Moving bikes from a roof rack to a hitch-mounted carrier can improve fuel economy in some conditions, but there is no established MPG gain that applies to every car. In Consumer Reports’ 2020 comparison, a hitch rack performed better than a roof rack at 65 mph on a 2019 Nissan Altima and a 2019 Toyota RAV4. The result is useful directionally, not a promise for your vehicle.

Why rack position can affect fuel economy

A rack and the bicycles it carries can change a car’s aerodynamic drag. Roof-mounted gear sits in the airflow above the vehicle; a rear-mounted carrier puts the load in a different position. A rack and bikes also add weight. The balance of these effects depends on the rack’s shape and position, the vehicle body, whether bikes are aboard, speed, wind, route, and driving pattern.

As Science Buddies explains, “Air resistance is always in the opposite direction of motion, and it gets stronger as the car moves faster.” That helps explain why an aerodynamic difference may matter more at highway speeds, but it does not yield a universal MPG figure for a rack switch.

What the tests show—and what they do not

Consumer Reports tested a 2019 Nissan Altima and a 2019 Toyota RAV4 at 65 mph, comparing roof and hitch racks both empty and loaded with two adult-sized bicycles. Its summary says the loaded rack affected the sedan more than the SUV, and that even an empty roof rack had a large penalty on the sedan. It characterized only the empty hitch rack as having a negligible impact. Read Consumer Reports’ test summary.

Those observations apply to the named vehicles and test conditions. They do not establish how many MPG a different car will gain, nor do they isolate every factor that changes real-world consumption. A separate TOUR comparison examined ten hitch racks and five roof racks in 2012 and noted that fuel consumption depends on vehicle type; its broad, approximately 15% statement should not be treated as a prediction for an individual driver. See TOUR’s carrier comparison.

Which carrier setup makes sense for your car?

Option Practical trade-offs What to check
Roof rack Keeps the rear of the car available, but bikes must be lifted high and roof clearance becomes a concern. Vehicle roof-load limit, compatible rails or fittings, and clearance in garages or under barriers.
Hitch-mounted carrier Often easier to load than a roof carrier; a compatible towbar is required, and rear access may be affected. Vehicle and rack compatibility, total carrier capacity, per-rail limit, and access to the tailgate or trunk.
Trunk or other rear carrier May avoid lifting bikes onto the roof, but fit and rear access vary with the car and carrier design. Compatibility with the specific vehicle and the carrier maker’s installation and load instructions.

Roof and rear carriers are common options, but the right choice is not purely an MPG decision. Consider loading effort, installation and removal, rear access, clearance, and whether your vehicle already has compatible roof rails or a towbar. Cyclingnews also highlights fit and usability as important parts of choosing a carrier. See Cyclingnews’ guide to car bike racks.

How to compare fuel use on your own car

A before-and-after comparison can be informative if you keep the conditions as similar as practical. Science Buddies describes comparing fuel economy without a roof rack and with one installed, then repeating the comparison with cargo. Its project outline separates no-rack, empty-rack, and loaded-rack conditions. See the Science Buddies project explanation.

  1. Choose comparable trips. Use the same vehicle, route, approximate speed, and driving pattern where possible. Note major differences such as strong wind or traffic.
  2. Record the no-rack baseline. Use the same fuel-economy measurement method for each comparison.
  3. Measure the empty rack separately. This distinguishes the rack’s effect from the added load of bicycles.
  4. Repeat with the usual bike load. Keep the number and type of bikes consistent; Consumer Reports’ test used two adult-sized bicycles.
  5. Compare repeated runs, not one trip. Real-world conditions vary, so a single tank or drive may not reveal a dependable difference.

Check weight limits before carrying bikes

For pedelecs and other heavy bikes, check both the carrier’s total capacity and each individual rail’s limit. For a roof setup, also observe the vehicle’s roof-load limit. Allianz Center for Technology’s July 2018 findings recommend rear transport of pedelecs based on its tests and advise checking fastenings during travel pauses. Its summary states: “The maximum total permissible weight of the rack indicated by the manufacturer must always be observed.” Follow current instructions from both the vehicle and rack manufacturers. When switching is worth considering

A hitch carrier is worth considering if your car is compatible, you often carry bikes, and easier loading or a potentially smaller aerodynamic penalty matters to you. If you rarely use the carrier, removing it when it is not needed can avoid carrying an unnecessary rack; Consumer Reports noted that hitch racks are easier to remove. If a hitch setup is impractical, the evidence does not mean a roof rack is automatically unsuitable—fit, safe loading, clearance, and manufacturer limits still matter.
