Yes. Sonos speakers can connect directly to your home Wi-Fi, and Sonos recommends wireless setup for most homes and small businesses when the signal reaches the rooms where you use them. Ethernet is an optional alternative for supported products and network setups—not a requirement for every Sonos system.

How Sonos works over Wi-Fi

In a wireless setup, Sonos products join your home Wi-Fi network. The phone or tablet running the Sonos app must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and the app and speakers need to be on the same subnet. A guest network or network configuration that isolates devices can prevent the app from finding the speakers. Sonos system requirements and Sonos network guidance explain the network conditions.

Sonos identifies a baseline that all its products can use: a 2.4 GHz network supporting 802.11b/g and WPA/WPA2 Personal security, or no security. Many products on current software support additional Wi-Fi modes and standards, while S1 systems have narrower support. Check the requirements for your specific speaker and app generation before changing router settings. The requirements vary by product and software.

Choose the setup that fits your home

Setup When it fits What to check
Wireless over home Wi-Fi Your Wi-Fi reliably reaches the rooms where you use Sonos. Sonos recommends this for most homes. The app and speakers must share the same network and subnet. Avoid unsupported network arrangements.
Wired with Ethernet Wi-Fi is unreliable or does not reach some rooms, or the home has more challenging coverage or interference conditions. You need a supported Sonos product with Ethernet and a compatible network topology. Some products cannot use the dedicated Sonos wireless network.
Improve Wi-Fi coverage Your existing Wi-Fi does not reach the rooms where you want wireless Sonos. Sonos suggests mesh Wi-Fi as a coverage approach; it is not necessary if your current Wi-Fi works adequately.

Set up Sonos on home Wi-Fi

  1. Connect your phone or tablet to the home Wi-Fi network you want the Sonos system to use. Do not use a guest network.

For 5 GHz and 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E), its guidance recommends Auto or All.

  4. Test the rooms where you plan to listen. If Wi-Fi is weak or slow there for other devices, Sonos products are likely to have similar problems.

Does Sonos need Ethernet?

No. Ethernet is an option for supported products and suitable networks. In a wired Sonos setup, at least one supported product remains connected to the router by Ethernet. Compatible products can then use SonosNet, a separate wireless network for Sonos products. This may help where home Wi-Fi coverage is unreliable, but it is not available to every model.

Check the wired setup requirements

Sonos support pages identify Arc Ultra, Era 100 models, Era 300, Move models, Roam models, Sonos Play, and Sub 4 as products that must use home Wi-Fi or Ethernet rather than SonosNet. Product lists may vary across support pages and change over time, so confirm the current guidance for your exact model at Sonos’s wired and wireless setup guide.

Why can’t my Sonos connect to Wi-Fi?

Start with the network and the rooms where the system is used rather than assuming you need new hardware.

  1. Confirm the app’s connection. Make sure the phone or tablet running the Sonos app is on the same home Wi-Fi network as the speakers, not a guest network.

    • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.

    • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.
  2. Check coverage in the problem room. If Wi-Fi is weak there for other devices, Sonos may also struggle. Sonos suggests mesh Wi-Fi to extend coverage when wireless setup is desired.

  3. Review security and network type. Check for a captive portal, enterprise security, a hotspot, or an extender—arrangements Sonos lists as unsupported.

  4. Verify compatibility for your product. Wi-Fi support differs by model and software, particularly for S1 systems. Consult the model requirements.

  5. Consider Ethernet only if the model and network support it. A wired setup can suit weak coverage or more complex environments, but it has topology requirements and does not work with every Sonos product.

After changing your router, Wi-Fi name, or password

Use the Sonos app’s network-update flow to provide the saved network details. Sonos says the app guides you through updating supported products; instructions differ for S1 Controller and for systems that were already wired. Follow the relevant steps in Sonos’s guide to connecting to a new router or Wi-Fi network.
