Yes, for many mixed creative workflows—but the display is the key compromise. In Creative Bloq’s hands-on review, Glen Southern found the 13-inch iPad Air M4 capable for digital art, 3D sculpting and video editing, with 12GB of unified memory providing useful headroom. It supports Apple Pencil Pro and has a P3 IPS display, but its 60Hz LCD does not match the iPad Pro’s OLED contrast or 120Hz refresh rate. The Air is a credible creative tablet; whether it is the right one depends on how much your work benefits from the Pro’s screen.
What the artist-focused review found
Creative director Glen Southern’s Creative Bloq review, published October 6, 2026, evaluates the 13-inch iPad Air M4 for digital art, 3D work and video editing. Southern, who says he has used iPad Pros for professional creative work, focused on large Procreate canvases, complex Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush sculpts, and other demanding applications. The reviewed 13-inch unit had 12GB of unified memory.
Southern considered the M4 and that memory capacity meaningful headroom for 2D and 3D applications. His observation about Procreate was more specific: he did not perceive a performance difference from his older iPads. That is a subjective impression in one app, not evidence that the Air M4 is no faster, and the review does not provide controlled app-by-app timings or rendering benchmarks.
What independent performance testing adds
TechRadar reports that its 13-inch Air M4 handled photo and video editing, multitasking and background video export smoothly. In its Geekbench 6 testing, it recorded 3,745 single-core and 13,342 multi-core points. The same reviewer’s tested M3 Air scored 3,023 and 11,716, respectively, while its M2 Air scored 2,591 and 10,046. These are reviewer-run general processor benchmarks, not measurements of a particular artist’s canvas, sculpt or export workflow.

Is the display good for drawing and color work?
Apple specifies the 13-inch Air M4’s display as a 2732-by-2048-pixel, 264-ppi LED-backlit IPS Multi-Touch panel. It supports P3 wide color and True Tone, is fully laminated, has an antireflective coating and is rated at 600 nits. Apple also lists Pencil hover and support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Those specifications, together with Southern’s positive assessment of Pencil Pro as precise and expressive in Creative Bloq’s tested Procreate guide, make the Air a well-equipped drawing surface.
P3 support is not a guarantee of color accuracy for professional proofing: the cited specifications and reviews do not establish measured calibration accuracy. If accurate color matching is critical, treat the published display specifications as a feature list, not a colorimeter report.

Where the Air differs from the Pro
The Air’s display is limited to 60Hz. The Pro models offer OLED and 120Hz ProMotion, according to TechRadar and Creative Bloq’s guide. That difference matters most if you prioritize darker blacks and contrast, or prefer the smoother visual response of a faster-refresh screen while moving the Pencil. It is a screen trade-off, not a finding that the Air cannot handle demanding creative apps.
How well does it fit a desk-based creative setup?
Apple lists the USB-C port as supporting charging, DisplayPort and USB 3 up to 10Gb/s. The Air can output to one external display at up to 6K resolution and 60Hz. That gives it a route into a desk setup as well as use as a portable drawing tablet. The specifications do not establish compatibility with every hub, external drive, audio interface or app-specific workflow, so check the exact peripherals and software you plan to use.

For screen area versus portability, the choice is straightforward: the 13-inch model gives you more workspace; the 11-inch model is smaller and lighter. TechRadar lists the product family at 617g for the 13-inch and 460g for the 11-inch. Apple’s cited specification page here covers the 13-inch model, so confirm the precise details for the size and region you intend to buy.
Which iPad Air M4 configuration makes sense?
Match screen size to how you work, then choose storage for your projects and media. TechRadar lists 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations for both sizes. Large source files and video projects can make storage selection important, but the available evidence does not quantify how much space a particular workflow needs.

- Choose 13 inches if a larger on-device canvas or timeline is more valuable than lighter travel weight.
- Choose 11 inches if portability and a smaller bag footprint matter more than maximum screen area.
- Choose storage around your active projects, including the files and media you expect to keep locally.
Compare the total system cost, not just the tablet: include the Pencil you intend to use and any optional keyboard. Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) compatibility. Prices vary by market and date, so verify current local pricing before deciding.

When is the iPad Pro worth considering?
Consider the Pro if OLED contrast or 120Hz motion is central to your drawing experience, or if display characteristics are a major part of your decision. The Air already has the M4, Pencil support and a capable display for many creative tasks; the evidence here does not show that every artist needs a Pro for demanding 2D or 3D work.

Southern’s view in Creative Bloq’s tested Procreate guide captures the value distinction: “Another amazing piece of creative hardware from Apple. But if you aren’t a professional creative or power user then this is overkill in most cases.” That is his buying opinion, not a universal threshold; your own apps, screen preferences and total setup cost should determine the choice.
