Yes, but only for the right kind of laptop replacement. The ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ are Windows 11 gaming PCs in handheld bodies. Either can be your only gaming computer for portable play, game streaming and occasional Windows work. Neither fully replaces a gaming laptop if you need a large built-in screen, a permanent keyboard and touchpad, sustained high-wattage performance, many ports, easy upgrades or consistently high settings in demanding AAA games.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is the more balanced purchase: it costs less, has an 80Wh battery and a more integrated Xbox-style interface. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the performance option, with a larger 8-inch 120Hz display, stronger graphics results and premium connectivity, but its $1,799 review price makes the value difficult to justify unless you find a sale.

What “replacing a gaming laptop” really means

A handheld can replace a laptop in one specific role: portable access to your PC and Xbox games without carrying a conventional computer. Both systems run Windows 11, so they can install desktop launchers, browsers, office applications and streaming tools. Connect a controller, headset or wireless accessories and they work like compact PCs rather than closed game consoles.

The compromise appears when you use them as a full desktop computer. Their screens are small, their built-in controls are not ideal for long typing sessions, and their processors and graphics chips operate within a handheld power and cooling budget. A gaming laptop can sustain higher wattage for longer, drive a larger panel and provide a keyboard, touchpad, multiple ports and more straightforward storage or memory upgrades.

The larger, sharper 16:10 screen gives the Claw 8 EX AI+ a more laptop-like viewing area, while the Ally X specification emphasizes its Xbox-focused software and battery capacity. Storage expansion is configuration-dependent on both products: check the exact model for microSD and internal-SSD support before buying.

AAA gaming performance away from a desk

The MSI has the stronger graphics ceiling in comparative testing, but neither handheld turns every new AAA game into a high-refresh experience at native resolution. Performance depends heavily on the selected power mode, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling and frame-generation options.

Real game results

PC Gamer’s comparative testing found the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ delivered a 20–40% gaming-performance uplift over the ROG Xbox Ally X in its tested games. The same review said the MSI cost just under 40% more in the United States. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p medium, the Ally X reached 42 average frames per second. The Claw produced 35 FPS in endurance mode and 51 FPS in its version 1.0 performance configuration. That spread shows why a power profile matters as much as the chip.

PC Gamer described Cyberpunk at roughly 40 FPS without upscaling as borderline. Black Myth: Wukong requires upscaling or frame generation for a comfortable result on these handheld-class systems. In practice, you should expect to tune each demanding game rather than select a universal “ultra” preset.

3DMark test ROG Xbox Ally X MSI Claw 8 EX AI+
Fire Strike 9,141 12,358
Time Spy 4,033 6,534
Port Royal 1,999 3,544

Tom’s Guide measured those results while reviewing the MSI at $1,799. TechRadar reported the same GPU scores and found the Claw ahead in graphics tests, while the Ally X was slightly ahead in Geekbench CPU scores. MSI claims an average performance advantage of 42% over Ryzen Z2 Extreme; that claim concerns MSI’s own comparison, while independent results show the advantage varies by game and setting.

These figures make the Claw the better choice when graphics performance is your first priority. They do not eliminate the laptop advantage in sustained cooling or high-wattage operation. A laptop with a discrete GPU still has more thermal headroom for long sessions and higher settings.

Battery life and plugged-in use

Both handhelds use an 80Wh battery, but the published evidence is not directly equivalent. ASUS reports up to 9.9 hours of light gaming and 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming for the Ally X. Its test conditions were 75% brightness, wireless enabled and online play; light gaming used 1080p low in Silent mode, while heavy gaming used Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p low.

MSI’s specification lists an 80Wh battery but does not provide a directly comparable independent runtime figure on the cited product page. Do not assume the Claw will match ASUS’s light-gaming number. Its faster graphics hardware and 120Hz display can change consumption, while endurance mode can reduce performance.

For travel, treat both as systems for shorter unplugged sessions, charging between locations or playing lighter games. For a long AAA session, carry the appropriate charger and expect to use a performance mode that increases heat, fan noise and power draw. A gaming laptop generally offers longer high-performance operation when connected to its charger because its cooling system and power supply are designed for that workload.

