installed PC Game Pass title has its game files on the Ally X. After the Microsoft Store account and the game have been prepared online, a qualifying single-player title can usually start in airplane mode or with Wi-Fi disabled. The subscription and Windows account still have to pass the service’s offline checks, and the individual game must not require a server.

Cloud streaming
Cloud Gaming does not download the playable game to the handheld. The Ally X receives a video stream from Microsoft’s servers and sends your controls back over the network. It therefore needs an internet connection, a supported device, and an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Xbox remote play has the same fundamental limitation: it connects to another system and cannot supply offline play.
How to enable offline play before you travel
Complete this process while you have a reliable connection. Do it for every game you expect to use, not just for the Xbox app itself.
- Connect the Ally X and finish updates. Install Windows, Xbox app, Microsoft Store, controller firmware, and game updates while online. Download any expansion, language pack, texture pack, or other downloadable content that you intend to use.
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. Use the account that owns the Game Pass subscription or the game license. A Windows login belonging to a different account can leave the game installed but unable to verify entitlement.
- Turn on Microsoft Store Offline Permissions. Open Microsoft Store, select your profile picture, choose Settings, and enable Offline Permissions. This authorizes the Store on the handheld to validate eligible purchases and subscriptions without a live connection.
- Launch each game while online. Start every title you plan to play and reach its main menu or an equivalent playable point. This first online launch lets the game create local data and complete any account, licensing, or anti-cheat setup it needs.
- Allow cloud saves to finish synchronizing. Exit the game normally while connected and wait for any save or profile synchronization to complete. A save made only on another Xbox or PC may not be available on the handheld until it has synchronized.
- Test the exact travel setup. Turn off Wi-Fi, enable Windows airplane mode if appropriate, and start each game from the handheld. Try the particular campaign, save, and mode you expect to use. Reconnect afterward if you need to download anything else.
Xbox Wire summarizes the practical advice this way: “While many titles work best online, most single-player games run great without a connection.” The important qualification is that “most” is not “all”; support is determined by the title and by the mode you select.
The 14-day launch rule and the designated-device option
Recent-launch allowance
ASUS’s current ROG guidance says a logged-in Windows handheld can play qualifying Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Game Pass games offline as long as the game was launched within the last 14 days. Treat that as a requirement to refresh each game before a long trip, rather than assuming that one launch of the Xbox app prepares every title.
The 14-day figure is a documented allowance, not a promise that every game will wait exactly 14 days before asking for a connection. A title can impose stricter requirements, and a major update or changed account status can trigger another online check. Launching and testing close to departure gives you the clearest result.
Designating one device for offline permissions
ASUS also describes a separate option for designating one logged-in Windows handheld for more permanent offline permissions. Only one device per Microsoft account can hold that designation, and ASUS states that it can be changed three times per year. This is useful if the Ally X is your regular travel machine, but it does not override a game’s own always-online requirement or turn cloud streaming into a local install.
Because the designation is tied to the account, changing it can affect another Windows device that previously held the offline status. Make the change before travel, while online, and verify the Ally X rather than relying on the setting’s name alone.

