Yes, but not usually at native 1080p or 1200p with high or ultra settings. The Legion Go S can deliver a 1080p-class picture in demanding games when you render internally at a lower resolution and use AMD FSR, a handheld preset, or frame generation. The Ryzen Z2 Go Windows model often needs 720p–900p internal rendering to stay near 30 frames per second, while the Ryzen Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration has more performance headroom.

That distinction matters because the Go S has a 1920×1200, 120Hz screen, but the panel’s native resolution is not the same as the resolution the game must render every frame. Current benchmarks show that native 1200p ultra-quality rendering can collapse to single-digit frame rates in the Z2 Go, whereas a carefully tuned 720p or 800p image can be playable and still be presented at a 1080p-class output.

What “1080p gaming” means on the Legion Go S

On a handheld PC, people use “1080p gaming” to describe two different targets:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native rendering: the game engine draws every frame at 1920×1080, or at the Legion Go S panel’s 1920×1200 resolution.
  • 1080p-class output: the game renders internally at 720p, 800p, or another lower resolution, then an upscaler such as FSR reconstructs an image for the display.

The second approach is the practical one for demanding releases. Lowering internal resolution reduces the work sent to the integrated GPU; FSR then rebuilds detail so the final image occupies the display at a higher output resolution. It is still fair to call that 1080p-class play, but it should not be confused with native 1080p quality.

The Legion Go S display is 8 inches, 1920×1200, and 120Hz. Lenovo’s CES 2025 specification also lists up to 32GB of LPDDR5X-7500 memory, a 55.5Wh battery, and an approximate weight of 730g. Those specifications make a high-refresh display possible, but they do not guarantee that a demanding game can feed it 120 full-resolution frames per second.

Why the processor configuration changes the answer

Ryzen Z2 Go with Windows

The Z2 Go is the lower-headroom configuration in the cited testing. Lenovo’s PSREF lists it as a four-core, eight-thread processor with a 3.0GHz base frequency and up to 4.3GHz maximum frequency. It shares system memory with the integrated graphics, so demanding games can become GPU-limited at high resolutions and CPU-limited in busy scenes.

Windows also consumes resources for the desktop, background services, updates, and launcher software. That does not make Windows unusable, but it leaves less of the handheld’s fixed power and memory budget for a game than a tightly focused gaming environment. In practice, the Z2 Go is best treated as a 720p–900p internal-rendering machine for current AAA games, with 1080p-class output supplied by an upscaler.

Ryzen Z1 Extreme with SteamOS

The Z1 Extreme SteamOS model has substantially more headroom in the cited Doom: The Dark Ages results. The supplied specifications do not establish a core count, clock range, or exact memory configuration for that model, so those details should not be inferred from the Z2 Go figures.

What is established is performance: the Z1 Extreme configuration ran Doom: The Dark Ages at about 25fps at 1200p Medium without FSR, about 35fps with FSR, and 56–61fps at 800p with FSR. That makes a stable 30fps target much easier than on the Z2 Go and gives the Z1 Extreme more room for higher internal resolution or image-quality settings.

Benchmark results: native resolution versus tuned settings

The following results show why one blanket “1080p performance” number would be misleading. TechRadar’s review tested several games at different presets and resolutions; Tom’s Guide separately reported a configuration split in Doom: The Dark Ages.

What to expect in the most demanding games

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest warning against equating the screen’s resolution with playable native performance. TechRadar recorded only 3fps at Ultra 1200p and 6fps at Ultra 720p. Those figures are far below a playable target, even after reducing resolution, because the Ultra preset remains too demanding for that test configuration.

For this type of game, start by abandoning Ultra, use a handheld or medium preset, and enable an upscaler. If the game offers frame generation, treat it as an optional second step after establishing a playable base frame rate; it cannot turn a 3fps render into responsive gameplay.

Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong improved from 19fps at 1200p Medium to 39fps at 720p Medium in TechRadar’s measurements. That near-30fps difference illustrates the value of reducing internal resolution. A 720p internal image with FSR can therefore be a more sensible starting point than native 1080p or 1200p, especially on the Z2 Go.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Doom shows both how tuning helps and how much the APU matters. TechRadar measured 37fps at 1080p with the handheld preset and FSR Balanced. Tom’s Guide found the Z2 Go at about 15fps at 1200p Medium, rising to about 27fps with frame generation. On the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model, FSR lifted 1200p Medium from about 25fps to 35fps, while 800p with FSR reached 56–61fps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical lesson is to choose a frame-rate target first. For roughly 30fps, 1080p output with an internal 720p–900p render may work on the Z2 Go when the preset is appropriate. For 50–60fps, 800p with FSR is the more realistic Z1 Extreme target in this example.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Both games show a consistent resolution penalty even when the visual preset remains Highest. Assassin’s Creed Mirage ran at 32fps at 720p and 21fps at 1200p. Shadow of the Tomb Raider fell from 30fps at 720p to 16fps at 1200p. These results support using lower internal resolution before sacrificing every other setting.

Recommended Z2 Go settings for 1080p-class output

Use this sequence when a demanding game opens with an unplayable frame rate:

  1. Select a performance-oriented power mode. Test while plugged in first, because the available power budget can differ from battery operation. The cited reviews do not identify a universal battery frame rate for every game.
  2. Set the internal resolution to 720p or 800p. Move toward 900p only if frame rate remains comfortably above your target. The Z2 Go results in Black Myth: Wukong, Mirage, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider all show why 1200p is expensive.
  3. Enable FSR. Start with Balanced, as in TechRadar’s Doom test. If the image is too soft, try a higher-quality FSR mode only after confirming that performance remains acceptable.
  4. Use the game’s medium or handheld preset. Ultra and Highest settings are not dependable at native resolution on the Z2 Go. Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, and crowd detail first if the game exposes individual controls.
  5. Cap the frame rate at a sustainable value. A steady 30fps is generally preferable to a fluctuating result that repeatedly drops below it. If the game is already rendering near 30fps, frame generation may raise the displayed counter, but it does not replace the need for a stable base render.
  6. Adjust output resolution separately from render resolution. Let the game or operating system present the reconstructed image at the display’s chosen output while keeping the internal render lower.

When the Z1 Extreme model is worth choosing

Choose the Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration if your priority is demanding local games rather than a Windows-specific application library. In the cited Doom test, it reached about 35fps at 1200p Medium with FSR and 56–61fps at 800p with FSR. That is materially more headroom than the Windows Z2 Go result of about 15fps at 1200p Medium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Z1 Extreme is not a promise of native ultra-quality 1200p at high frame rates. Its own 1200p Medium result without FSR was about 25fps, so upscaling remains useful. Its advantage is that you can spend that extra performance on a higher internal resolution, a steadier frame rate, or more demanding effects before reaching the same limit.

How power, patches, and drivers affect results

Review numbers should be treated as a range, not a permanent specification. A graphics-driver update can improve or reduce performance; a game patch can change shader compilation, CPU load, or upscaling behavior; and a different power mode can alter clocks and fan behavior. Battery operation can also impose a different power limit from plugged-in play, but the supplied benchmarks do not provide a complete battery table.

For a meaningful comparison, keep the same resolution, preset, upscaler mode, power setting, and game version. Record an identical scene or built-in benchmark rather than comparing a quiet corridor with a crowded combat sequence.

Should you buy the Z2 Go for demanding games?

  • Choose the Z2 Go if you accept 720p–900p internal rendering, medium or handheld presets, and a roughly 30fps goal. It can produce convincing 1080p-class output when tuned, but native ultra settings are not its strength.
  • Choose the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model if demanding AAA games are your main use and you want more room for 800p 50–60fps play or 1200p with FSR around 30fps.
  • Do not choose either configuration expecting universal native 1200p ultra performance. Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth: Wukong, Mirage, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Doom all show substantial penalties at the panel’s highest resolution.

Lenovo described the Legion Go S at CES 2025 as offering “the performance, adaptability, and versatility needed to excel both in the game and in academic fields like STEM.” For gaming, that adaptability means selecting the right render resolution and upscaler for each title rather than leaving every slider at its maximum.
