No. A standard R36S running the Linux-based ArkOS firmware has no documented Nintendo 3DS emulator, and its RK3326 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 640×480 single-screen design are aimed at older consoles and selected native ports. Replacing the microSD card, adding a BIOS file or installing PortMaster cannot create a missing 3DS emulator.
If Nintendo 3DS is your goal, treat the R36S as the wrong class of device. You can still use it for the systems and ports ArkOS documents, but 3DS software requires a handheld whose operating system, processor and controls are explicitly built around 3DS emulation.
What the R36S is designed to run
The R36S is an inexpensive Linux handheld built around Rockchip’s RK3326 quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 3.5-inch 640×480 LCD. Its preinstalled ArkOS system organizes emulators, ROM folders and native Linux ports for older platforms. Dov Grobgeld’s programming README describes it as an Ubuntu Linux-based ArkOS handheld; that README was last edited on September 11, 2024.
Those specifications matter because emulation is not simply a matter of placing a game file on a memory card. An emulator must reproduce the original console’s CPU, graphics hardware, operating-system behavior, input devices and timing. The emulator then has to run fast enough on the host processor. ArkOS must also include a compatible core and a launcher configuration for the system.

| R36S characteristic | Documented detail | Why it matters for 3DS |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Rockchip RK3326, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 | Designed for lower-power retro emulation rather than demanding modern handheld emulation |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM | Leaves limited headroom for a complex 3D emulator, operating system and game |
| Display | 3.5-inch, 640×480 LCD | Provides one small screen, while 3DS software expects two displays and a touchscreen |
| Operating system | Linux-based ArkOS | Only the emulator cores and ports supplied or supported by ArkOS are available |
| Storage | microSD card | Stores software and saves; changing capacity does not add processing capability |
The ArkOS emulator and ports inventory does not list Nintendo 3DS. That omission is decisive: there is no documented 3DS system entry or 3DS emulator core for the standard R36S software setup.
Why a 3DS ROM cannot run by itself
A ROM is data, not an emulator
A Nintendo 3DS game file contains software intended for Nintendo’s hardware. It does not contain the processor, graphics renderer, memory map, operating-system services or input translation needed to execute that software on a different computer. On ArkOS, a ROM is launched only when the system has a compatible emulator core and a configured platform entry.
Because the documented ArkOS inventory has no 3DS core, copying a file with a 3DS-related extension to a ROM directory does not add support. At best, the file will be ignored or shown as an unknown item. It cannot be transformed into a playable title by renaming it.
The hardware is also a poor fit
The RK3326’s four Cortex-A35 cores and 1 GB of RAM are suitable for many earlier systems, but 3DS emulation requires substantially more work than running a simple 2D console emulator. A 3DS emulator must translate the handheld’s ARM processors, graphics pipeline, memory behavior and system services while drawing a 3D scene in real time. The R36S specification and the available ArkOS documentation provide no evidence that this workload is supported.

No independent frame-rate study or compatibility percentage is published for 3DS on the R36S. It would therefore be misleading to promise a particular speed, game list or “tweak” that makes the platform viable.
The screen layout is a separate obstacle
Every 3DS game is designed around two displays: a top screen and a lower touchscreen. The R36S has one 640×480 screen and no built-in touchscreen. An emulator could theoretically combine, resize or switch between screens, but that would still require a functioning 3DS core and a practical control mapping. ArkOS documents no such arrangement for this device.
PortMaster is not Nintendo 3DS emulation
PortMaster installs games or game engines that have been compiled to run natively on Linux handhelds. A native port uses the R36S’s own processor and operating system; it does not recreate Nintendo 3DS hardware. Examples in a PortMaster catalog may resemble console games, but resemblance is not evidence that the original 3DS version is being emulated.

What a real port contains
- Executable Linux software built for the handheld’s ARM environment.
- Assets or data files that the port is legally allowed to use.
- A launcher entry and configuration appropriate to ArkOS.
A PortMaster package can therefore add a supported Linux game or engine, but it cannot add a Nintendo 3DS emulator that ArkOS does not document.