Screen, controls and everyday comfort

The Claw’s 8-inch 1920×1200 panel runs at 120Hz with variable refresh rate and has a typical brightness rating of 500 nits. The extra screen area helps with strategy games, desktop text and split-window work, and VRR can smooth frame-rate changes. The Ally X’s cited specifications do not establish a directly comparable panel size and resolution, so choose it for its software and overall balance rather than assuming screen parity.

Both devices place controls around the display, which is excellent for play from a sofa, bed or train seat. Neither provides the physical keyboard and touchpad that make a laptop comfortable for long documents, spreadsheets or precise pointer work. You can pair Bluetooth peripherals, but that adds hardware to carry. Hall-effect controls on the Claw are designed to avoid the conventional wear mechanism associated with analog-stick drift; they do not turn the handheld into a laptop input device.

Windows, Xbox and productivity

The Xbox full-screen experience on the Ally X and Xbox Mode on the Claw are intended to make Windows navigation more controller-friendly. They can simplify launching games, but the underlying operating system remains Windows. Driver prompts, launcher updates, account sign-ins, notifications and occasional desktop troubleshooting are still part of ownership.

Ports and the cost of a desk setup

The Claw has dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, giving it a strong foundation for external displays, fast storage and docking. The Ally X can also serve a desk setup through a compatible USB-C dock. In either case, a practical laptop-style workstation normally requires:

  • A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock with the display and USB connections you need.
  • An external monitor, because a handheld screen is small for all-day desk work.
  • A keyboard and mouse for typing and pointer control.
  • A charger capable of powering the handheld while peripherals are attached.

Those items are not included in the handheld’s headline price unless a particular bundle says otherwise. Add their cost before deciding that a handheld is cheaper than a laptop. If you already own a monitor and peripherals, the calculation is more favorable; if you are starting from nothing, a laptop may deliver a complete workstation with fewer pieces.

Storage and upgradeability

Storage support varies by exact configuration. Confirm whether the model you are buying includes the internal SSD capacity you need and whether its microSD slot meets your performance and capacity requirements. Large modern games can consume substantial space, so a small internal drive quickly becomes a management problem.

A gaming laptop usually offers clearer access to larger internal drives and, on some models, memory upgrades. Handheld upgrade paths are more constrained and can require opening a compact chassis. If you expect to keep many AAA games installed, include a compatible high-capacity storage accessory in your budget and verify that the chosen model supports it at the required speed.

Price and value

Tom’s Guide reviewed the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at $1,799 and judged it difficult to justify without a sale, despite calling it the best PC gaming handheld the reviewer had used. PC Gamer found it just under 40% more expensive than the Ally X in the United States while delivering a 20–40% uplift in its game testing. Prices and stock change, so treat those figures as review-period US references rather than permanent prices.

The Ally X is the lower-cost option in the comparison and adds a large 80Wh battery with an Xbox-oriented interface. The Claw asks for a substantial premium for its faster graphics results, 8-inch 120Hz display and dual Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. The premium is easiest to defend if you will play graphics-heavy games frequently and will use the larger screen or high-speed ports. It is harder to defend if you mostly play lighter games, stream from another PC or plan to spend most sessions at a desk.

How to use either handheld as a laptop substitute

  1. Choose the exact configuration. Confirm processor, display, SSD, memory, microSD and regional keyboard or charger details before ordering.
  2. Update Windows and device software. Install firmware, graphics drivers and controller updates before judging performance.
  3. Set a power profile per game. Use endurance or Silent modes for battery life and a performance mode when plugged in. Record the resolution, preset and upscaling option so comparisons are meaningful.
  4. Configure game launchers. Sign in to the stores you use, enable cloud saves and test controller mappings. The Xbox interface improves navigation but does not remove Windows launcher maintenance.
  5. Build the desk connection. Attach the dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse and charger. Confirm that the dock supplies enough power while the display and USB devices are active.
  6. Tune demanding games. Start at 1080p or the panel’s native resolution, then adjust shadows, ray tracing and texture settings. Use XeSS or another supported upscaler when a title needs it; Black Myth: Wukong is an example where upscaling or frame generation is necessary for a better experience.
  7. Plan storage. Keep the fastest internal space for games that benefit from it and use supported expansion for the rest. Check free space before installing large titles.
