Short answer: A PS5 cannot play original PS1 or PS3 discs. A PS5 equipped with a disc drive can play supported PS4 discs, while the original PS5 Digital Edition cannot accept any disc. For a physical PS4 collection, the disc-drive model is the straightforward choice; an official add-on drive works only with specified newer model groups.

PS5 disc compatibility at a glance

Backward compatibility depends on three separate questions: which PlayStation generation the disc belongs to, whether your PS5 has disc hardware, and whether the individual game is supported in the PS5 software environment. A disc that fits physically is not automatically playable.

Disc generation PS5 disc support What you need
PS1 No The original console, a supported re-release, or another platform
PS3 No The original PS3, a supported re-release, or another platform
PS4 Yes, for supported titles A PS5 model with a disc drive; the disc must remain inserted while you play

That distinction is important when buying a console. A disc-drive PS5 gives you access to supported physical PS4 games, but it does not turn the system into a universal PlayStation disc player. PS1 and PS3 discs remain outside the PS5’s supported formats.

Can a PS5 play PS1 discs?

No. An original PlayStation game disc cannot be played directly in a PS5. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that PlayStation-format, PlayStation 2-format, and PlayStation 3-format software cannot be played from a disc. “PlayStation-format” includes the original PS1 generation.

Installing a PS1 disc, copying its files, or inserting it into a PS5 with a disc drive does not create a supported game installation. The disc-drive hardware is designed to read supported PS5 and PS4 software, not to emulate every earlier PlayStation generation from its original media.

Ways to play a PS1 game instead

  • Use the original PlayStation hardware with the original disc.
  • Use an official or otherwise supported re-release when that specific game has been made available for a newer platform.
  • Use another platform that explicitly supports that title and format.

Availability varies by game and region, so owning a PS1 disc does not by itself provide a digital entitlement on PS5.

Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?

No. PS3 discs are not supported by PS5 consoles. Sony’s PlayStation Support documentation identifies PS3 discs as a backward-compatibility limitation, and a disc-drive PS5 will not launch a PS3 game from its original Blu-ray disc.

This is separate from the PS5’s ability to run many PS4 games. The two generations use different software environments, so a PS3 disc cannot be treated as an older version of a PS4 disc. If you want to play a PS3 title, you need the original PS3, a supported re-release, or another platform that offers that particular game.

Why a disc drive does not solve PS3 compatibility

The drive answers only the physical-media question: whether the console can read a disc. The console also needs a supported game format and software implementation. PS5 backward compatibility was built primarily around PS4 software; it does not provide general native support for PS3 disc software.

Can a PS5 play PS4 discs?

Yes, provided the PS5 has a functioning disc drive and the title is among the supported PS4 games. Sony describes the PS5 as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. At launch, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino said on October 9, 2020, that “more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” That was a launch-era coverage figure, not a guarantee that every PS4 title or every feature behaves identically today.

Some PS4 games may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5, and Sony warns that certain PS4 functions may be unavailable. Compatibility therefore applies to the game software, not just the disc’s physical shape.

What happens when you insert a PS4 disc

  1. Insert the PS4 game disc into the disc-drive PS5.
  2. When the game appears on the home screen, select its game hub.
  3. Allow the console to install the required game data. If an update is offered, install it before starting or when prompted.
  4. Start the game from the PS5 home screen after installation completes.
  5. Keep the original PS4 disc inserted whenever you play. The disc serves as proof that you own the physical copy; installation does not remove that requirement.

The disc is not converted into a permanent digital license. Deleting the installed game data can require another installation, but the same disc is still needed to launch the game afterward.

Does the PS5 Digital Edition have a disc drive?

The original PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and cannot use PS4, PS3, or PS1 discs. A physical PS4 library therefore requires a PS5 model with a drive unless your particular Digital Edition belongs to a newer model group that supports Sony’s optional drive accessory.

Optional drive compatibility

Sony documents a CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive for specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Compatibility is model-specific: check the exact CFI model number printed on the console or its packaging before buying the accessory. Do not assume that every Digital Edition, or every regional revision, accepts the same drive.

Even when the add-on is supported and installed, it changes only the eligible console’s disc capability. It does not add PS1 or PS3 disc support; the practical benefit is access to supported PS4 and PS5 physical software.

Which PS4 games are backward compatible?

