Yes—Ryu and Scorpion could appear in the same movie in principle, but no Street Fighter–Mortal Kombat crossover film has been officially announced. Such a project would require a new, negotiated agreement between the separate rights and production groups behind the two franchises. That agreement would have to settle character use, screenplay and designs, actor likenesses, financing, distribution, ratings, sequels, television windows, marketing and merchandise.
What is actually official right now?
The two properties are being developed through separate corporate and production chains. Capcom and Legendary announced a live-action Street Fighter film and television project on April 5, 2023, with Capcom saying it would jointly produce the projects with Legendary. Capcom’s September 5, 2025 announcement said filming had started, that Capcom and Legendary were jointly financing the film, and that the listed theatrical release date was October 16, 2026. That announcement identified Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li among the principal characters and cast. Paramount’s official film page also markets the Street Fighter movie as a theatrical release.
Warner Bros. Games identifies Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition as a current NetherRealm Studios release and has tied promotional skins to the Mortal Kombat II film. Warner Bros. describes NetherRealm as a Warner Bros. studio. None of those official announcements says that a Street Fighter character, Mortal Kombat character or crossover screenplay is being developed.

Why a crossover is legally possible
Copyright and trademark owners can authorize a new work that combines characters from different franchises. A crossover is therefore not blocked by the fact that the characters originated in separate games. The obstacle is obtaining compatible permissions and commercial terms from every party whose rights are implicated.
Street Fighter approvals would involve Capcom and the parties producing, financing and distributing its current film. Mortal Kombat approvals would involve Warner Bros., NetherRealm and the film-side rights holders involved in the Mortal Kombat productions. The exact contracting entities can vary by territory and by the rights being licensed. The public announcements do not disclose the private contract clauses, option periods or approval percentages.
A corporate connection, common investor or distribution relationship would not automatically create a crossover license. Capcom would still have to approve the use of Street Fighter characters, names, logos, story elements and designs. The Mortal Kombat rights holders would separately have to approve their characters and their use in a feature film. That conclusion follows from the separate official production announcements; it is not a quoted term from a published contract.

Who would have to approve a Mortal Kombat versus Street Fighter movie?
A realistic approval map would include the following decisions before cameras roll:
- Character and story rights: Capcom for Street Fighter material, and the relevant Warner Bros./NetherRealm and Mortal Kombat film rights holders for Mortal Kombat material.
- Production participation: the companies currently attached to each film would need to decide whether they are co-producers, licensors, financiers or merely approving parties.
- Screenplay and design approvals: both sides would review dialogue, costumes, logos, powers, fatalities, fighting styles and how each character is portrayed.
- Performer and likeness permissions: contracts would need to cover actors already attached to a film, any new performers and the use of recognizable likenesses in advertising, games and merchandise.
- Distribution and financing: the parties would allocate production costs, theatrical territories, release windows, streaming or television rights, sequel options and control of marketing.
- Consumer products and games: action figures, collectibles, apparel, downloadable content and any tie-in game would require a separate approval and revenue framework.
Those categories describe the business work a crossover would require. They do not mean that any of those negotiations are occurring publicly.

Would a Paramount–Warner relationship make it easier?
It could simplify a business conversation if the companies already have a workable distribution or licensing relationship, but it would not remove the underlying rights problem. Distribution is permission to release a particular project; it is not ownership of every character that a distributor has handled elsewhere.
Capcom’s approval would remain necessary for Street Fighter content, while the Mortal Kombat rights holders would retain approval over their characters and film use. A shared platform, parent-company relationship or prior deal might reduce transaction friction, but only a signed crossover agreement could authorize the combined movie.
What would the creative agreement have to solve?
The franchises have different identities. Street Fighter’s current film marketing emphasizes recognizable arcade fighters, martial-arts action and a broad theatrical audience. Mortal Kombat is associated with graphic violence, supernatural fantasy and fatalities in its games and films. Combining them would require deliberate choices rather than simply placing two rosters in one tournament.
Tone and rating
The filmmakers would have to choose a violence level acceptable to both licensors and the intended audience. A PG-13 version could imply off-screen or less graphic fatalities, while an R-rated version could preserve more of Mortal Kombat’s explicit brutality but narrow the potential audience. No rating has been announced for a crossover because no crossover film has been announced.
Reason for the meeting
The story would need a credible mechanism that brings the worlds together: a tournament, dimensional conflict, shared threat or another premise approved by both sides. The plot would also need to explain why characters with different supernatural rules, histories and power scales can interact without making one franchise feel subordinate.

