Can Steam Wallet funds expire? Steam’s published terms reviewed on October 13, 2026, do not state a routine expiration date for Wallet funds. That is more precise than promising that a balance can never be affected: the agreement includes an unclaimed-property clause, account-specific issues can arise, and local law may apply.
A balance that does not routinely expire still is not cash. Steam describes Wallet funds as a prepaid balance for purchases through Steam. They have no cash value outside Steam and are non-transferable, so you generally cannot withdraw them, send them to another account, or exchange them for money.
What Steam’s current terms actually say
The current Steam Subscriber Agreement does not provide a normal “use it by” date for Wallet funds. In practical terms, Steam’s published terms do not state a routine expiration period caused simply by leaving money in your Wallet or not signing in for a stated number of months.

This is a statement about the published agreement, not a universal guarantee for every country, account, or future policy version. Steam says Wallet limits and other terms can change. If an individual account displays a warning, a missing balance, or a restriction, the live agreement for that account’s region and Steam Support’s response are more relevant than a general rule.

Wallet funds are prepaid spending credit
Steam treats the Wallet as a prepaid balance used for purchases through Steam. The agreement says funds added to the Wallet are non-transferable and have no cash value outside Steam. “No routine expiration date” therefore means the credit is not given an ordinary countdown, not that it becomes a bank balance or a transferable asset.
The unclaimed-property clause is separate
The agreement states: “Steam Wallet funds that are deemed unclaimed property may be turned over to the applicable authority.” It does not set one universal inactivity deadline in the terms reviewed. Whether an unclaimed-property rule applies can depend on the relevant law and facts, so do not infer a specific number of inactive days from this clause.
Expiration is not the same as refundability, cash-out, or transfer
Several different questions are often compressed into “Will my Steam balance expire?” They have different answers.

Refundability
Steam’s Refunds policy describes a limited route for Wallet funds bought directly on Steam: you may request a refund within 14 days of purchase when none of those funds have been used. This is an eligibility window for a refund request, not an expiration date for the balance and not a promise that every request will be approved.
Transferability and cash value
Steam says Wallet funds are non-transferable, have no value outside Steam, and are not exchangeable for cash. You cannot normally move the balance to another Steam account, transfer it to a friend, or cash it out to a card or bank account.
Account closure or enforcement
Account termination, restrictions, payment reversals, fraud investigations, or other account-specific actions are different from a Wallet expiration timer. The general agreement does not turn those situations into a simple inactivity rule. If your balance changed after an account action, ask Steam Support to explain that specific transaction or restriction.

The refund policy distinguishes the purchase channel and whether the funds were used. For a direct Steam purchase, the relevant conditions are a request made within 14 days and no use of the purchased Wallet funds. Steam directs users to request this through Steam Support. Treat the policy as a route to request review, not an automatic approval.

- Identify the transaction. Open your Steam account’s purchase or account-history information and find the Wallet top-up, including its date and amount.
- Check the purchase channel. Confirm that the funds were purchased through Steam itself rather than obtained as a card or code from another seller.
- Check the timing. The published policy uses a 14-day window for this Wallet-fund refund route. The relevant date is the purchase date shown in your account records.
- Check usage. Do not spend any of the funds covered by the request. The policy condition is that none of those purchased funds have been used.
- Submit the request in Steam Support. Select the transaction and follow the refund prompts. Keep the confirmation and any explanation Steam provides.
If the purchase is older than the stated window or any of the funds were used, the published Wallet-specific eligibility described above is not met. You may still contact Support about an unusual billing problem, but do not represent that contact as a guaranteed refund right.
Direct Steam purchases and third-party cards compared
The most important practical distinction is where the funds came from. Steam’s Refunds page says Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, specifically including Steam Wallet cards bought from third parties.
| Situation | What Steam’s published policy says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet funds purchased directly on Steam | A refund request may be eligible within 14 days if none of those funds have been used. | Submit the request through Steam Support and provide the transaction details. |
| Steam Wallet card or code bought from a third party | Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party Wallet cards. | Contact the retailer or seller that took payment; keep the receipt and code information. |
| Code redeemed but balance appears wrong | The general refund wording does not decide an account-specific redemption or balance error. | Gather the receipt, redemption date, region, and error message before contacting Support. |
| Used Wallet funds | The 14-day unused-funds condition is no longer satisfied for the amount used. | Ask Support only if there is a separate billing or technical problem; do not assume ordinary refund eligibility. |
Can inactivity make a balance disappear?
The agreement reviewed does not state a general inactivity timer that automatically expires Wallet funds. It also does not promise that every balance is insulated from every legal process. The unclaimed-property language allows funds deemed unclaimed property to be turned over to the applicable authority, but the published terms reviewed do not provide a single inactivity threshold.

