Usually, a confirmed cryptocurrency transfer cannot be reversed. Recovery is possible only in limited situations: investigators trace the funds, the assets reach an identifiable and cooperative exchange before they are withdrawn, and that exchange can freeze the account through its own controls or in response to lawful process. A private recovery company cannot seize cryptocurrency or guarantee that you will get it back.
Act quickly, preserve every identifier, report through official channels, and stop sending money to anyone who promises a guaranteed recovery. The same public ledger that makes a transfer difficult to undo can give investigators a usable trail, but a trail is not the same as identifying or apprehending the person who controls an address.
What “recovery” can mean
People use recovery to describe several different outcomes. Distinguishing them prevents false expectations and helps you ask the right organization for the right action.

The FBI states that “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency” (September 3, 2024). A company may perform lawful analysis or help prepare evidence, but it cannot create government authority by calling itself an agent, investigator or recovery office.

Why tracing works—and where it stops
Cryptocurrency transactions are typically recorded on a public ledger called a blockchain, as the Federal Trade Commission explained in 2021. A transaction hash, sending address, receiving address, asset, amount, network and timestamp can usually be viewed by anyone with the relevant network tools. That transparency lets investigators follow movements between addresses and identify the point at which funds enter a service that keeps customer records.
An address is not automatically a name. It may be controlled by an individual, a business, a software wallet, a hardware wallet or a custodial exchange. Even when several addresses can be linked to the same service, investigators still need records, subpoenas, warrants or cooperation to connect an address to a person. A traced transfer can therefore establish where the assets moved without proving who controlled the destination.
Tracing also becomes harder when funds move through overseas exchanges or jurisdictions with weak or slow anti-money-laundering controls. A foreign service may delay a response, require formal legal requests from the relevant country, or be outside the practical reach of the investigators handling your complaint. These limits explain why a visible trail does not guarantee recovery.
When an exchange may freeze the funds
The most practical recovery opportunity is often a custodial exchange, broker or payment service that receives the stolen assets while they are still in the account. Such a service can place a hold under its fraud and compliance procedures, preserve records, and prevent withdrawal while it assesses the report. It may also act after receiving a request from law enforcement or a court.

Freezing is not automatic. The service may need a transaction hash, destination address, proof that you owned the sending account, a police or IC3 complaint number, and a formal request from an authorized agency. It may decline to discuss another customer’s account because of privacy rules. If the recipient has already converted the asset, transferred it elsewhere or withdrawn it, a freeze at that exchange may no longer help.
Contact both sides when possible: the exchange from which the transfer was sent and the service that appears to control the destination address. Use only contact details obtained by navigating to each company’s official website yourself. Do not rely on a phone number, email address or login link supplied by someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
What to do in the first hours
- Stop the loss. End communication with the suspected scammer and send no further cryptocurrency, “tax,” verification payment, release charge or legal fee. Do not negotiate for a refund through the same channel.
- Secure accounts from a clean device. Change passwords for your email, exchange and financial accounts; use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication. If a wallet or connected application may be compromised, revoke suspicious token or spending approvals where the wallet and network support that function. Contact the wallet or exchange provider through its independently verified official site.
- Capture the transaction evidence. Record every transaction hash, source and destination address, asset, amount, blockchain network and timestamp. Save exchange statements, deposit and withdrawal records, screenshots, chat exports, emails, domains, phone numbers, usernames and profile links. Keep originals unedited and make a separate working copy for notes.
- Notify the sending service. Ask its fraud or security team what evidence it requires, whether it can flag the destination, and how an investigator should submit a request. The service may not be able to reverse the transfer, but a prompt report can help preserve account records.
- Notify any identifiable receiving service. Provide the destination address and hash, explain that the transfer is linked to fraud, and ask where law enforcement should send legal process. Do not impersonate an investigator or threaten staff; inaccurate claims can delay review.
- Report to authorities. File a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or contact a local FBI field office. Also file an FTC ReportFraud complaint and notify local police where appropriate. Include the complete identifiers and every contact made by a purported recovery service.
Speed matters because an exchange can act only while it still controls the account and the assets remain traceable. The FBI says its IC3 Recovery Asset Team has helped freeze more than $1 billion for cybercrime victims, but that figure describes assistance with freezes, not a promise that an individual complaint will succeed.