The broad rule is that the overwhelming majority of PS4 games work on PS5, with Sony’s launch communication placing coverage above 99 percent of more than 4,000 PS4 games. The percentage should be read with its date and scope attached: it described the PS5 launch situation and does not promise identical performance, features, or availability for every title now.

Individual games can still be exceptions. A title may fail to run, display an error, or lose a PS4 feature on PS5. Compatibility also does not mean that a PS4 disc automatically receives a PS5-native version, enhanced graphics, a higher frame rate, or a free upgrade. Those are separate, title-specific decisions by the publisher.

Three checks to make before buying a used PS4 disc

  • Generation: Confirm that the package contains a PS4 disc, not a PS3 or PS1 release.
  • Title support: Check the game’s current PS5 compatibility information and any known exception before paying.
  • Hardware: Make sure your console has a built-in drive or is one of the specified newer Digital Edition groups that supports the CFI-ZDD1-series accessory.

These checks prevent the most common mismatch: a supported PS4 game paired with hardware that cannot read discs, or an unsupported older-generation disc paired with a console that can read other formats.

Disc-drive PS5 versus Digital Edition for a physical PS4 collection

Decision factor PS5 with disc drive PS5 Digital Edition
Physical PS4 discs Supported for compatible titles Not available on the original Digital Edition
PS1 discs Not supported Not supported
PS3 discs Not supported Not supported
Disc retained during play Required for PS4 disc games Not applicable without disc support
Add-on drive option Drive already present Only specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups support the CFI-ZDD1-series drive

Choose the disc-drive model if you already own PS4 discs, expect to buy physical PS4 games, or want the simplest setup with no model-eligibility check. Choose a Digital Edition only if your library is digital or you have verified that your exact newer model supports the official add-on drive and its setup requirements.

How format, hardware, and software exceptions interact

Format support

PS1 and PS3 are outside PS5 disc compatibility. PS4 is the older disc format supported in the PS5 ecosystem, subject to title exceptions.

Hardware support

A PS4 disc needs a physical drive. A disc-drive PS5 has one; the original Digital Edition does not. Eligible newer Digital Edition groups can use the specified CFI-ZDD1-series accessory, but model verification comes first.

Software support

Even with the correct disc and hardware, the game must be supported. Sony notes that some PS4 functions may be unavailable and that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior. The safe expectation is compatibility with possible title-level limitations, not perfect parity with a PS4 console.

Troubleshooting a PS4 disc that will not play

The console does not react to the disc

  • Confirm that the disc is actually a PS4 release. PS1 and PS3 discs cannot be made playable through troubleshooting.
  • Confirm that your PS5 is a disc-drive model, or that an eligible add-on drive is correctly supported by its CFI model group.
  • Remove and reinsert the disc, then look for the game icon on the PS5 home screen.

The game appears but will not start

  • Allow the installation to finish before launching.
  • Install any update the console offers.
  • Leave the disc inserted; an installed copy still requires the physical disc for each play session.

The game runs with missing features or errors

That can be a compatibility limitation rather than a defective disc. Sony warns that some PS4 functions may be unavailable and that some games may behave unexpectedly on PS5. Check the specific game’s current support notes and use the PS4 version on original PS4 hardware if a required feature is not available on PS5.

You own a Digital Edition and want to use discs

Identify the console’s CFI model number first. Only the specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups are documented for the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. If your model is not in those groups, a physical PS4 collection requires a separate console with supported disc hardware.

What backward compatibility does not mean

  • It does not mean every PlayStation generation’s disc works in the same drive.
  • It does not turn a PS4 disc into a digital purchase that can be played without the disc.
  • It does not guarantee that every PS4 feature, mode, peripheral, or behavior is identical on PS5.
  • It does not guarantee a PS5 upgrade. A supported PS4 game may simply run as its PS4 version.
  • It does not make an original PS1 or PS3 disc usable through a system update or an add-on drive.

Bottom line for each disc generation

For PS1 discs, use the original console, a supported re-release, or another platform; PS5 cannot launch the disc. For PS3 discs, the answer is also no, regardless of whether the PS5 has a drive. For PS4 discs, use a disc-drive PS5, install or update the game when prompted, and keep the disc inserted whenever you play. If you are considering a Digital Edition, verify the exact CFI model before relying on the CFI-ZDD1-series accessory, and remember that the accessory does not add PS1 or PS3 support.
