Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 (model RC74XA) is a Windows 11 Home handheld PC, not a console limited to an Xbox-only operating system. You can install compatible PC Game Pass titles, download Steam games, and use the Epic Games Store launcher. The important qualification is that compatibility follows the Windows PC version of each game: a console-only Xbox title does not automatically become installable, and cloud access, catalogs, saves and performance depend on the game, subscription, region and hardware settings.
The short answer: one Windows handheld, several game libraries
ASUS describes the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a Windows 11 device that brings Xbox and major PC storefronts into one library. That architecture is what makes the three services work together. Windows can run the Xbox app, Steam and the Epic Games Store as separate PC applications, while the Xbox-oriented full-screen interface can present installed games in one place.
That unified interface does not merge ownership rules. You still sign in to the account that owns a game, keep each launcher’s update and anti-cheat requirements, and check whether a title has a Windows PC build. Think of the X20 as a compact Windows gaming PC with an Xbox-focused shell rather than as a portable Xbox console.

How Game Pass works: local PC installation versus cloud streaming
Local play through the Xbox app
The X20 runs Windows 11 Home, so it can use the Windows Xbox app. A PC Game Pass title that offers a Windows PC version and supports the device can be downloaded to the internal SSD or another supported storage location and played without streaming. Local play uses the X20’s processor, graphics hardware, memory and storage; once installed, it does not depend on a continuous cloud connection for rendering.

Game Pass is a catalog subscription rather than a purchase of every game in the catalog. Microsoft changes the catalog, and the available games differ by plan, country, device and date. A listing that appears for console or cloud may not include a Windows download. Check the game’s entry in the Xbox app for a PC install option before assuming it can be installed locally.
The United States specification page for the X20 lists two months of Xbox Game Pass Premium as a promotional offer. That is an offer for an eligible market, not a permanent entitlement or a worldwide bundle; ASUS says eligibility and offers vary by market. The catalog included with any plan can also change.
Cloud gaming is a separate path
Cloud gaming sends the game’s video output to the handheld and returns your controls over the internet. It can provide access to supported console games that do not have a Windows PC build, but it is not the same as downloading those games. You need a qualifying Game Pass subscription, a supported device and a suitable network connection. Latency, bandwidth, service availability and the game’s cloud rights affect the result.

If the game has a Windows PC edition in the Xbox app, the X20 can install and run that edition subject to its requirements. If it is console-only, local installation is not guaranteed; cloud play may be available if the subscription, region, device and title all support it.

Steam support on the ROG Xbox Ally X20
Steam is a Windows PC storefront, and Windows 11 Home allows you to install its desktop client normally. ASUS’s FAQ states that the ROG Xbox Ally runs games that run on the Windows platform. For the X20, that means a Steam purchase with a Windows build can be installed and launched like it would be on another Windows PC.
Steam compatibility is still game-specific. Before installing, check the game’s Windows system requirements, controller support and online-service requirements. A title may launch through an additional publisher client, require a particular anti-cheat driver, or expect a keyboard and mouse for menus. Those are software and input considerations rather than a restriction imposed by Steam itself.
Storage is another practical limit. The X20 has a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, but the operating system and installed applications consume part of that capacity. Large modern games can occupy a substantial portion of the remaining space. The device also includes a microSD Express reader, which gives you an expansion route; whether a particular game performs well from removable storage depends on its loading pattern and the card used.

Epic Games Store support
The Epic Games Store also provides a Windows launcher, so it can be installed on the X20 alongside the Xbox app and Steam. Sign in to your Epic account, select a game with a Windows PC version, choose an install location and let the launcher download it. Xbox’s Windows handheld guidance and ASUS’s FAQ both identify Epic as one of the PC storefronts available on these devices.

Installing the Epic launcher does not bypass a game’s own requirements. Some games start a publisher launcher, require a separate account, or use anti-cheat and online services that must be installed and updated. If a game is offered only for another operating system or only as a console release, the Epic Windows launcher cannot make it compatible.
Does the X20 play Xbox console games or only PC Game Pass games?
The answer depends on the edition. Xbox branding on the handheld does not mean that every Xbox console title has a native Windows build. Look for a PC version in the Xbox/Microsoft Store or in the game’s supported PC launcher. A title marked for console only cannot be installed locally on Windows simply because the X20 has an Xbox interface.
Cloud gaming expands the selection, but it remains streaming. It requires the subscription and network conditions described above, and the cloud catalog can differ from both the console and PC catalogs. If uninterrupted offline play matters, choose a title with a Windows installation instead of relying on the cloud.