How to assemble a usable evidence packet
Investigators and exchange compliance teams work faster when the facts are organized consistently. Create a chronological table with one row per event and retain the original files separately.

- Transaction data: network name, hash, sending and receiving addresses, asset type, quantity, timestamp with time zone, and the exchange or wallet used.
- Payment context: the date you bought or transferred the asset, account receipts, bank or card records, and the approximate value and currency at the time.
- Scammer identifiers: usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, domains, wallet addresses, social profiles and advertised company names.
- Conversation history: complete exports of chats and emails, including messages that contain instructions, promises, threats or requests for additional payments.
- Ownership proof: exchange account details, identity-verification records, deposit confirmations and any prior statements showing that the funds were yours.
- Security actions: when passwords were changed, multifactor authentication enabled, approvals revoked, accounts closed and providers contacted.
Never publish a seed phrase or private key in a complaint, email or chat. A legitimate investigator does not need your secret recovery words to verify a blockchain transfer.
How to report without creating a second problem
Use the official IC3 and FTC reporting portals and the contact channels published by your exchange. Type the agency or exchange address into your browser or use a bookmark you created previously; do not click a link in an unsolicited message. If someone claims to be an exchange employee, call the number listed on the exchange’s own site and ask whether the message is genuine.
Include any follow-up from the scammer after your initial loss. Recovery fraud often targets victims whose details have already been shared in a complaint, social post or leaked customer list. Tell the agency that a second party contacted you, what it promised, what it requested and how much you paid, if anything.
Law-enforcement investigations do not require a victim to pay an investigator’s “release fee,” “international tax,” “blockchain validation charge” or similar payment. A request for money is a warning sign, not evidence that a case is progressing.

Recognizing cryptocurrency recovery scams
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center warned on August 24, 2023: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds as this may be another scam.” Fraudsters may find victims through social media, comments on complaint forums or fake legal and government websites.

Evaluating legitimate professional help
A licensed digital-forensics or cryptocurrency-investigation professional may help organize evidence, analyze transactions or coordinate with counsel. That work is different from having authority to freeze or seize assets. Before sharing data or signing a contract, compare providers against these questions:

Do not hire a provider solely because it displays a case number, government logo, celebrity endorsement or a list of addresses. Ask for a verifiable business identity and references you can check independently, and have a lawyer review unfamiliar terms before you pay.
What the major loss figures show
The scale of cryptocurrency fraud explains why criminals target victims again. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. The FBI reported more than $5.6 billion in cryptocurrency-fraud losses in 2023, a 45 percent increase from 2022. Those totals are aggregate reports, not an estimate of the amount recoverable in any single case.

They also explain why agencies emphasize complete reporting. A detailed complaint can connect addresses, phone numbers, domains and payment patterns across victims, even when an individual victim cannot identify the person behind an address.
Protecting assets that remain
After reporting, review every account that shared a password, email address, device or wallet connection with the incident. Change passwords again if a device was infected, update operating systems, remove unknown browser extensions and review exchange withdrawal addresses and API keys. Ask your exchange whether it can place temporary withdrawal limits or enhanced monitoring while the account is investigated.
Hardware wallets, offline seed storage and security guides can reduce the risk of a future compromise, but they cannot retrieve cryptocurrency that has already left your control. Treat them as preventive measures, not recovery services. Keep seed phrases offline and never enter them into a website, support form or remote-access session.
What outcome to expect
A successful case may involve a warning or freeze at an exchange, preservation of records, a lawful seizure and eventual restitution. Another case may produce only a documented trail because the funds were withdrawn, moved to an uncooperative jurisdiction or linked to an address that cannot be attributed to a person. Either result is better served by an accurate, prompt report than by paying an unverified intermediary.
