Yes, copper is a credible research-stage route to reduce silver in solar-cell metallization, but it is not yet a proven, industry-wide replacement. The clearest documented work targets printed or ink-based copper contacts, including a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project for perovskite tandem cells. That project is intended to determine whether the approach could be scaled; its announcement does not show that commercial scale-up has succeeded.

“Displacing precious metals” usually means using less silver in the electrical contacts that collect current from photovoltaic cells. It does not mean every precious metal has already disappeared from every solar technology. Conventional silicon cells and emerging perovskite cells use different device stacks, so a contact that works in one architecture may damage efficiency, manufacturing yield or operating life in another.

What “displacing precious metals” means in a solar cell

In the photovoltaic context, the most clearly documented precious-metal problem is silver. Silver is used in conductive contact patterns and other module metallization because it combines high electrical conductivity with manufacturing characteristics that have made it dependable at scale. Those contacts must carry current out of very thin semiconductor layers while adding as little shading and resistance as possible.

DOE’s 2022 Photovoltaics Research and Development Funding Opportunity Announcement says the photovoltaic industry consumed between 8.8% and 9.9% of global silver supply every year from 2016 onward. The same document reports that manufacturers had reduced silver use to 80–90 milligrams per standard passivated-emitter rear-contact (PERC) cell in the M6 format, 166 mm by 166 mm, by the time of publication. That is a source-era figure for that cell format, not a current universal benchmark for every factory or cell design.

Reducing silver can therefore address several linked goals:

  • Lower exposure to a constrained commodity supply chain.
  • Reduce the material cost embedded in each cell and module.
  • Design contacts that are easier to separate or recover when a module reaches end of life.
  • Enable manufacturing processes that use less material or operate at lower temperatures.

A lower-cost metal is not automatically a drop-in substitute. The contact must meet electrical, chemical, mechanical and lifetime requirements simultaneously.

Where silver is used today

Conventional silicon cells

In conventional crystalline-silicon designs, silver is associated with the cell’s current-collecting metallization. Fine printed contact lines collect carriers from the silicon surface and connect to larger conductors that move current through the module. A successful alternative has to preserve low contact resistance and a high fill factor while avoiding excessive optical shading, adhesion loss or damage to the silicon and passivation layers.

Because the contact pattern is repeated across millions of cells, even a small change in paste composition, printing speed, firing conditions or yield can affect the economics of an entire production line. The relevant comparison is therefore not simply the price of silver versus copper per kilogram. It includes paste or ink consumption, equipment changes, process energy, scrap, throughput and the value of the electricity the finished module produces.

Emerging perovskite cells

Perovskite cells use a different set of absorber, transport and electrode layers. Some designs are single-junction perovskite devices; others place a perovskite subcell on a silicon bottom cell to form a tandem. In these structures, electrode choice is tightly coupled to interfaces and encapsulation. A metal that appears electrically suitable can still react with adjacent layers, migrate through the stack or accelerate degradation under heat, light, moisture or electrical bias.

That distinction matters when reading announcements about “silver-free” photovoltaics. A result for a silicon contact paste does not automatically transfer to a perovskite tandem, and replacing a perovskite electrode does not prove that all silver in a complete module has been eliminated.

Why copper is the leading alternative in the documented work

Copper is attractive because it is far more abundant than silver and has high electrical conductivity. DOE’s broader photovoltaic program describes copper-based inks as a possible approach across silicon, cadmium telluride and perovskite technologies. The program treats this as a development direction rather than a completed commercial transition.

A DOE notice dated February 29, 2024, describes a proposed Colorado School of Mines project titled “Low temperature printing for Next Generation Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Little to No Silver Content.” The notice says the project will develop and demonstrate a perovskite-cell metallization strategy that includes replacing silver with copper and determining whether the copper metallization is suitable for potential scale-up. The wording is important: it establishes a planned demonstration and scale-up assessment, not a successful industry deployment.

Low-temperature printing is especially relevant for perovskite tandems because the layers above a silicon bottom cell can be sensitive to heat and solvents. A copper ink or printed pattern must make a reliable electrical connection without dissolving, roughening or chemically altering the layers beneath it. The same process must be repeatable over a large area at production speed.

How to judge a silver-reduction or copper-substitution proposal

Manufacturers and technology buyers should score a contact concept across the following dimensions rather than rely on a single efficiency number.

Decision area Questions that must be answered
Electrical performance What contact resistance, fill factor and conversion-efficiency impact result after the contact is integrated into a finished cell?
Manufacturing Can the ink, paste, plating or printing step run at the required temperature, throughput and alignment tolerance on the target cell architecture?
Material compatibility Does the metal or its binder react with semiconductor, transport, passivation, encapsulation or solder layers?
Reliability Does the contact retain adhesion and conductivity through heat, humidity, thermal cycling, illumination and electrical-bias tests?
Economics and supply What are the metal, precursor, equipment, energy, labor, yield and rework costs, and how exposed are they to supply disruption?
Circularity Can the module be separated so contact materials are practically recoverable at end of life?