That distinction matters when interpreting stories about old accounts. A person who has not logged in for years has not necessarily reached a Steam-defined expiration date; the outcome could instead involve account access, a payment adjustment, regional law, or an unclaimed-property determination. Do not substitute an internet claim such as “balances expire after one year” for a rule Steam has actually published.

What happens if you close or lose access to an account?
Closing an account is not a method for converting Wallet credit into money. Because the funds have no cash value outside Steam and are non-transferable, an account closure request does not create a normal cash-out right.
If you cannot sign in, first recover the account rather than creating a second account and expecting the balance to move. Use Steam’s account-recovery and Support flows, provide the original account identifiers and proof of ownership requested, and explain whether the problem is a lost login, a security lock, a payment dispute, or a missing Wallet transaction. Support can address the account-specific facts; the general expiration statement cannot.
How to check a balance or investigate a discrepancy
- Sign in to the original Steam account. Verify the account name and region before investigating a code or top-up.
- Review the Wallet display and account history. Compare the current balance with top-ups, gifts, purchases, refunds, and payment reversals.
- Separate a purchase from a refund. A rejected or reversed payment can change an available balance without being an expiration event.
- Record the evidence. Save the transaction date, amount, payment channel, card or code retailer, receipt, and any on-screen error.
- Read the live agreement and refund policy. Steam identifies the current terms that apply to the account and may update them.
- Contact Steam Support for an account-specific answer. Ask a focused question: identify the transaction or balance change and request the reason, rather than asking only whether Steam Wallet funds expire.
Buying or receiving a Wallet card: practical checks
A prepaid card is one of the funding methods recognized in Steam’s agreement, but buying a card does not make the resulting balance expire more slowly. Before paying a third-party seller, confirm the card’s region, denomination, redemption compatibility, and retailer return policy. Keep the receipt until the code is redeemed and the expected balance appears.

The purchase channel also determines whom to contact if something goes wrong. Steam’s policy excludes third-party purchases from its refund service, so a retailer dispute, an invalid code, or a card sold for the wrong region normally has to be handled with the seller. Do not send a code or receipt to an unverified person claiming to be Support.

Examples of how the rules work
| Example | Likely interpretation under the published terms |
|---|---|
| You added money on Steam yesterday and have not spent it. | The direct-purchase policy describes a possible refund request within 14 days when none of the funds were used. The balance itself has no stated routine expiration date. |
| You added money six months ago and left it untouched. | The reviewed agreement does not state that ordinary inactivity automatically expires it. Check the current account status and terms if the balance is missing. |
| You bought a Wallet card from a shop and changed your mind. | Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. Ask the shop about its return policy. |
| You spent part of a direct top-up and want all of it refunded. | The stated Wallet-funds route requires that none of the purchased funds have been used, so the published condition is not met for that request. |
| Your account is subject to an unclaimed-property process. | The agreement allows funds deemed unclaimed property to be turned over to the applicable authority; the terms reviewed do not give a universal deadline. |
Questions the published terms do not answer universally
Steam’s general agreement does not establish one worldwide inactivity period, one recovery outcome for every closed account, or a universal legal treatment for every jurisdiction. Consumer-protection and unclaimed-property laws can differ by location. A local law may provide rights or procedures that are not summarized in the general Steam wording.
For that reason, use the current agreement and Steam Support for an individual case. State your country or region, the funding method, purchase date, whether any funds were spent, and the exact balance or account message. Those details determine which policy branch is relevant.
Bottom line
Steam’s published terms do not state a routine expiration date for Wallet funds. They do state that Wallet credit is prepaid, non-transferable, and without cash value outside Steam; a narrow refund request may be available for unused funds purchased directly on Steam within 14 days; and third-party Wallet-card purchases are not refundable by Steam. The agreement also says funds deemed unclaimed property may be turned over to the applicable authority. If your account does not match these general rules, use the live terms for your region and contact Steam Support with the transaction evidence.
