Sometimes—but recovery is never guaranteed. A public blockchain can preserve a trace of stolen funds, yet getting cryptocurrency back usually requires fast reporting, evidence that connects the theft to specific transactions, a trace to an exchange or issuer that can control the assets, and cooperation from investigators, prosecutors or a court. A private recovery company cannot order a seizure, and an immutable transaction cannot simply be reversed.
What “recovery” can mean
People use “recovery” to describe several different outcomes:
- An exchange or stablecoin issuer places a hold on an account or tokens before the thief cashes out.
- Investigators seize cryptocurrency under a warrant and hold it while a criminal case proceeds.
- A court orders a defendant to transfer assets or freezes property during civil litigation.
- Forfeited assets are returned through a victim-compensation or remission process.
Those outcomes depend on the blockchain involved, how quickly the theft is reported, whether the funds reach a controllable custodian, the ability to identify the recipient, and the jurisdictions involved. No authoritative source establishes a universal recovery percentage. A successful trace is evidence, not a guarantee that money will be returned.

What to do immediately after a crypto theft
Do not send more money to the suspected criminal, and do not confront the person if investigators may be pursuing the case. Preserve evidence before deleting accounts, changing phones or resetting devices.
- Stop further transfers. Disconnect compromised wallet extensions, revoke suspicious token approvals where possible, and move any remaining assets to a newly created secure wallet. Never share a seed phrase or private key while seeking help.
- Record every transaction. Save the transaction hash or transaction ID, sending and receiving addresses, blockchain network, asset type, amount, and the date and time shown by your wallet or exchange. The FBI says transaction details are the most important information a victim can provide.
- Capture the surrounding evidence. Keep wallet screenshots, exchange account details, chats, emails, websites, phone numbers, usernames, payment instructions, receipts and identity information supplied by the suspect. Export original files where possible and retain unedited copies.
- Report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and your local FBI field office. File promptly rather than waiting for a perfect explanation. Include every transaction identifier, even if you are unsure which transfer is relevant.
- Notify the exchange or payment service involved. Use only the official website or app, not a telephone number or link sent by a caller, social-media account or “recovery agent.” Ask for the fraud or legal-response team and provide the transaction package.
- Make other appropriate reports. The Federal Trade Commission accepts fraud reports; commodity or securities issues may also belong with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission or Securities and Exchange Commission.
- Get jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A licensed lawyer who handles cryptocurrency fraud can assess civil claims, injunctions, seizure, forfeiture and remission in the places where the exchange, issuer, defendant or assets are located.
How blockchain tracing works
Most cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on a public blockchain ledger. The Federal Trade Commission describes that ledger as a public list showing transactions on both the payment and receipt sides. Anyone can generally inspect the movement of tokens between addresses using the network’s block explorer.
Build the transaction trail
Start with the confirmed transfer from your wallet or exchange. Follow the receiving address, then each subsequent transfer, recording the hash, timestamp, amount and destination at every step. Note when assets are swapped, split across addresses, bridged to another network or sent to a service that may identify customers.

Tracing can show where funds moved; it does not automatically reveal who controls an address. Investigators usually combine the on-chain path with exchange records, account-registration data, subpoenas, warrants, device evidence and communications. A blockchain address is therefore a lead and an evidentiary link, not proof of a person’s identity by itself.
What makes a trace useful
- A complete hash and the correct network, such as Ethereum or another chain.
- The exact asset and amount, including whether a token is a stablecoin.
- Sending and receiving addresses copied directly from the wallet or exchange.
- Coordinated timestamps, account records and messages that connect the transfer to the fraud.
- A clear chronology showing the original theft and later movements without altering screenshots or files.
Why tracing may stop
Movement through mixers, bridges, peer-to-peer services or cash-out channels can make attribution and recovery harder. Funds may also move to an overseas service, be converted into another asset or be dispersed among many addresses. Even when investigators can follow every transaction, a custodian may require a formal request before disclosing account information or freezing funds.
Can an exchange freeze the scammer’s wallet?
An exchange may be able to freeze an account when its internal compliance process identifies suspicious funds, or when it receives valid legal process. It cannot freeze an arbitrary self-custody address merely because a victim reports it, and a private investigator cannot issue a seizure order.

