Yes, but only in specific circumstances. Someone can see your current or recent device location through Google Maps when you have shared it with that person or created a location-sharing link that they can use. Google says a recipient may see your recent location even when Google apps are not open, along with your name, profile photo and device battery status.
Google’s documented controls require location sharing to be selected through a Google account or service. Its current help documentation does not establish that ordinary Maps sharing can be secretly enabled without the account holder’s participation or access. If you see an unfamiliar share, stop it immediately and then check every Google account and device you use.
What “tracking through Google Maps” can mean
The word tracking covers two different Google features that are often confused:
- Location Sharing: selected people, or anyone with an active sharing link, can view your current or recent device location.
- Timeline: your Google account stores a history of visits and routes for you to review later.
These controls are independent. Google states that “Location Sharing works even when Timeline is turned off.” Turning off Timeline therefore does not end a live share, and finding no Timeline history does not prove that nobody can currently see your location.

Location Sharing is also separate from other Google features that may expose location information. Google’s account documentation names Maps, Messages, Find Hub, Family Link and Personal Safety as services with location-sharing controls. A complete check must cover the account and device where each service is active.
What a Google Maps location recipient can see
When you share your real-time location, Google says the recipient may see your device’s recent location even while you are not using a Google app. Depending on the sharing arrangement, the person may also see:
- your Google account name;
- your profile photograph or account image; and
- your device’s battery status.
This is not the same as giving someone access to your entire Google account. It is visibility granted through a particular location share. The people listed in Maps, or anyone who can use an active link-based share, are the audience you need to identify and remove.

Can sharing be enabled secretly?
Google’s published controls describe sharing as a user-selected setting. The official documentation reviewed does not say that a stranger can turn on ordinary Google Maps Location Sharing invisibly from outside the account. In normal use, a person must select a recipient or make a sharing link available through a Google service.
That qualification matters: the documentation cannot determine whether a particular phone has been accessed, whether another person can use one of your signed-in devices, whether an account is managed by someone else, or whether coercion is involved. An unfamiliar share is a reason to investigate the relevant account and device, not proof that Google Maps has a hidden universal tracking mode. The settings check below tells you which shares are active; it cannot certify that a phone or account has never been compromised.

Location Sharing versus Timeline

The practical implication is simple: check the live-sharing list first when your concern is another person watching your location. Check Timeline separately when your concern is stored travel history.
How to check and stop Google Maps Location Sharing
Use the Google Maps app on every relevant device. Google says the setting is device- and account-specific, so checking one phone or one signed-in account may not reveal every active share.
- Open your Maps account menu. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Location sharing. The page lists people who can currently see your location and any link-based sharing that is active.
- Inspect each entry. Check the recipient’s identity and the account or device currently in use. Do not assume that a share you remember creating is the only one.
- End an individual share. Select the person, then choose Stop. Repeat for every recipient you no longer want to have access.
- Review active links. If a location-sharing link is still available, disable or end it using the control shown in Maps. A link can extend visibility beyond the named people in your list.
- Repeat for other accounts and devices. Sign in to each Google account you use and inspect Maps on each phone or other device where that account is active.
Google also documents account and device controls for stopping a share or pausing Location Sharing on Android. The exact options can depend on the account and device, so use the controls displayed for the affected account rather than assuming that changing one phone changes every device.
Check Google services beyond Maps
Google’s account help identifies several services that can have location-sharing controls. After checking Maps, review the corresponding settings for:
- Messages, where a location can be shared in a conversation;
- Find Hub, which can expose a device or location through its own sharing controls;
- Family Link, where family-management settings can include location visibility; and
- Personal Safety, which has location-related features separate from Maps.
The important question is not only “Is Maps Timeline on?” but also “Which Google service is currently sharing this device’s location, under which account, and with whom?” Google’s documentation treats these as separate controls.

Arrival and departure notifications are a separate setting
A person you already share your location with can add notifications for when you arrive at or leave a specified place. These alerts are different from the underlying Location Sharing permission.
Google says the person who shares the location receives an email when such a notification is added, plus a push notification if Maps notifications are enabled. The person who set the notification can turn those alerts off while leaving the location share active. Therefore:
- an arrival or departure alert does not create a new, independent live-location share;
- turning off the alert does not necessarily end Location Sharing; and
- ending Location Sharing is the control that removes the recipient’s ability to view the shared location.
If you are auditing privacy, look for both the recipient list and any notification settings associated with people who already have access.
How to review Timeline without confusing it with live sharing
Timeline is Google’s saved record of visits and routes. Google says it is off by default for a Google Account and can only be turned on when the account holder opts in. If you enabled it, review the Timeline controls to see what history is stored, whether automatic deletion is configured, and whether you want to turn the feature off or delete existing data.
Do this as a separate task from ending Location Sharing. A Timeline deletion can remove saved history while leaving a current share untouched. Conversely, stopping a recipient does not automatically erase the travel history already stored in Timeline.

Google also warns that turning off or deleting Timeline does not necessarily stop location data from being saved through other Google sites, apps and services. That warning is why a clean Timeline screen is not a complete location-privacy audit.
What to do if you find a share you do not recognize
- Stop the share. In Maps, select the unfamiliar person and tap Stop. End any unrecognized link-based share as well.
- Record what you found. Note the Google account, device and recipient shown in the settings before making further changes. This can help you distinguish an old share from one created on another device.
- Check every signed-in account and device. Google states that Location Sharing is device- and account-specific. Repeat the review on other phones and accounts you legitimately use.
- Inspect the other named Google services. Review Messages, Find Hub, Family Link and Personal Safety for location sharing that is separate from Maps.
- Review account and device access. If someone else may have used an unlocked phone or had access to your Google account, investigate that access. The Maps settings identify active shares but cannot tell you how a particular share was created.
- Handle stored history separately. If your concern includes past journeys, inspect Timeline and its deletion or auto-delete controls after stopping live shares.
If you fear coercion, stalking or physical danger, changing a setting may not be enough. Consider whether the other person can still access a signed-in device or account, and seek help from a trusted person or appropriate local support service. Google’s help pages explain the controls but do not diagnose a compromised phone or account.

Checking Timeline and stopping there
Timeline is not live Location Sharing. It can be off while a recipient continues to see recent device location.
Checking only one account
The setting is specific to both the account and device. A second signed-in account or another phone may have its own sharing state.

Assuming closing Maps ends the share
Google says a recipient may see recent location even when Google apps are not being used. Closing the app is not the documented way to revoke access; use Location Sharing and select Stop.

Turning off notifications instead of sharing
Arrival and departure alerts can be disabled while the underlying share remains. Remove the recipient’s Location Sharing permission when you want location visibility to end.
Assuming Timeline deletion removes every location record
Google says other sites, apps and services may save location data even after Timeline is turned off or deleted. Review those services separately.
What Google’s documentation does—and does not—establish
Google’s current help material establishes that Location Sharing is a controlled feature, that recipients can see recent location and related account details, and that the feature is independent of Timeline. It also documents how to stop a share and identifies other Google services with location controls.
