Syncthing can replace Google One only for the files you deliberately sync between devices you control—not for Google One’s full storage and Android backup features. It is free, open-source software that keeps selected folders in sync across connected devices. It does not provide its own cloud storage, and it does not automatically reproduce Google’s account-based phone backup and restore service.
If your goal is to copy photos or documents from a phone to a computer, Syncthing may fit, provided both devices and enough storage are available. If you rely on Google to restore phone settings, app data, call history, or messages after replacing a phone, Syncthing is not a like-for-like substitute.
Can Syncthing replace Google One?
It depends on what you use Google One for. Syncthing is a file synchronization program: you choose folders and devices, and those devices exchange changes. Google One storage is associated with a Google Account and can be used across Google services; Android also offers a separate account-based backup and restore workflow. The two are different service models, not interchangeable versions of the same feature.

| Question | Syncthing | Google Account / Android backup |
|---|---|---|
| Where is data kept? | On the participating devices you connect. Syncthing does not keep a central copy in its own cloud. Syncthing | Android backup data is uploaded to Google. Google says some data is additionally encrypted with the device screen lock; Google Photos content and carrier MMS media are exceptions to that screen-lock encryption. Google Android Help |
| How do copies move? | Devices exchange files when they are online at the same time; Syncthing scans for changes and propagates them. Syncthing FAQ Synchronization documentation | Backups are associated with a Google Account and can be restored during setup on a compatible Android phone. Google Android Help |
| What do you provide? | Connected devices, local disk space, folder configuration, monitoring, and a separate recovery plan. | A Google Account and available account storage. Google’s Android Help currently states that an account includes 15 GB at no charge; more storage is available through Google One. Google Android Help |
| What can be recovered? | Synced folder contents, plus versions only if file versioning is configured. Versioning is off by default and has defined limits. Syncthing file versioning documentation | Android backup coverage varies by data type and app; restoration does not guarantee every app’s data or state. Google Android Help |
A useful test is to list what your Google One subscription is actually doing for you. If you need only a second copy of chosen files on your own computer, Syncthing may cover that part. If you also depend on Google storage across services or on Android’s device restore, those needs remain separate.

How do I automatically back up files from my phone to my computer?
Syncthing can keep selected files synchronized between a phone and a computer, but the source material does not establish a universal Android folder setup or installation path. The exact folders available depend on your device and configuration, so verify what your chosen client can access before relying on it.
- Choose the files and destination. Identify the phone folders you want copied and a destination folder on a computer or server with enough available disk space.
- Connect the devices in Syncthing. Add the devices you control and configure the chosen folders for synchronization. Syncthing uses device authentication and TLS-protected communication, according to the project site.
- Keep the receiving device available. The phone and receiving computer must be online together to exchange files. A computer that is asleep, shut down, or otherwise unavailable cannot receive changes at that time. Syncthing FAQ
- Check that files arrive and continue to monitor the setup. Syncthing detects filesystem changes and periodically rescans; watcher-detected changes may take time to appear on the other device. Confirm the expected files are present rather than assuming a copy completed. Synchronization documentation
- Plan a separate recovery copy. A synced copy is not independent if deletion, damage, or an unwanted change reaches every participating device. Use a separate backup or snapshot approach for important files.
An external drive can add local capacity to the receiving computer or server. It does not by itself make the arrangement an independent backup: if the drive is simply another live sync destination, changes and deletions may still propagate.
Is Syncthing a backup or just sync?
Its primary behavior is synchronization. Syncthing propagates file changes between configured devices, which is useful for keeping copies aligned but creates a recovery risk: an accidental edit or deletion can spread too.
Syncthing offers file versioning strategies, including trash-can, simple, staggered, and external-command approaches. Versioning is disabled by default, must be configured per folder and device, and uses storage on the device retaining those versions. Its documented behavior covers changes received from other devices, not local edits made on the archiving device. Syncthing file versioning documentation
For important data, treat versioning as one recovery layer rather than a complete backup. Keep an independent copy or snapshot that is not exposed to the same live synchronization changes, and periodically check that you can retrieve files from it.

What happens if I delete a file in Syncthing?
A deletion is a change and can propagate to the other devices in the folder. If file versioning is configured, a device may retain certain changes it receives, but the feature is off by default and its scope is limited. Without versioning or another backup, synchronization alone does not promise a recoverable earlier copy. Syncthing file versioning documentation
What if two devices edit the same file?
When devices make conflicting edits, Syncthing can create a conflict-named copy rather than silently treating both versions as one. That copy is handled as an ordinary file and can propagate to other devices, so review it and decide which version to keep. Synchronization documentation

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Syncthing work without cloud storage?
Yes. Syncthing exchanges data across your devices rather than uploading it to a Syncthing cloud account. The project describes it as a continuous file synchronization program and says communication is protected by TLS with device authentication. Syncthing Devices still need a route to communicate and must be online together to exchange files; the receiving copy needs storage on a computer, server, or other participating device you control. Syncthing FAQ
What Android backup features would remain separate?
Google’s Android Help says a Google Account includes 15 GB of storage at no charge. Its phone backup documentation covers app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, with some additional data tied to specific Google apps. Not every app can back up or restore all its data, and restoring to a lower Android version can be incomplete. Google Android Help
Syncthing synchronizes configured files; the cited documentation does not establish that it can reproduce Android’s account-based device restore, restore app state, or cover every phone folder automatically. If those are part of your recovery needs, account for them separately before ending a storage subscription.