DOE’s funding documents explicitly call for alternatives to be assessed against performance, durability and cost. They also identify compatibility and scale-up as central questions. No directly comparable commercial statistic establishing a copper-versus-silver winner for efficiency, lifetime or total cost is provided in those documents.

Why copper is not a simple swap

Electrical losses can erase the material saving

A contact with higher resistance lowers the current that can be extracted from a cell and can reduce fill factor. A design may also need wider or more numerous lines to carry the same current, increasing optical shading or material consumption. The only meaningful result is the performance of the complete cell after printing, curing, firing or plating—not the conductivity of a metal coupon.

Process temperature and chemistry constrain the choice

Silicon production lines commonly include high-temperature steps, while many perovskite stacks require gentler processing. A copper formulation must be compatible with the substrate, transport layers and encapsulation scheme. Solvents, binders and curing products can be as important as the copper itself. A process that works on a bare test surface may fail when exposed to the full multilayer device.

Yield and throughput determine factory value

Contact lines are printed or formed over thousands of cells per hour. Small variations in viscosity, nozzle condition, screen alignment, drying or curing can create open circuits and shunts. A lower raw-material price does not help if defect rates rise or if a factory must add slow inspection and rework steps.

Durability is the hardest issue for perovskite contacts

A March 9, 2026, Nature Energy review describes perovskite-module lifetime as a materials-, device- and module-level problem. It highlights ion migration, interfacial breakdown, encapsulation failure, realistic durability testing and the need for durable materials. Those failure modes make electrode substitution inseparable from the rest of the device stack.

For a copper contact, qualification should therefore examine whether copper, copper ions, reaction products or the ink binder move into neighboring layers during operation. It should also test whether the contact remains adhered when the module expands and contracts, whether moisture or oxygen reaches the interface, and whether electrical bias accelerates chemical changes. These are engineering questions to measure, not assumptions that can be settled by copper’s bulk conductivity.

Perovskite results also need realistic test conditions. A short laboratory demonstration can establish that a contact prints and produces initial power. It cannot by itself establish the service life of a sealed module exposed to years of temperature swings, light and humidity. The 2026 review’s emphasis on module-level testing is a reminder to demand evidence from complete, encapsulated devices.

Silicon and perovskite replacement goals are different

Aspect Conventional silicon photovoltaic cells Emerging perovskite photovoltaic cells
Silver issue Silver is used in current-collecting contact metallization; DOE links its use to supply-chain exposure. Silver may be present in electrodes or other metallization, but the electrode must be evaluated as part of a more chemically sensitive multilayer stack.
Candidate approach documented by DOE Copper-based inks are identified as an approach that may apply to silicon. A proposed Colorado School of Mines project targets low-temperature printed copper metallization for perovskite tandem cells.
Main integration challenge Maintain low resistance, low shading, adhesion, firing compatibility and production yield. Maintain those electrical and manufacturing properties while controlling interface reactions, ion migration and encapsulation-related degradation.
What the evidence establishes Silver reduction and alternative contacts are active program goals. Copper replacement and potential scale-up suitability are explicit project objectives, not proof of completed scale-up.

Recycling changes the design question

DOE’s 2022 solicitation notes that silver is embedded in module composites and difficult to recover. That means contact architecture affects more than the bill of materials. A metallization scheme that uses less silver but bonds it irreversibly to glass, encapsulant and semiconductor materials may still present a difficult recycling problem.

Designers should ask how the contact can be separated at the end of service, what concentration of metal can realistically be recovered, and whether the recovery process requires hazardous chemicals, high heat or extensive shredding. These questions should be answered alongside performance and reliability testing, because a contact that cannot survive module assembly is not a practical circularity improvement.

What a credible copper demonstration should report

A useful technical report would identify the cell architecture, metal loading, line geometry, printing or plating method, curing conditions and the number of cells tested. It would report contact resistance, fill factor, efficiency, shunt behavior and yield before and after module assembly. For perovskites, it should also identify the transport layers, electrode stack and encapsulation materials so compatibility can be assessed.

Durability evidence should include complete modules, not only isolated cells, with the stress conditions and test duration clearly stated. Useful results would show how much performance remains after thermal cycling, damp heat, illumination and electrical-bias exposure, and would investigate failure locations. A scale-up claim should include area, line speed, process repeatability and defect statistics rather than a single champion device.

What is established—and what remains open

  • Silver use in photovoltaics is large enough to be a supply-chain planning issue: DOE cites annual PV consumption of 8.8%–9.9% of global silver supply from 2016 onward.
  • DOE recorded 80–90 mg of silver per M6 PERC cell as a reduced, source-era figure in its 2022 solicitation.
  • Copper-based inks and printed metallization are credible development paths for reducing silver.
  • A DOE perovskite project explicitly combines copper replacement with an assessment of potential scale-up.
  • The available documents do not establish a universal commercial copper-versus-silver efficiency, durability or cost advantage.
  • Perovskite electrode choices must be assessed with ion migration, interfaces, encapsulation and realistic module testing in view.

For readers deciding whether “silver-free solar” is already a market fact, the practical answer is no. Copper is a serious candidate under active development, while commercial readiness depends on proving the complete package: electrical output, manufacturability, long-term reliability, cost and recoverability.