- VIDEO GAME NOSTALGIA: Street Fighter II - Licensed from Capcom
- COLLECTOR GRADE: Premium packaging
- SIZE: 1:12 scale, 6” tall
- AGE: 13+
- READY TO PLAY: Includes interchangeable heads, hands, and accessories.
Canon policy
The contract and marketing would need to state whether the film is part of Street Fighter continuity, Mortal Kombat continuity, both, or neither. An explicitly non-canon event can give writers more freedom, but it still requires clear labeling so viewers do not mistake the crossover for a sequel or reboot.
Signature abilities and fatalities
Ryu’s techniques, Scorpion’s powers, character costumes and named finishing moves are recognizable intellectual-property elements. The parties would negotiate which moves appear, how they are staged and whether a move can be reused in trailers, toys, games or later films.
How the rights and business decisions would be divided
| Decision | Street Fighter side | Mortal Kombat side | What a crossover contract must specify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Characters, names and logos | Capcom and its film partners | Warner Bros., NetherRealm and relevant film rights holders | Licensed elements, territories, term and approval process |
| Financing | Capcom and Legendary are jointly financing the announced Street Fighter film | Not stated for a crossover | Budget shares, recoupment, losses and sequel funding |
| Theatrical release | Paramount’s official page markets the Street Fighter film theatrically | Distribution arrangement for a crossover is not stated | Releasing studio, territory splits, dates and marketing control |
| Canon | Not established for a crossover | Not established for a crossover | Standalone event, one continuity, both continuities or non-canon status |
| Rating and violence | Current marketing stresses martial-arts action and broad theatrical appeal | Known for graphic supernatural violence and fatalities | Target rating, permitted imagery and cut-approval rights |
| Merchandise | Hasbro has announced Street Fighter film-timed figures, toys and collectibles | Products would require separate Mortal Kombat approvals | Product categories, licensees, royalties and promotional use |
How large are the audiences?
The franchises are commercially substantial, although the published figures use different definitions and dates. Capcom reported that cumulative Street Fighter series shipments exceeded 49 million units as of December 31, 2022. Warner Bros. Games reported in 2025 that Mortal Kombat had sold more than 100 million units worldwide. Separately, Warner Bros. Discovery’s current corporate profile reports more than 76 million Mortal Kombat videogame units.
The two Mortal Kombat numbers should not be added together or presented as one total. The 100-million figure is described as a franchise-wide total from Warner Bros. Games in 2025, while the 76-million figure is a videogame-unit figure in a Warner Bros. corporate profile with a different scope and date. None of these statistics proves that a crossover will be profitable; they indicate why both licensors would treat the characters as valuable assets.

If the companies chose to pursue the idea, the development path would normally proceed through several negotiated gates:
Rank #4
- VIDEO GAME NOSTALGIA: Street Fighter II - Licensed from Capcom
- COLLECTOR GRADE: Premium packaging
- READY TO PLAY: Includes alternate hands, head, and kick fire accessory
- SIZE: 1:12 scale, 6” tall
- Age 13+
- Concept approval: producers would circulate a premise, character list, tone and proposed audience to both rights groups.
- Rights audit: lawyers would identify every character, logo, performance, design, game element and prior film obligation that the screenplay uses.
- Term-sheet negotiation: the parties would set ownership, financing, approvals, distribution, revenue participation, sequel options and merchandising principles before a full long-form agreement.
- Screenplay and packaging: writers, directors and performers could be attached subject to both licensors’ approvals and any existing actor contracts.
- Rating and standards review: the parties would test the violence, language and supernatural material against the target rating and regional classification systems.
- Production and marketing approvals: costumes, visual effects, trailers, posters, toys and tie-in game content would pass through the agreed approval process.
- Release and accounting: the contract would govern theatrical windows, later television or streaming use, international versions, audits and revenue reporting.
The sequence is a practical framework, not a report that any studio has begun these steps.
Answers to the questions fans ask most
Can Ryu and Scorpion be in the same movie?
Yes, if Capcom and the Mortal Kombat rights holders license them together and the production obtains all related approvals. There is no legal rule requiring characters from separate game franchises to remain permanently separate.
Does Warner Bros. own the rights to Street Fighter?
No public material cited here identifies Warner Bros. as the owner of Street Fighter. Capcom announced the current Street Fighter film project with Legendary, while Warner Bros. identifies NetherRealm as its studio and controls the Mortal Kombat side of its current film and game business.
Has a crossover been announced?
No. The official announcements cited for this article describe separate Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat productions and releases. They do not announce a combined film.
Would it be PG-13 or R?
It is unknown. The choice would be a development and licensing decision balancing Mortal Kombat’s graphic identity against Street Fighter’s broad theatrical positioning. A rating cannot be inferred from either franchise’s game history.
What fans should watch for in a real announcement
A genuine crossover announcement would normally identify more than a cast rumor or a social-media image. Look for named rights holders, a production or financing partner, an officially described screenplay or story, a distributor, and a statement about whether the project is canonical. The announcement should also make clear whether the title is a feature film, television special, game promotion or merchandise collaboration.
Until those details appear, the accurate position is that a crossover is commercially and legally possible but remains hypothetical. The current official record supports separate projects, not a shared movie universe.