Why “3DS PortMaster” claims are misleading
Videos and downloads sometimes use “3DS port,” “3DS emulator” or similar wording to attract attention. Before trusting one, check whether it identifies a real emulator core, names the supported operating system and explains the controls for both screens. A file that merely copies a launcher, BIOS or ROM does not establish compatibility. The available first-party R36S and ArkOS documentation contains no 3DS PortMaster support.
How other systems perform on the R36S
Product documentation describes results for several systems as dependent on the individual game and settings. That is different from a blanket promise that every title works.
| System or category | Documented position | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 | Results depend on the game and settings | Expect title-by-title variation rather than universal compatibility |
| PlayStation Portable | Results depend on the game and settings | Some games may be usable while demanding titles can struggle |
| Nintendo DS | Results depend on the game and settings | The R36S is not the same as a 3DS-capable dual-screen handheld |
| Dreamcast | Results depend on the game and settings | Compatibility is not guaranteed for every release |
| PlayStation 2 | Documented as unsupported | A microSD upgrade or launcher change does not alter that limitation |
| Nintendo 3DS | No emulator or system entry documented in ArkOS inventory | There is no supported 3DS path on a standard R36S |
The Nintendo DS line in that table should not be confused with Nintendo 3DS. They are different consoles with different hardware, software requirements and display features. A device that can launch selected DS games does not automatically gain 3DS support.

Replacing the microSD card
A larger or replacement microSD card can provide more space for legally obtained games, saves and ports. It can also be useful if the original card fails. Storage capacity does not increase CPU performance, RAM, graphics capability or screen count, so it cannot make 3DS emulation possible.

Adding a BIOS file
Some emulators require console firmware or BIOS files. A BIOS supplies low-level data to an emulator that already exists; it is not an emulator itself. Since ArkOS has no documented 3DS core for the R36S, adding a 3DS BIOS cannot create the missing software layer.
Installing Citra or Lime3DS
Citra and Lime3DS are names associated with Nintendo 3DS emulation projects. The question is not whether a package can be copied onto the card, but whether a build supports the R36S’s ARM hardware, Linux environment, graphics drivers, memory limits, controls and two-screen interface. The R36S and ArkOS documentation reviewed for this device does not establish an installable, working Citra or Lime3DS configuration. Treat claims that a simple package install enables 3DS as unverified unless they provide reproducible, device-specific documentation.
Changing ArkOS settings
Emulator settings can improve a game that is already supported by reducing resolution, changing frameskip or selecting another renderer. Settings cannot add an emulator core that is absent from the firmware. They also cannot provide a second physical display or touchscreen.
What a handheld needs for practical 3DS emulation
If 3DS games are the deciding requirement, evaluate a different device against these criteria before buying or installing anything:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Documented emulator availability: The operating system should list a maintained 3DS emulator or core for the exact processor and operating-system combination.
- Processor and graphics headroom: Look for hardware recommended by the emulator project, not merely a high-sounding core count. 3D rendering and instruction translation need sustained performance.
- Adequate RAM: The emulator, operating system, shaders and game all share memory. The R36S’s 1 GB should not be treated as a target specification for 3DS.
- Two-screen controls: A usable layout needs a way to display both screens and interact with a touchscreen or a mapped substitute.
- Thermal and battery design: A device that can briefly run an emulator may throttle when warm. Reviews should identify sustained behavior rather than a short demonstration.
- Firmware support: Check update history, controller mapping, graphics-driver support and recovery instructions for the exact model.
- Legal game sources: Use game files and system software obtained in a manner permitted where you live.
Do not infer compatibility from a device’s ability to run N64, PSP or DS software. Those systems demonstrate that the handheld can emulate some older platforms, not that it can reproduce the 3DS architecture.
How to assess a video or download claiming 3DS support
- Identify the exact hardware revision and ArkOS version shown. An unbranded clone or a different handheld may look similar but use different components.
- Look for a documented emulator core and a clear installation path from the project or ArkOS documentation.
- Check whether the demonstration shows both screens, touchscreen actions and a complete game session rather than a menu or static splash screen.
- Verify that the software is built for the R36S’s ARM Linux environment and does not require a different operating system or processor.
- Be cautious of downloads that bundle unknown executables, copyrighted ROM collections or requests to disable security protections.
A launcher icon or a renamed ROM is not proof of emulation. Reliable evidence must connect the exact R36S hardware, its ArkOS build and a functioning 3DS emulator.
Legal limits for 3DS ROMs and system files
The seller’s product guidance states: “As for game ROMs, the legal stance is that you’re responsible for ensuring you own the original copies of any games you play.” That is a responsibility statement, not a universal legal rule for every country.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCopyright exceptions, format-shifting rules, protection circumvention and the treatment of firmware differ by jurisdiction. Owning a physical game may not answer every question about making or downloading a digital copy, and it does not authorize sharing copies with other people. Avoid unauthorized downloading, uploading and distribution. Use only game files and system software you are legally entitled to use, and obtain local legal advice if your situation depends on a specific country’s exception.
Decision guide
Buy or keep the R36S for its documented strengths: a compact Linux interface, older-console emulation and selected native ports. Do not buy it expecting Nintendo 3DS support, and do not treat a replacement card, BIOS file or PortMaster package as a hardware upgrade. For 3DS, choose a handheld with documented emulator support, sufficient performance and controls designed for two-screen play.