How to contact an exchange effectively
- Open a case through the exchange’s official support or law-enforcement channel.
- Provide the transaction hash, blockchain network, asset, amount, sending and receiving addresses, and precise timestamps.
- Identify the account you used and attach proof that you own it, such as account records or deposit history.
- Explain the fraud in a short chronology and state whether an IC3, police or court report has been filed.
- Ask the exchange to preserve relevant records and flag or hold funds if its policies and applicable law permit.
An exchange may decline to disclose information directly to you, may need a subpoena or warrant, or may find that the assets have already left its platform. Stablecoin issuers can have separate controls over their tokens, but any action remains subject to the issuer’s procedures and legal authority.

The right remedy depends on the country, state or province, the location of the custodian and the stage of any criminal case. A lawyer can determine which route is realistic.

A lawyer may also coordinate with prosecutors, exchanges, stablecoin issuers and investigators in different countries. Legal fees and outcomes vary; a consultation is not a promise that litigation will be economical or successful.

What a documented recovery case shows
A U.S. Department of Justice report published in 2025 describes a fraud case in which investigators traced $105,615 of the victim’s loss to an Ethereum address. Tether froze 947,883 USDT, approximately $947,883, in records covering 2023–2024. A federal seizure warrant transferred the tokens to a law-enforcement wallet. The court returned the traceable $105,615, and the victim later received remission for the remaining $319,385. The report says the victim ultimately achieved full recovery of $425,000.
The same report notes that the FBI initially could not trace the victim’s remaining loss to the seized address. The case demonstrates that recovery can combine blockchain analysis, an issuer freeze, a warrant and remission, while also showing why a stolen amount may be only partly traceable.

Choosing between reporting, a tracing specialist and a lawyer
These roles are different. A self-report starts the official record; a tracing specialist may organize on-chain evidence; a lawyer can pursue legal process and court remedies. Assess any provider against the following criteria:

How recovery scams target victims
People who have already lost cryptocurrency are targeted again because they are actively looking for help. The FBI warns about businesses that demand an upfront deposit, deliver an incomplete or inaccurate tracing report, and then request additional fees. In a February 2024 public-service announcement covering February 2023 through February 2024, the FBI said victims reported more than $9.9 million in losses to fictitious law firms and related recovery schemes.
- Reject guaranteed-recovery or guaranteed-freeze claims.
- Do not pay an unsolicited agent, “lawyer,” investigator or government impersonator.
- Never provide a seed phrase, private key, exchange password or remote access to a device.
- Verify a lawyer independently with the relevant bar or regulator, using contact details you find yourself.
- Remember that law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate a crime.
For context, the FBI recorded more than $2.5 billion in reported cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. That figure is a reported-loss total, not a measure of the amount that can be recovered.
Questions to ask before signing with anyone
- What exact transaction hashes and addresses will you analyze?
- What action can you legally take, and what action requires IC3, police, a prosecutor or a court?
- Which jurisdiction governs the exchange or issuer involved?
- What happens if the funds moved through a mixer, bridge, peer-to-peer service or foreign platform?
- What are the total fees, refund terms and stopping conditions?
- How will my identity documents and evidence be secured?
Bottom line
Stolen cryptocurrency can sometimes be recovered, particularly when you report quickly, preserve complete transaction evidence and the funds reach an exchange or issuer that can lawfully freeze them. Blockchain tracing creates the trail; it does not identify a thief or reverse a confirmed transfer on its own. File with IC3 and local authorities, notify the relevant exchange through official channels, and obtain advice from a licensed lawyer about the available civil, seizure, forfeiture and remission options. Treat any demand for upfront money or secret wallet access as a likely second scam.
