Not through a documented Apple feature that silently starts monitoring an iPhone from afar. The options people often mean—finding a lost phone, family location sharing, or workplace device management—only work when their required settings or management are already in place. Stalkerware is a separate safety concern, but its existence does not establish a legitimate way to remotely monitor any current iPhone without access.
What can work, and under what conditions?

Finding a lost iPhone is not the same as monitoring one
Find My is a recovery feature, not a tool for turning on surveillance after a phone goes missing. Apple says that if Find My was not enabled before the loss, the iPhone will not appear in Find My or at iCloud Find Devices, and you cannot use that feature to mark it lost or erase it remotely. Even when Find My was enabled, location availability depends on the phone’s state and configuration. A displayed location is not a promise of continuous, real-time tracking.

Family Sharing can support location sharing and help family members locate a missing family device, but the service must already be configured. Members can choose whether to share their location. Being related to someone, knowing their phone number, or having access to a family group does not by itself switch on location sharing.

Apple describes these options in its Family Sharing guide. They are not a covert workaround for monitoring a person who has not agreed to share.
Workplace tracking has a visible, limited condition
An organization can locate an eligible supervised Apple device only by putting it into Managed Lost Mode. That action locks the device and displays a notification. Apple states: “Your organization can’t track the location of the device without locking it and showing a notification.” The administrator’s location access is therefore tied to a visible lost-device action, not silent background tracking. This applies to managed, supervised devices—not every iPhone that happens to be used for work or connected to a work account.
What stalkerware claims do—and do not—prove
Stalkerware can be used to invade someone’s privacy. The FTC warns that this software may be installed on a person’s phone and can be difficult to detect; its guidance discusses physical access and signs associated with a jailbroken phone. That is a serious risk, but it is not evidence that an ordinary person can silently install a working monitoring tool remotely on any current iPhone without device or account access.

Be skeptical of services promising to bypass Apple’s setup and security requirements. Apple’s documented features do not endorse such a capability, and FTC enforcement involving stalkerware services illustrates the privacy and security harms these products can cause. The evidence does not establish that every advertised product works on current iOS.

Put personal safety first
If the person may react to losing access, do not rush to change settings on a device they might monitor. The FTC warns that researching options or making changes could alert an abuser. Use a trusted, separate device to contact a domestic-violence advocate or law enforcement, and consider whether preserving evidence matters before resetting the phone. See the FTC’s safety guidance.

Review sharing and access carefully
When it is safe to do so, Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide recommends reviewing Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access. This can help you examine sharing and access settings. Guidance is available in Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide.

Apple says a factory restore removes apps and resets sharing settings when a device may have been physically accessed and tampered with. A full restore erases the device and requires its passcode and Apple Account credentials. If trying to remove malicious software, Apple cautions against restoring from a backup because that could reinstall it. Make a safety and data-preservation plan first; a reset may destroy evidence or alert someone who expects continued access. See Apple’s safety guidance.

Protect your Apple Account and device credentials
- Do not guess passwords, attempt to bypass account security, install hidden monitoring profiles, or buy spyware.
- Do not share your device passcode, Apple Account password, verification codes, or account information with someone who asks for them. Apple covers lost-device and account-safety steps in its lost iPhone guidance.
- If you need help and suspect your phone is monitored, use a separate trusted device to seek it.