Which Game Pass games work without internet?
There is no published percentage covering the entire Game Pass catalog. Offline behavior is established per game and, in some cases, per mode. Use this comparison when deciding what to install:
| Game or access method | Can it work offline? | What must be true | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locally installed single-player PC Game Pass game | Often yes | Offline Permissions enabled, game launched online, entitlement valid, and local files complete | Some titles still require a server or restrict particular modes |
| Locally installed game with online multiplayer | No for multiplayer | Internet connection, service availability, and any required online account | A single-player or offline mode may work if the developer provides one |
| Always-online title | No | Continuous or recurring connection to the game service | The game may stop at sign-in even when all files are installed |
| Cloud Gaming title | No | Game Pass subscription, supported device, and internet connection | Nothing is playable once the stream is disconnected |
| Xbox remote play | No | Network path to the console and the remote-play service | It depends on the console being reachable and powered as required |
| Xbox Play Anywhere title | Sometimes, for a local Windows install | The game must participate in Play Anywhere and be installed and prepared on Windows | Play Anywhere governs cross-device entitlement; it does not remove a game’s online requirements |
For an offline trip, favor campaigns and other self-contained modes. A game can be downloadable through Game Pass yet still reserve achievements, matchmaking, seasonal content, or progression services for online use.
Will downloaded games work on a plane?
They can, if you prepare the Ally X as an offline Windows PC rather than as a streaming client. Airline Wi-Fi is not a substitute for preparation: it may block gaming traffic, require a browser sign-in, or be too unreliable for cloud play. A locally installed, tested single-player game avoids those problems.
Use this pre-flight sequence
- Connect to home or another dependable network.
- Install the game, patches, and downloadable content.
- Open Microsoft Store and confirm Offline Permissions is on.
- Launch the game and load the save you plan to continue.
- Quit the game, disable Wi-Fi, and launch it again.
- Enter the intended offline mode and confirm that controls, saves, and required content work.
- Reconnect once more to synchronize the newest save before leaving.
If the title fails during step five or six, assume it will fail in the air. Do not wait until boarding to discover that the game needs a first-run download or an account prompt.
What still requires an internet connection
- Cloud Gaming: the game runs on Microsoft’s servers and is streamed to the Ally X.
- Remote play: the handheld must communicate with the console and remote-play service.
- Online multiplayer: matchmaking, peer connections, and hosted sessions need network access.
- Always-online games: the executable or the selected mode may require a live server before it reaches the menu.
- Server-dependent features: some games reserve progression, events, inventory, anti-cheat checks, or authentication for online use even when a campaign is installed.
- Uninstalled or changed content: a missing update, expansion, language file, or license refresh cannot be downloaded in airplane mode.
ASUS specifically warns that games requiring an online connection, including online multiplayer games, do not work offline and that not all game modes may be available without internet.

The game asks you to sign in
Reconnect the Ally X, verify that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app use the subscription account, and launch the game once online. Then close the apps normally, enable airplane mode, and test again. If another account purchased the game, that account’s entitlement may be the one being checked.
Offline Permissions is missing or will not stay enabled
Update Microsoft Store and Windows, sign out and back in to the correct account, and revisit Microsoft Store > profile picture > Settings. Make the change while online. If you recently designated another Windows handheld, check which device currently holds the account’s offline designation before changing it again.

The game opens but a mode is unavailable
That is usually title behavior rather than a handheld fault. Select the game’s campaign, local, or offline option. Multiplayer, live events, and server-hosted modes can remain unavailable while the rest of the installation works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA save or add-on is missing
Reconnect and let cloud saves finish synchronizing. Confirm that every required add-on and language pack is installed, then launch the game once more online. Test with Wi-Fi disabled after the download completes; offline mode cannot fetch a missing file.
An update appeared just before departure
Install it and repeat the offline test. Updates can change authentication behavior or invalidate the local launch state, so a game that worked last week should be retested after a major patch.
Storage planning for a long trip
Offline play consumes local storage because the complete game installation, patches, and any chosen downloadable content must be present. Remove optional high-resolution packs only if the game lets you do so without removing the mode you need. A compatible microSD card can provide additional space for locally downloaded games, but card capacity and compatibility should be checked for the exact Ally X model and your region before relying on it for travel.
Keep free space for updates. A nearly full drive can prevent a patch from installing even when the existing game would otherwise run offline. Download large updates at home, restart the game after updating, and repeat the airplane-mode test.

Licensing and device limits to understand
PC Game Pass is intended for compatible Windows devices. The subscription does not guarantee that every catalog entry has a Windows PC version or an offline-capable mode. Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating games and allows access across compatible Windows devices and Xbox consoles under one-device-at-a-time rules. It is a cross-device entitlement feature, not a blanket offline license.
Offline access also depends on the subscription or purchase remaining valid. If the account, subscription, or game license changes while the Ally X is disconnected, the device cannot learn about that change until it reconnects. For that reason, start travel with the account in good standing and avoid signing out of the prepared profile.
A practical offline checklist
- Game installed locally on the Ally X, not merely listed as cloud-playable.
- Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, game, and required DLC updated.
- Correct Microsoft account signed in.
- Microsoft Store Offline Permissions enabled.
- Each intended game launched online within the documented 14-day window.
- Cloud saves synchronized.
- Airplane-mode test completed for the exact game mode and save.
- Enough storage remains for unexpected updates.
- Any online-only titles removed from the offline plan.
The practical answer
The ROG Xbox Ally X can play downloaded Xbox Game Pass PC games without Wi-Fi, but only after online authorization and only when the specific game and mode support offline use. Prepare Offline Permissions, launch every game online, observe ASUS’s 14-day recent-launch guidance, and test with the connection disabled. Treat cloud gaming, remote play, online multiplayer, and always-online titles as internet-dependent.