Cross-device progress is strongest for games in the Xbox Play Anywhere program. Xbox says the program covers more than 1,000 games, and ASUS notes that most Play Anywhere titles can synchronize cloud saves and progress between supported Xbox and Windows devices. Achievements and entitlement behavior follow the program’s rules.

That does not create universal cross-save for Steam or Epic purchases. A game may implement its own account-based cross-progression, may keep saves local to each launcher, or may offer no synchronization at all. Check the individual game’s save and cross-progression documentation before moving between the X20 and another platform. The fact that a game is available in more than one store is not, by itself, a promise that saves transfer.
Hardware context for choosing settings
The X20’s specifications provide useful headroom, but they do not establish a frame rate for every game. The official 2026 specification identifies these relevant components:

Use the individual game’s recommended settings as the starting point. Resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target, ray tracing, power mode and battery state can change performance substantially. The specifications establish the platform; they do not guarantee a particular setting or frame rate for a specific Steam, Epic or Game Pass title.
How to install and organize the three services
- Finish Windows setup. Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to Windows and install available Windows and driver updates. Restart if Windows requests it.
- Check for S mode. ASUS notes that using Game Pass on a PC requires leaving Windows S mode. If the X20 is in S mode, open Settings > System > Activation, choose the option to switch out of S mode and complete the Microsoft Store confirmation. Do this only if S mode is actually enabled; switching out is a one-way change.
- Install the Xbox app and sign in. Open the Xbox app from the Start menu or Microsoft Store, sign in with the account holding the Game Pass subscription, and open a game’s page. A PC install button indicates that a Windows download is available for your plan and region.
- Choose a storage location. In the Xbox app, Steam and Epic, review each install location before downloading large games. Keep enough free space for updates and temporary files rather than filling the SSD completely.
- Install Steam. Download the Windows Steam client from Steam’s official distribution channel, sign in, select a game in your library and confirm its Windows requirements and controller support before installing.
- Install Epic Games Store. Install the Windows Epic launcher, sign in, select a compatible PC game and accept any additional publisher launcher or anti-cheat installation it requests.
- Organize the library. The Xbox-oriented full-screen experience can aggregate games from Xbox and major PC storefronts, but leave the original launchers installed. They remain responsible for ownership checks, updates, cloud saves and account authentication.
Common failure points and practical fixes
The game appears in Game Pass but has no install button
Confirm that you are viewing the PC version, that your plan includes PC access, and that the title is available in your region and on your device. If only a console or cloud option is shown, local Windows installation is not offered through that listing.

A Steam or Epic game installs but will not launch
Check that the launcher and Windows are current, then review the game’s Windows requirements, controller support and anti-cheat or publisher-launcher instructions. Some games need a first launch with a keyboard, mouse or additional account sign-in. Those requirements remain in force on a handheld.
The game runs but performance is poor
Lower the game’s resolution or graphics preset, reduce demanding effects such as ray tracing, select an appropriate frame-rate target and connect power when using a high-performance mode. The 120Hz display can show high frame rates, but demanding games may need a lower target to balance image quality, heat, noise and battery life.
There is not enough storage
Uninstall games you no longer play, remove unused launcher downloads and reserve space for updates. The 1TB SSD is not entirely available to games because Windows and applications occupy part of it. A compatible microSD Express card can expand capacity, although loading behavior varies by game and card.

Verify the subscription, region and title support first. Then use a stable, low-latency network, avoid congested connections and remember that cloud play cannot provide offline access. A native Windows installation is the better route when the game supports it and local performance is acceptable.
What the X20 can and cannot promise
- It can promise a Windows PC platform: Windows 11 Home supports the Xbox app, Steam, Epic Games Store and ordinary Windows software.
- It cannot promise every Xbox console game locally: local installation requires a Windows PC edition; otherwise, investigate supported cloud access.
- It can combine libraries in one interface: aggregation improves access, but individual launchers, accounts, updates and anti-cheat systems still operate underneath.
- It can synchronize supported Xbox progress: Xbox Play Anywhere titles are the clearest case, while Steam and Epic cross-save behavior is decided by each game.
- It cannot promise identical performance across games: the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD, 1080p 120Hz OLED and 80Wh battery establish the hardware context, not a universal frame-rate result.
For someone choosing one handheld for PC Game Pass, Steam and Epic, the decisive fact is the operating system: the X20 is a Windows 11 PC. Verify the edition, launcher, subscription and save policy for each game, and decide between local installation and cloud streaming before you download.
